Do you believe this story about Eddie Van Halen?

I was reading this story from what should be a credible source but I thought hmmm....

Anyhoo instead of making an editorial decision one way or the other why not ask our readership who are more knowledgeable than me and definitely more sober... DO YOU SMELL SHIT?

Eddie Van Halen Has Superhuman Ears
by Jeff Giles December 5, 2014 10:55 AM

We all know Eddie Van Halen is good with his hands — and if a story making the rounds about the Van Halen guitarist is accurate, he’s been blessed with some pretty sharp ears, too.

The Van Halen News Desk points us to a tale recounting one chapter in Eddie’s occasionally somewhat adversarial relationship with Hartley Peavey, founder and CEO of the gear company that bears his name. The two were working together on the company’s Van Halen-endorsed 5150 guitar cabinet, and locking horns over materials; essentially, Eddie wanted Peavey to use Baltic birch, and wasn’t willing to settle for less — to the point that he disassembled a prototype on delivery to verify it was absolutely up to snuff:

So he takes the test cabinet apart and says, “Hartley, I thought we agreed this cab was going to be made of Baltic birch? What’s with these little blocks of plywood down here?” Now, he’s talking about some block inside the joints of the sides that was just there to give more space to join them or glue them or whatever. Hartley says, “Well, we decided that would raise the price by [X] dollars and it wasn’t worth it because those little pieces aren’t going to change the tone at all.”

To settle the argument, Peavey said he’d line up 16 cabinets, one of which was built with all Baltic birch, and if Eddie could tell the difference, he’d cave in to his demands. You know what happened next, right?
“Eddie comes back down to the factory, plugs in and lets just one blistering high sustain note rip and vibrate everything until it dies out. Then he unplugs and goes to the next one, all down the line like that until he gets to one and lets the note rip. ‘That one,” concluded the poster of the tale. “Of course he’s right, or there wouldn’t be a story.”

It's possible. Some humans are more sensitive than others.

Ed has been playing seriously through many cabinets for over 40 years now. Their IS a resonance factor with different types of wood.

But then, the article mentions that it is some small glue blocks that were not made of Baltic Birch. Not like the baffle or sides, top or back. So you would think the difference would be negligible.

And seriously....with Hartley Peavy's ultra-modern manufacturing facility, and the discount he gets for bulk wood purchases, making those fucking blocks out of Baltic Birch would not add more than a few dollars to the price at most.

I call bullshit on it. No damn way he can hear the difference after all the years of playing onstage with unprotected ears. But then again...this is Ed. Maybe it's like people who go blind and have super hearing. He lost his soul so maybe he does have super hearing to compensate for it.

Mm yeah, no. Us sciency types would require a bit more evidence than one bloke with a 1/16 chance of fluking it. Like Eric Johnson supposedly being able to tell the difference between a Duracell and and an Energizer in a pedal that's going through hundreds of other 50 year old circuits/speakers. There are countless other variables that make even the simplest rig sound a bit different every day, especially in different rooms.

I think I believe this story over the reports that Eric Johnson can hear the difference in 9 volt batteries in effect pedals.

My thoughts exactly. Ed can supposedly hear the difference between blocks wood glued into an amp, but he CAN'T hear the difference between a block of gold and a block of cheese?

I believe in the possibility of a hearing so keen, it's just hard to believe that it's he who has it. His live guitar tone has been sounding the furthest thing from "brown" these past two tours and his super ears haven't picked that up.

I'm on the opposite end... Given the dynamics of battery voltage output variations under a range of loads... I can easily believe Johnson's claims far easier than this story of Ed's. There's verifiable science involved measuring voltages and signal processing variations in electronics...

In Ed's case... the joint blocks used in a 4x12 cabinet would only represent less than 2% of the wood volume overall. Then compare the wood density between the birch blocks -vs- the plywood and their ability to affect noticeable audio variations in tone... I'm not buying it.

Actually the variation in a specific sets of 4 - 12 inch speakers could account for a noticeable tone variation itself... without the cabinet wood being a factor at all. If this blind test had been performed with a single set of speakers, with no changes to the wiring and just transferred from one box to the next... then I might believe Ed could hear a difference. I suspect the results could not be reproduced consistently though...

    I call bullshit...

    So do I...

Ed was just trying to sell something besides music, as usual...

Was Ed worried about tone wood when he built the his frankenstrat ??

And if he was such a tone guru why does Van Halen sound like shit live ??

Why does ADKOT sound like shit ??

Why does Wolfie's tone sound like shit slathered with shit ??

In fact, Ed's tone has pretty much sounded like shit since he parted ways with Ted Templeman and built his own studio...

I don't buy it one bit...

I have Deluxe Vibrators coming in this week...super high powered ones that are powered by a deep cycle marine battery. They'll either get you off or shake your teeth right out of your head. And...if you order now...20% off!!

Well, when you fix up one of those Rabbits on a Marine Battery, then we'll talk. Until then, me and the H-mistress will be just fine. Despite the 20% off.

I only know of Hitachi for their hard drives.

And no, that is not an innuendo.

Yeah... the difference isn't only the brand name. They use different chemical combinations internally and each variation has a very different performance as far as the amount of amp load the battery can sustain over time and perform.

My experience with electronic cigarettes has taught me that all batteries even though they may be the same size, shape and voltage ratings... they can vary in chemical composition (ICR, IMR & Hybrids) and amperage draw... for example 18650 rechargeable Li-On's can vary from a 4 amp load max up to a 30 amp load. Important to know... if you push them beyond their operating limits... the chemicals become unstable and the damn things can explode...

Too many words and too sciencey. Battery go in item, battery work til battery die, new battery go in. Yay.

Careful with those e-cigs. Studies are showing they aren't any safer than real cigarettes and some of that shit has formaldehyde in it, not to mention you get to be the fag "smoking" an e-cig.

If you are going to mention "studies"... please take the time to go read some the legitimate, peer reviewed scientific studies that have been conducted in the last year or so.

One completed a few months ago analyzing the chemical content of e-juice vapor found formaldehyde levels 750 times less than that found in cigarette smoke. The levels detected were below the average found in ambient air samples in any city in the US. So breathing air is more hazardous than e-cigarette vapor.

If you are interested the link below contains a fairly comprehensive list of links to legitimate articles and scientific studies on the subject...
