I've always been a bit conflicted with the whole SETI thing anyway. Making contact with a more advanced civilization never worked out well for anyone on Earth like the Native Americans, Aztecs, Aborigines etc...

I'm not even sure SETI is a good idea if aliens actually exist.

Who's to say they would be kind and gentle? Aliens wouldn't be flying around in the backwoods of the Milky Way Galaxy (which is where we are) for a joyride. Most likely they would kill or enslave all of us, use our planet for its natural resources, and then move on to their next victims. I'm sure that would drive the treehuggers crazy just before they are disintegrated by the aliens.

My gut feeling is that there's probably very little advanced life in the universe, 99.999999999999% of it is probably of the amoeba level. We may very well be the pinnacle of evolution, for better or worse. If a civilization in our galaxy had a billion year head start on us, we would have probably been visited by now.
