This is a gem! Dave in all his glorious drive, speech creativeness and brilliant irreverence, right before the launching of VH I. Delightful!
This could very well be one of if not the very first printed DLR interview. Love seeing old VH stuff like this.
Notice his answer when asked about how he felt about the other bands they played with. Almost sounds like he really didnt like any of them.
Wow, that was outstanding and a legend was born....
EPIC
Wonder what the reporter's reaction was.
What are your major influences? My cock and Schlitz Malt Liquor. Priceless! This is the Dave I miss!
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!
Good ole Dave......
Great find and thanx for posting
This is awesome stuff! Roth at his high velocity best......I just love this . Thanks for posting

How prophetic... Ted Templeman "producer of the first two Montrose albums" would pave the way for the meteoric rise of the Mighty Van Halen™.
So the seeds of evil and rancid cheese were planted even before our hero's saga had even begun.
My band, Crosstown Traffic opened for the Edgar Winter Group in 78 at the Santa Cruz, Ca Spring Festival to a crowd of about 39,000... while sitting back stage Edgar was raising a fit about Ronnie Montrose who he'd run into the day before and kept referring to Montrose's singer as the biggest cunt he'd ever met. I thought is was typical band bullshit... but it stuck with me since it was the biggest gig we'd ever done.
Little did I know the history that would follow involving Van Halen and later Hagar... I know from playing the club scene in the Bay Area during that time Hagar was not exactly respected among the working musicians in the industry. Go figure...
"If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”
Crosstown Traffic. You must have been a Hendrix fan.
I won't deny that Hagar is a cunt, but he left Montrose in 1974, so he would not have been the cunt that Edgar Winter was talking about in 1978.

This interview is indeed killer and so fun to read when you know what happens next.. I can't imagine the fire that must have been club-era VH... holy shit!
Classic. I'm going to think 20% slower this weekend since I read this.
Well VH broke onto the scene when I was going through puberty. All I wanted was a piece of pussy, a Schlitz, and something that would smoke the tires (even though I didn't have a driver's license yet). Oh and a key to the Playboy Club. I was under illusion there was actually something interesting in there. I had managed to read enough Penthouse forums I figured I knew how the world worked.
I love where he says that the album would be called Van Halen so we can be comfortable with our new leaders .... lol
I'm not conceited. Conceit is a fault, and I have no faults - DLR
