    Starter guitar feedback

Jay and I have been talking about this for a while. I'm considering getting my son a starter guitar for a good job this semester in college, and this is what Jay recommended:

Squier Vintage Modified Stratocaster HSS Electric Guitar

    Features
    Bolt on construction
    Basswood body
25.5" Scale maple neck, 9.5" radius, rosewood fretboard, 21 frets
Duncan Designed SC-102 Stack middle and neck pickups
Duncan Designed HB-112 Humbucker in the bridge

    Whatcha think? Comments?

I'd be thrilled to get that as a first guitar. Go for it.

    Good price.

My friend bought his kid a Squier off Ebay. Brought it over and asked what I thought, and while I am nowhere as far into it as Jay is, I thought it was a decent purchase. His kid likes it and that's what matters, I guess.

    It's worth that...

Agile from Rondo Music is a good guitar in that price range as well...

If the kid wants a strat type guitar then I would say it's a good choice. The electronics on the Squires seem to be better than what's on Epiphones meaning the switches, jacks, and pots seem to hold up better. With the humbucker it would be a pretty versatile guitar. You can play lots of styles of music on it.

Don't overlook the Sterling By MusicMan line. Lots of choices.

    http://www.sterlingbymusicman.com/

I have 2; The SUB AX3 (249.00 ish) and AX30D (Dimarzio Pups, higher price point in the $600 range). Both are HH, vintage style trem, 5 way switch.

IIRC the entry level SUB Silo3 can be had for about $199.00. HSS, 5 way, vintage trem.

    http://www.sterlingbymusicman.com/sub-guitars

I think they offer great value. Guitar Center should have one in stock to check out too...

I tried one of the Sterling "Axis" types and found the fret ends weren't as finished as I'd like. Other than that it played and sounded pretty close to the Wolfgang Special I bought.

He doesn't really know enough about guitars to have an educated opinion about what he wants. Neither do I, while you mention it.

Which is why I go to you guys.....

It seems like the humbucker along with the two singles on the Squier is a good feature for a starter guitar, though....

LOL.... If he likes the starter well enough after a few years, he'll be graduated from college with a job and he can buy the damn thing himself....

That was my experience with the AX30D. The tech I use took care of it for basically nothing when he did the set up. My AX3 was used and the previous owner had fixed them already.

The only way to know is to pick one up. Being a noob player, the styling and price was what attracted me. I knew I did good when the tech starting saying good things, especially regarding the price.

I thought the idea was to buy the kid something that would be easy to pick up on, not something with fret burrs and crap that going to make it not fun to play...? Or something you need to do work on before you give it to the kid... One of my girlfriends recently bought her son a Mexi Strat, paid about $350 for it. I changed the pickguard and hardware for him because he wanted black on black and it wasn't available, but I wouldn't have had to do dick to set it up for him. Played decently out of the box.

For a beginning guitar I would recommend something with a fixed bridge and not a whammy bar. Keeping a Strat in tune can be a bit tricky and really, a beginner should have a guitar that's easy to tune and stay in tune.

You might look into getting a Telecaster instead. The Les Paul knockoffs Elvis suggested would be good too. My first real guitar was a Mephis Les Paul copy. It was a solid guitar and I played it for several years through a Fender Champ amp.

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guita...lectric-guitar

I would get him this Telecaster with hum buckers. I used to have a 1970's era Fender just like it. It was a badass great playing guitar. I wish I still had it.

Agreed that it won't stay in tune, but he can simply just not use the bar. I think a Tele is a great guitar, I love mine, but I also feel he'd be better served on a normal scale guitar to learn on.

I have six Agiles out of about 20 total guitars...

Bought one new and the rest dirt cheap on ebay...

Not a bad one in the bunch...

IMO, they're the best there is for the money...

They make an Epiphone look very cheap in a side by side comparison...
