Maybe it is contractual in the sense that because Dave and John are on different labels they would have to figure out what label they would release it under. I hope Dave didn't have to sign some kind of no compete type of contract in order to get back with VH. If that were the case it would make the brothers look silly.

They probably justify that by the fact that Joe was an established solo artist (as well as known for his work in the James Gang) before he joined the Eagles.

But then, the Eagles never really looked at solo projects as a threat to the band anyway. They were playing Joe's "solo" songs like "Life's Been Good" and "All Night Long" on Eagles tours in the 70s, and now they play Henley & Frey's solo material in their sets.

On the other hand, I don't ever see Keith Richards playing any of his "Xpensive Winos" material on a Stones tour, and he damn sure isn't interested in backing up Mick while he sings something from "Primitive Cool". The biggest irony of all is that they let Billy Preston (not even an official band member) sing a couple of his hits on the 1975/76 tour....



Eddie let Hagar sing some of his crap songs on the Van Hagar tours, but would he let Dave sing "Yankee Rose", "Going Crazy" or "Slam Dunk" (just went with the three most obvious songs there, because they sound like Van Halen songs). I imagine the tradeoff there would be Dave would have to sing a couple Van Hagar songs to "balance it out" and that's never going to happen. Not that Ed seems to have too much interest in that cheddar drenched material anyway. Arguably he wasn't interested in it in 2004 either, which is why he was in such a regrettable state of mind on that tour.

Dave releasing a solo project has no impact on VH's live shows. The whole thing is retarded. If John 5 says it's due to "contractual issues" with Dave/VH then I'm inclined to believe it. Again, it all comes down to ED wanting to be in control. I wonder just how many years he spent, drunk out of his mind, staggering around his back yard having arguments with Imaginary Dave. I should have said "silly again" but i kind of thought since they had gotten back to together with Dave, done 2 tours and 1 record, and gotten older/wiser that they would be more secure with themselves at this point in their life versus 1996. That was almost twenty damn years ago. At what point will they put the petty stuff aside and get on with life? It gives me the feeling that while Dave is in Japan still loving life, Ed is hiding up on howdy doody mountain peeping out the blinds like a crackhead waiting for the police to show up.

Ted Templeman said the dynamic in Van Halen changed as soon as Ed built his studio. He said when you are renting studio time you have to get on with it. When you own the studio you can take your time and play with the mixes too much. He didn't say it but you could tell he was saying 5150 ruined Van Halen. That band died as soon as 5150 came into the picture. 5150 is police code for the criminally insane. Well it's fitting because as soon as we heard about 5150 Sammy Hagar showed up.

AAAAAND...if you think about it, Dave has always been the creative one. Ed was 'just' a virtuoso. He could have easily been one of the many who had 'moderate' careers but he ended up in the right vehicle with 'Van'.

AAAAAND...if you think about it, Dave has always been the creative one. Ed was 'just' a virtuoso. He could have easily been one of the many who had 'moderate' careers but he ended up in the right vehicle with 'Van'.

The Van Halens can't do shit without a lead singer who has some creative input. The Van Halens are specialists but they are lousy producers. Van Halen 3 is what you will get from Alex or Eddie with a puppet singer. Classic Van Halen was Dave and Ted Templeman at the helm with Eddie, Alex, and Mike in the engine room. Ed hated Ted and Dave having all the say but hey kid, now we know why they did. Ed and Al never would have gotten out of Pasadena if it weren't for Dave and his father supporting them. I don't think the Roth's ever got a thank you.

The Van Halens are stuck on themselves. They are an important part granted but not the whole part and they still want to be everything.
