He didn't fight the war to free anybody. Wasn't it you that posted he would have forgotten all about trying to abolish slavery to reunite the states? If it wasn't I'm sure you saw it. He might not have liked it but undividing the country was more important to him than abolishing slavery.

Nobody thought the war between the states would last over a month. Lincoln figured if he got serious and leaned on the southern states they would buckle. The more Lincoln pushed the bigger the resolve of the southern states to resist became. If anyone knew the carnage and death of the result they would have negotiated a resolve but human beings are stupid and we still suffer from the same stupidity.

Southerners resented being told what to do by the yankees up north whether they agreed or disagreed with abolishing slavery. If you go to school in the south they teach you it also had to do with the states rights to govern themselves. They don't teach you that north of the Mason Dixon line. They just say it was about slavery period.
