Rush to Celebrate 40th Anniversary With Massive 'R40' Live Box Set

Are you watching how it's done Van Halen?

Rush to Celebrate 40th Anniversary With Massive 'R40' Live Box Set

10-DVD set includes bonus disc containing full 1974 set including three never-before-released songs

Four decades after Rush put out their self-titled debut, the trio is celebrating its legacy with a box set that collects concert films from their entire career. The 10-DVD or six-Blu-ray set R40, set for release on November 11th, compiles the previously released concert videos Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), Snakes & Arrows Live (2008), Time Machine 2011: Time in Cleveland (2011) and Clockwork Angels Tour (2013), as well as a bonus disc with previously unreleased live performances. The box set also contains a 52-page hardback book, including photos of memorabilia and from concerts throughout their career.

Most interesting to Rush fans will be the bonus disc, which contains two hours of material dating back to the group's formative years. The centerpiece is the full, eight-song set from 1974 at Ontario's Laura Secord Secondary School that was featured in Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. John Rutsey was still the group's drummer at the time, and the trio played three never-before-released songs – the Rush originals "I've Been Runnin'" and "The Loser," as well as a cover of Larry Williams' "Bad Boy," which the Beatles used to play – along with eventual hits like "Best I Can" and "Working Man."

It also includes five songs from a 1976 concert at Passaic, New Jersey's Capitol Theatre, a single performance of "Lock and Key" from the group's 1988 Hold Your Fire tour and eight tunes from Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre (including a rarely performed run-through of all seven parts of their 1976 suite "2112"). To cap things off, it ends with footage from the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where they performed "2112" with producer Nick Raskulinecz and Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.

Both the Blu-ray and the DVD box sets contain the same content, though the DVD set has more discs due to time restrictions. The track lists for the concert films are the same as their original releases.

Earlier this year, the group reissued its self-titled debut as a lavish vinyl edition. The group's label remastered the record at Abbey Road and packaged it in a custom box with a lift-off top. Meanwhile, the group is gearing up for a 41st Anniversary tour to kick off next year.

"The three of us just had a meeting," guitarist Alex Lifeson told Rolling Stone in March. "We said, 'Let's not talk about anything band-wise for the next year. Let's separate ourselves and come back rejuvenated.' Unfortunately, the other people at that meeting didn't hear what we were talking about, so there are already plans being made for spring of 2015. It's going to be a 41st anniversary tour, or whatever they're going to call it."

Van halen could never do that , I recently watched bits and pieces of rush on YouTube and van halen don't possess the understanding of what a fan is, more importantly they don't have rush's sense of humour .

It's not their fault if you already have everything they got.

I'm more worried about how short a time it feels since R30...

At least they are giving their fans the choice of whether they want to get fleeced, or not.

Rush isn't forcing anyone to buy this stuff. But thank goodness they are giving them the opportunity. To give their fans this choice, is showing appreciation.

As a Van Halen fan, I'd love to have the choice to buy this kind of stuff from VH.

Good for you, Von. Buy into the shameless cult of mediocrity. Rush really hasn't worked on any new material since what, 199-something. This is fan fleecing in terms that all you're getting -for some outrageous price - is a turd of a DVD. Enjoy.

I prefer the stuff Rush have released since 2000 more than anything they did in the 90s.

Their last live show made Van Halen's look like a bar band.

Yea I liked the last 4 albums myself. They got away from the keyboard shit on Counterparts and have stayed that way. I won't buy this. Makes no sense too put out 1 new dvd with the 70's stuff on it out with shit every Rush fan already probably has. Rush still is great live but Gettys voice is shot. So too me Dave didn't sound much worse in 2012.

I disagree. Roth was just UNBEARABLE on the 2012 tour, vocally. Listen to the Oshkosh concert.
Geddy can't sing as high as he used to, but at least he sings. He doesn't scream or bark the lyrics like Roth has been doing for quite a number of years now... Okay, Roth has never been a great singer but still..
Besides, comparing Rush to VH is quite null and void. Rush was never a "party" band, and VH was never a "smart" band. I love both bands, don't get me wrong, but it's like comparing KI$$ to, say, Marillion (Hogarth era)...

Geddy maintained his voice better than Dave and is more consistent. I actually like Dave's voice in 2013 but overall you never know which Dave vocally will show. Geddy is not great vocally but he was not great 30 years ago either, he is about what he should be.

That's kind of my point though, how did we end up with more showmanship at the Rush gig?

The last tour(s) are a bit like finding out the new Iron Man movie cost $200 million to make and you go along and it's just set in a warehouse.

You get home and look into it and find out that they paid Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow $95 million each to be in it and the directors son is playing the villain.

I don't think the Van Halen big screen with some sheep herding video and some confetti competes well with this but the tickets weren't any cheaper...

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson Auction Rush Memorabilia for Charity

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have dipped into their personal collections in order to give Rush fans a chance to own pieces of the band’s history while supporting a great cause.

It’s all part of their Grapes Under Pressure 3 charity auction, which started Oct. 3, runs through Oct. 13 and supports Grapes for Humanity Canada, a charity that seeks “to provide a better quality of life for victims and survivors of disasters” by raising funds “through various international wine events, wine auctions, corporate and private home wine tastings.” To that end, Lee and Lifeson have donated an array of Rush-related items that includes:

A Geddy Lee Fender Jazz bass AND a rare Garrison G-50E Custom Acoustic guitar used by Alex on the Snakes & Arrows tour. They have both been signed by Geddy and Alex as well as by members of Depeche Mode, TOOL, the Fray, Pearl Jam, Judas Priest and many more in Support of Grapes for Humanity.
A Gibson Les Paul Axcess “Custom Shop” guitar which was used by Alex Lifeson in a recent secret session. The guitar will be autographed and will be accompanied by a signed photo of Alex with the Guitar.
A Sabian Paragon Diamondback Chinese 20″ Cymbal, from Neil Peart’s personal kit, with Neil’s signature.

The auction, which you can watch or bid on here, comes just a few weeks after the third annual ‘Geddy & Alex’s Excellent Harvest Adventure,’ during which the duo boarded a train with a lucky group of fans (each of whom paid $1,250 a ticket for the privilege) for a day of wine country fun. With days to go before Grapes Under Pressure 3 comes to a close, the memorabilia on offer — which really includes quite a bit of cool stuff, with the above items representing only a fraction of what’s for sale — has already racked up thousands of dollars’ worth of bids. All proceeds have been pledged to rebuild health care facilities in the Philippines damaged by the Haiyan Typhoon.
