Not even Dave can make a Steely Dan song listenable.

I liked it. It sounded horrible, yet there ya go. Probably because I can tolerate Steely Dan a great deal better than FORD.

I wish Dave was doing Van Halen then and Vegas now!

I dig these obscure little numbers....

There's not much on YouTube documenting the Vegas years...

                  It's a shame....

Steely Dan are Untouchable to me.
The only two artists I give a free pass to are Joe Jackson & Toto.
Dave? Yeah, that was good. I guess he gets a free pass too, on that one..

edit: BTW, isn't there a studio version floating around? I remember hearing it in a former Roth Show episode..

I think he picked the wrong SD song, is all. A remake of Old School can't ever stray too far from the truncated notes and horn sections without sounding absurd, so anyone who takes a shot at it is pretty much stuck doing a carbon copy with their voice on it. Josie or FM would've been better songs to do.

Tough songs, though, Josie & FM..

In what regard? Nothing too challenging, range-wise and they have a meaner attitude. Not that Dave was in his Fair Warning 'kick ass and take no prisoners' mindset during his Vegas stint.

I think you have to have a certain "groove" to sing those songs.. Fagen's not the best singer, but he's got that "thang"..
If there were SD songs that could be more appropriate for DLR, I'd pick (randomly, on the top of my head): Change Of The Guard, Rose Darling, Bad Sneakers, Haitian Divorce.. Fuck it, I'll even go and say Hey Nineteen.

Dave's version here is ok. But honestly, it's almost impossible for anyone else to do those songs. Fagen has such a unique voice and these songs have been around for nearly 40 years now so it's hard to hear anyone else sing one and it not sound...odd.

And don't pay any attention to what ford says. He'd rather listen to the Twinkle Fairies or Cock Glitter or one of those other gay bands.
