I think their set from '07-'08 could be considered a Greatest Hits line up. Not going by hit singles as much as they were the more familiar tunes. That tour and apparently this coming tour are more geared towards the casual fans and potential newbies. There seems to be a lack of confidence or a boat load of laziness or both in this band that is preventing them from attempting to make it in today's music world with new music. Unusual, but not surprising, of course. I always figured they might hit SNL some day. Kimmel is getting closer to something like that. Ellen is an peculiar choice. One things for sure. They'll be playing in front of more women at that gig than any of the arena stops on the last tour.
It is probably the biggest audience they will play for all year.

She is, without a doubt, against the Ellen appearance.... I can see her point, it's not the typical Van Halen audience target, at all....
BUT, as I told her, I know many, many women who are my age that would jump (no pun) at the chance to sit in the lawn here at the ampitheater to watch Van Halen in concert....
So, is it unusual? Um, absolutely....

I don't understand the Ellen appearance. I'm assuming her core audience is youngerish women, probably the least represented group at a VH concert these days. Well, I suppose they deserve some credit for actually promoting the album...
It just doesn't fit... currently the show is rated 18th in the afternoon time slot and their primary audience is 73% women 18-49 and women 25-54 demographics. This would have made sense back when... When It's Love was topping the charts. But today? WTF?
