    That's silly...

Chord progression and melody are the keys to songs, not chords themselves...

You can also point out that there are only seven notes in the major scale that nearly all popular music is based around...

The magic is in what an inspired songwriter can do with only four chords...

Well, as I pointed out on the board where this originated from, these 4 particular chords were most likely first used by a guy named JS Bach. And no, I don't mean the asshole from Skid Row.....

It astounds me. Stuff like "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (best song ever in my not so humble opinion) are based upon an axis of four chords. Forget the notion as being "silly." The cold hard fact is this quadrant has been used, re-used and introduced again time over time in pop tunes.

And what is bad about it? Not much. Each generation get's their own version of the edifice. Yeah, older folks can bitch about it being used before, but ultimately, who cares? My parents hated my Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper (Oh fucking Jesus tap dancing Christ on a cracker, I could write a volume about the Billion Dollar Babies sleeve and it's accoutrements and the angst it caused) and Boston albums, yet felt Elton John was semi-acceptable.

True story: My dad and his brother got loaded and put on my Good-Bye Yellow Brick Road album, and after hearing the opening track ("Funeral For A Friend") and little else, chucked it off the stereo. Next day, my father (ahem) took me to the Lauderhill Mall to purchase a Fats Domino album.

And now, at my startling old age, I get it.

The young chicks you look longingly at are going to be creeped out that you are in your mid-50s, regardless of the fact that you are 137 pounds soaking wet. You might have long hair, yet you look at those dye-job commercials with concern.

        Uhhmm...them little blue pills?

Look...live yer music. YOU own it, and nobody can take it from you.

And that's about it. Man, I could go for some waffles, egg, sausage, grits and syrup about now. Along with a Pat Travers live bootleg, followed by some vodka and Elton (check out the Russian Bullet Bootleg at You Tube. The man himself, only supported by percussionist Ray Cooper. A must, trust me on this).

Aw shit...a day off. Now I have to go fold the clothes and towels...

        Roth On, friends and neighbors.
