This might be sacrelige but "ATBL" has never been a song that did anything for me.
I know some people rate it highly but I don`t know why.
It`s probably my least favourite song off "Van Halen".
"Unchained" on the other hand is the shit.

Unchained is a rock classic from Van Halen with a great opening riff by Eddie which is better than ATBL!!!
Unchained by miles. Even EVH thought ATBL was a stupid song when he wrote it. The opening riff is cool, but I think it is Dave who saves that one.
I'd have to go with Unchained as well.
ATBL is my choice. I love that opening! The solo is cool, Daves voice rocks.

I would have to give the nod to UNCHAINED, but ATBL is a kick ass tune. Listen to Ed workin the flanger in the middle of ATBL when they slow the song down. Guitarist's didn't have a clue what this young guitar wizard was doing at the time. The sounds he was coming up with using stomp boxes was way ahead of it's time. To bad he is just a shell of what he once was.
Unchained has to be the definitive Van Halen riff. Powerful as hell with a very positive upbeat feel to it. But what I like about ATBL is the dynamics; the way the song goes from distorted to clear and loud to quiet. That sound too, which is actually an electric sitar! Amazing! One of my all time favourites, this song really moves me I have to say.

ATBL was the first full Van Halen song i learned. The band i use to be in even played it at skewl, such a great day that was. But im goin to have to go with Unchained. The opening riff on that song is great!! Even the verse riff, and Daves voice man!!! Both great songs, but Unchained all the way
Gotta go with Unchained...That awesome crunchy guitar riff with Eddie using that MXR Flanger....This song still stands up as a hard rock/heavy metal classic and always will!!!

I give Unchained the nod over ATBL.
Now, I realize that ATBL is an important song, but it does little for me. It's probably my least favorite on the album.

When I got my first electric guitar my mom also pre-paid for two lessons on the next two Saturdays. The first lesson he taught me how to tune and said "next week, bring in a song you'd like to learn". I knew exactly what I wanted to be able to play. The next week I sat down with the instructor in a tiny sound room lined with speakers & electronics and two small stools to sit on. We hooked up our guitars, he checked my tuning, then I handed him my cassette I had brought. 10 seconds later the opening of ATBL cranked through the system. I could see his head drop a bit thinking "shit, how am I supposed to teach the kid this?" Hey, he said any song, and this is what I wanted to play.
To his credit, he did a fine job showing me how to do it.
btw - his name was Mike, from Music, Music guitar shop in El Cajon, CA (in case he ever finds himself perusing these boards someday)

ATBL may be more the more "famous" track, but to the initiated Unchained is far superior. The syncopation during the bridge kicks ass!
