Constant TV talent shows are killing live music, music as an original art form, bars and pub culture and those things are very close to my heart.
It's sad to see those people so desperate to "make it" with little or no talent...

I have heard him, seen him on Idol. He did a very good I would say perfect voice impression or mimic of another rock song/singer when I saw him. But you can tell he really has the pipes to do his own stuff any way he wants. Let's hope he wins then by your recommendation alone and makes a killer first album of him and his band and his style out of this. Would always like to hear new good rock......and Tenacious D will now have their own category with two entries. Tenacious D rocks.
I cannot vote though in such a process by principle.

I think what Sesh might be referring to are things not what we would consider rock and roll like....on the embed above, go to 1:30 to 1:35. You can see where the lead guitarist totally missed his guitar/syncing showing you that the band is being staged even though Caleb (if that is indeed his real name) may be singing live....very not like real rock. Could have a replay spliced in and such but too much control.
So Idol sucks in that way....but yes again....I think when he screams "Fuck you I used you all! Now I get to make a fuckin record and screw it to you all! Right in front of your naked steaming Eyes." when he wins Live..... Then he will be hip!

This is all a world of fake. These people don't create music they try to mimic it. If you mimic Mozart that's fine because it's an impersonal medium where the composer writes the music and other people perform. On the other hand rock should be the opposite of that. It's the direct expression of the artist, it should be visceral it is the close cousin of punk.

I'm sure I could have expressed myself better there but I got back from seeing 5 bands play live in a bar in the city an hour ago.
One or two of them had never played live before, the first was a boy girl couple who did lovely acoustic songs about flowers and shit. Later my pals band who are doom metal played.
Both acts were rock and roll because they were people expressing themselves through art.
I warned you I may sound like a dick but it's true, fuck the talent shows they can only ever deliver the mediocre.
It's not rock 'n' roll. It's the musical equivalent of paint by numbers.

Sesh doesn't realize this kid (I've only watched the video linked) didn't just wake up one day and decide to go on Idol to "make it". To go play "karaoke" on national tv on a whim. I would bet money the kid has his own band. I'd bet money the kid is writing his own songs. He is using Idol as a vehicle to promote himself. Nothing wrong with that. It's not his fault there isn't a show that caters to rock bands playing original music. Didn't somebody try that, and nobody watched? If he wins, and it affords him the chance to make even ONE album with even somewhat of a record company behind him, then he is further ahead than he would be toiling around going from bar to bar in this fucked up age of music, and the business.
NO, I don't like Idol or this kind of stuff any more than you guys do. But you can't possibly want this guy to fail more than those other fucks up there doing karaoke.

A win for rock and roll? I don't follow. Rock and roll has won in my life since I can remember. Why would I care what the rest of the world likes?
I personally have no problem with this kid, in fact, a friend of mine from back in the day just so happens to be his bass player back at their home state of NC. I just can't stand the vehicle that is a singing contest. If winning a karaoke contest on TV gets this kid some sort of push, then good for him, but it truly is a shame that this is what it's come down to. To make it in music, you either have to win one of these stupid contests or have a bazillion hits on you tube of you doing your thing for 2:47 or so. It's just absurd.
One more thing on "rock and roll". It started out as anti-establishment. A form of rebellion from conformity. Now, horseshit shows like this make it a joke in my eyes. I mean, look at that ass next to Caleb doing all of that self serving guitar wankery that doesn't even lend to the kids performance. Is that rock and roll? Fuck no. And how about those shots of J Lo shaking her tits and all of the judges sipping from Coca Cola cups. Is that rock and roll? Fuhuhuhuck no!! So fuck that whole show and it's prepackaged, false conceived notion of what rock and roll is. They don't get it and they never will. This show completely misrepresents the genre I grew up loving, so it is essential that I avert my eyes and ears in order to save it for me.

I think it sucks a guy from a band feels the need to resort to this crap, in order to even get considered to "make it".
I also think it sucks that he's not up there with HIS band, instead of the fucking Idol backing band. Maybe he is a typical lead singer with "LSD"!
Unfortunately, we are in a day and age where instant gratification rules. This guy can get instant gratification, instead of working his way through the bars, and years of struggling to make it. At least, that's the premise of these shows. I don't blame him for taking the short cut, but I'd prefer he do it the way Sesh has been doing it for the last 30 years. (Kinda like Angel and her going to University!) Not to mention, if he does win, will his head blow up and he'll think it's all about him, and forget the rest of his band back home?
I'm riding the fence on this subject. It just sucks the rock business is the way it is today. Ray told me if a band sells 500,000 copies today, it's like selling millions years ago. But these country fucks, and even the rappers seem to be selling millions of albums.

Seriously, I shouldn't be surprised about this happening in this day and age, but in a modern day society where arena rock is on it's last legs and rap has taken it's place, we should be fucking HAPPY that someone out there has the BALLS to go on national television and say "FUCK YOU!" to rap and pop music and sing a kickass rendition of Still of the Night. But NO, we have to fucking go and say that this kid is not rock and roll, that he sucks because he was on American idol, listen to your fucking selves! Right now, with this whole attitude of "preserving the old ways of playing in clubs" and saying that Caleb isn't doing a good thing, you're no better than the fucking haters of rock music.
