Giraffe Dies After Hitting Its Head on Low Highway Bridge

A giraffe being driven down a highway in South Africa died on Thursday after its head collided with a low bridge. Witnesses described the horrific scene and posted pictures of the giraffe taken just before the accident to Twitter.



One witness, Pabi Moloi, told Mashable about the scene leading up to the accident:

"My cousin and I were driving in Pretoria on a busy highway when I spotted a pair of giraffes in the back of a truck.

I whipped out my phone to take pictures of this, since it isn't a very common thing to see in the city. As I was getting shots the truck went under a bridge and suddenly one of the giraffes hit its head HARD on the concrete.

The sound was so loud that my cousin, who was driving, asked me if there was someone shooting because she thought she'd heard a gunshot!"

That sound of a skull being hit and the force with which it threw the giraffes head forward is something I won't easily forget."

A local SPCA spokesman confirmed to News 24 that the incident was under investigation. "The SABS has published a code for wildlife transport, and it would appear that the open transport with the giraffes' head sticking out is not acceptable," Rick Allen of the Tshwana SPCA said.

"Their heads were above the vehicle which meant that one of them cracked their head one the bridge," he added to NBC News. "That's something we are very concerned about and we will be looking at a prosecution under animal cruelty legislation."

The camel might have cleared that bridge, but not by much. It's hard to be completely accurate in estimating how low the bridge is from that photo, but it looks to me like the trucks themselves just barely made it.

Camels are kinda tall, but I don't think they are taller than that truck.

My question is how did the other giraffe NOT get hit? Did he manage to turn around in time to look, say "OH SHIT!!!" and duck really fast?

What good would a top have done? It would have smashed up on the bridge and probably killed the giraffe anyways. He should have avoided the freeway and took the back roads with no bridges overhead.

I remember when he got the camel. I walked down there to see if he was serious and sure enough there's a fucking one hump Osama Been Ridin' camel. So I says "Glenn, why on earth did you buy a camel??" And Glenn says "Because the elephant was too much!" No joke. I'll have to go down there and take a pic of it. You guys should see this guy - he'll get drunk and get on his golf cart and put the camel on a rope and walk it right up the back of my yard. Funniest damn thing you ever seen.

No joke. My brother worked in Saudi for 7 years, and this is a souvenir from that hell-hole. They're beautiful hand-crafted pieces of furniture. I should take a close-up of the etchings on the wood. Gorgeous.

He brought a few pieces of furniture back with him too. Amazing craftsmen. Unfortunately, that 7 years probably cost him his life...he was exposed to a lot of radiation and chemicals in his job there, which probably caused his cancer.

That's what I always heard too. But Noah, that's the camel's name, he's friendly as can be. We go down there and take apples and crackers and bread and he'll just really gently use those big old camel lips of his to take it out of your hand and eat it then he'll nudge you with his big old camel head for some more. And he must be pretty happy with his home cause he could step right over that fence if he wanted to.
