He always seemed to be touring near where I was, but I never saw him. I remember him being popular in high school, especially at parties. A few guys were obsessed with the guy. Great guitarist. I never quite got into his songs, though. I saw Edgar Winter live once. Good show.

Johnny Winter was a mediocre musician at best. A lot of his playing was sloppy, derivative and unintelligible. If Winter is to be recognized for anything it was he single-handled kept "Texas Blues" alive after the death of his original counterparts Lightin' Hopkins and the great Freddie King. He was known to be a tremendous influence one of the most derivative blues players Stevie Ray Vaughan but stayed away from Stevie believing he was a "sell out" of the blues which he was. That is one accolade that can never be taken away from Winter - that he never did sell out or became a traveling blues side show circus act like Robert Cray and Jonny Lang.

But his playing was sloppy and most of it was due to his heavy heroin use and chronic alcoholism. He did have a lot of punch and sway in his notes but they seemed to lack any character which made Johnny a inner circle musician among his colleagues. The dude is no Katy Perry. That's for sure.

Johnny Winter gave among the most exciting rock & blues music ever. Especially with And. "And Live" is surely one of the best remedies for asthenia, along with the Stones' "Brussels Affair" and AC/DC's "If you want blood you got it".
"Meantown Blues" is just fantastic. His guitar playing was terrific, let's not underrate his raucous voice that was as much his signature.
