Tennant Calls Conservative Group's Voter Registration Mailing "Misleading"

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP, Heath Harrison) -- The West Virginia secretary of state is calling an Americans for Prosperity mailing about voter registration "misleading" and "confusing."
The mailer says the recipient only has a few days to register to vote at his or her current address. It includes a voter registration card and prepaid envelope.
Democratic Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said people have to update their registration only if they move, change their name, or want to switch political parties. Tennant said legitimate contact will only come from county election clerks, not third-party groups.
“If you have not moved, changed your name, or switched political parties, then you should throw this mailer into the trash because your voter registration is still valid,” Tennant said in a news release. “We were made aware of this situation because there was a large number of confused citizens calling our office and the offices of county clerks asking questions about why they had to update their voter registration information. The secretary of state’s office did not send this mailer, and it did not come from county clerks. We don’t know what the purpose of the mailer is but we do know that it is confusing citizens.”
Americans for Prosperity state director Wendy McCuskey said the mailer was sent to people who aren't registered, based on public record. She said it was legal and nonpartisan.
The small-government Americans for Prosperity opened a West Virginia chapter in January. The national organization was founded by billionaire conservative activists Charles and David Koch, who are well-known for the political spending and campaign contributions for conservative and Republican causes.

The KKKoch Brothers do not fund anything remotely "left".
They did fund the "Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) who were neither Democrats, nor leaders, and were not remotely "left". The DLC supposedly no longer exists, but in reality they rebranded themselves under the name "Third Way" and the KKKochs rebranded their funding of it as "The Georgia Pacific Foundation". But there's still nothing remotely "left" about it.
As for George Soros, he's probably to the left of the KKKochs (99% of humanity is) but his alleged funding of anything remotely "liberal" has been greatly exaggerated. Air America, for example, is something he never had any involvement with whatsoever. Let's face it, if his money had been on board, they probably would still be in business. As far as I know, he's given some money to Media Matters and to the ACLU, both of which obviously existed long before he was around. So to say he "controls" them would be a huge exaggeration.

British Columbians for Prosperity admits to polling about resource development and how people will vote federally. The society said it is funded by corporations, but won't disclose which ones.

A pro-oil and resource-development group called “British Columbians for Prosperity” (BC4P) did an about-face Tuesday, after it was asked to respond to claims that it was polling Vancouver residents about federal voting intentions, and the Northern Gateway pipeline.
After some probing, the group revealed it is now polling more than 1,000 residents, province-wide with robocalls.
But that was not the story to begin with.
The self-described “citizens group” -- which says it is “not a political organization” -- originally told the Vancouver Observer it was not asking residents about their political party affiliations. However, several residents reported otherwise.
“If an election were held today, who would you vote for?” Vancouver resident Neal Jennings recalled being asked by a computerized telephone voice on Monday.
“Then… they explicitly said the leader of the parties – it was Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau, Elizabeth May, and Thomas Mulcair,” he said.
The group’s executive director – retired oil executive Bruce Lounds – vehemently denied the voter polling when asked about it early Tuesday morning.
“That’s absolutely not true. I can tell you that flat out,” said Lounds. “We’re polling about Northern Gateway and general resource development. It’s for our own internal use, to develop campaigns, or to provide information to people.”
But by Tuesday afternoon, when asked to explain the difference in stories, the group’s communications representative – Alise Mills – sent an e-mail stating:
“We also asked about people’s voting intention – if an election were held today which party they would vote for.”
“We think there is a myth that development is a left-wing versus right-wing issue – and we wanted to dig into this,” wrote Mills.
“Canadians and British Columbians like natural resource development. They just are not 100 per cent [supportive] on Northern Gateway."
Ironically, Public Relations juggernaut Jim Hoggan received one of the robo-calls.
“Yeah – one of those things came up on my cell phone,” laughed Hoggan.

The Vancouver-based author wrote a well-known book on PR tactics employed by big oil companies to deny climate change. He said British Columbians for Prosperity appears to be an industry front group.
“If you don’t think it’s a front group for industry, then you’re not paying much attention,” he said.
Hoggan added he was surprised that such a group would poll about voting intentions.
“This is the kind of stuff we wrote about in Climate Cover Up that has been fine tuned by right-wing American think tanks.”
“Just as you can pollute the natural environment – you can pollute public conversations. It undermines public trust in public discourse. It’s just polarizing for the sake of partisanship."
The registered society – originally named British Columbians for International Prosperity – positions itself as an "independent group of concerned citizens" advocating for resource development to improve the standard of living.

Its main “Follow the Money Trail” message on its websites is that environmental groups cannot be trusted on resource polices (on such topics as pipelines and tankers) because such organizations are funded by “rich American foundations.”
The argument goes, environmentalists are inadvertently drumming up opposition to Canada’s oil sands to protect U.S. economic interests.
It's a similar position taken by pro-oil group Ethical Oil and federal Conservative cabinet ministers, such as Joe Oliver. Ethical Oil was founded by Alykhan Velshi, a former staffer for cabinet minister Jason Kenney. The organization came under scrutiny recently for having numerous spokespeople with ties to the Conservative Party of Canada.
In the case of British Columbians for Prosperity, Mills said she has never worked for the Conservative Party. However, the society has some Tory links. Its communications manager, Brittany Allison, formerly worked in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office as a policy researcher.
“We’re not a political organization, but probably if you looked through our membership, most of the people would not be NDP members," said Lounds.
“Part of the reason I got involved in this is myself and other friends in the community – we’ve got young adult children, and a lot of them are struggling, trying to find jobs. You just need prosperity, you need development,” he added.
Secret corporate funding
But British Columbians for Prosperity is not just a group of citizens. It is funded by undisclosed corporations.
“It’s [funded by] a combination of private citizens and corporate donations. All the donors request anonymity,” Lounds told the Vancouver Observer.
Lounds, who formerly worked for British Petroleum (BP) and Houston-based ConocoPhillips, would not disclose any of its confidential corporate backers or whether they were Canadian, foreign, or if Enbridge was one of them.
But Mills later downplayed the executive director's statements regarding funding, saying he is no longer one of the key decision makers in the group. She added, that she is, along with a Board of Directors. She said she would eventually disclose the board's names and full budget.
While the group has been criticized in national media as a front for “big-money oil companies”, Mills asserts the organization is remarkably low-funded, with only two staff.
British Columbia is gaining strategic importance for getting oil sands bitumen out of Alberta. The Obama White House recently delayed "indefinitely" its approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. Analysts say this will only increase pressure for Canada to build pipelines to the coastlines.
British Columbians for Prosperity's YouTube videos feature actors and well-shot scenes about energy conversations. One especially well-viewed video depicts an "environmentalist" coming to the realization that he depends on oil too, in order to maintain his standard of living.
