THAT tour was a fucking trainwreck, and even Eddie at his worst in 2007-2008 was still playing a bit above the wretched standard to which he had sunk the last go-around with Hagar. Yeah, I suppose if I were Hagar I too would have stayed and completed the dates even after it quickly became readily apparent that Eddie wasn't in condition to play well if by bailing I personally would have been found liable for the entire cancellation and would have been sued by the promoters for lost revenue. I mean, this is all assuming what Hagar said regarding that was true, and the contract he had signed for the 2004 tour did stipulate that Hagar was required to be present for every booked gig or otherwise suffer substantial financial liabilities. Honestly, Hagar should have insisted Eddie get sober for the tour prior to the first dates being played, and apparently some kind of half-assed unsuccessful intervention was attempted in early 2004 to no avail. I do understand the financial reason Hagar didn't bail on the 2004 tour, but Hagar really should have insisted Eddie's debilitative state was addressed long before the tour was underway. Even Hagar admits that Eddie was in rough shape when the BOBW tracks were being recorded, and if Hagar's descriptions of Eddie's behavior during the BOBW recording process were true, Hagar should have realized Ed was in no condition to get through a tour.
When the 2007 tour, the tour itself was postponed by several months, so Ed could sober up. Now, if THAT was a result of Dave insisting it or was the result of promoters telling Irving Azoff that they wouldn't provide the massive guarantees the band was asking unless Ed was demonstrably sober is anybody's guess. But to be fair, Dave stuck with the tour even throughout 2008, when Ed's condition was starting to deteriorate again.
Now, it'd be easy for me to say that were I in Dave or Sammy's shoes I would have bailed on the tour, but if was actually in their shoes and was looking at severe financial liabilities if I did, in fact, bail on the tour...I'm not so sure I wouldn't have stuck around.
Sometimes a sense of moral/ethical relativism isn't as strong as the pocketbook.

[QUOTE=Nigel;1889665]See, Nigel, I get it when it comes to what Dave is doing now outside of the vocal approach.
I saw Dave live 4 times between 1999 and 2006. So I got to see the physical limitations age imposed on him over a 7 year period. With each successive tour, his splits off the drum riser were less and less effective in terms of the execution and height factors, and he wisely discontinued that move after the Sam and Dave tour. And I was fine with that. Whatever, you know?
Dave's onstage outfits and those ridiculous hair extensions reached THEIR nadir on the Sam and Dave tour. Frankly, Roth looked ridiculous onstage on that tour - any criticisms of Roth during that period in terms of Dave still trying (and failing) to look like he did in 1986 were right on point. And after that tour Dave started to adjust his appearance to something befitting of his age and hair-growth ability. And I was fine with that, also. I could give a shit if Roth cut his hair and ditched the Krusty The Klown spandex wear. Good riddance, because that look was making him look ridiculous.
Same with the Jack Daniels jackoff on some plump cougar milf in the front row routine. Or the age-old threat of how Dave was gonna "fuck my girlfriend backstage, pal!" I mean, 50 + year old Dave would be lucky if he only had to wake up less than 3x a night to take an emergency piss, much less work out the timing of his Viagra intake to coincide with the end of his set so he could get Little Elvis in a combat-ready state to even be ABLE to fuck my girlfriend...if he's even oriented that way. Hey, after 3 years of seeing him disco dance on his dancing mat and now he's taken to waving his colorful ascot around in a manner that would make Liberache blush, maybe all those OTHER age-old rumors re: Roth's orientation weren't so outlandish after all And all of that is fine by me, too.
Shit, I saw Roth at a 2006 show try to do one of his spinning roundhouses and visibly loose his footing, to the point where he didn't quite fall over but clearly lost his balance and easily could have had he not regained it as quickly as he did. So, I'm actually glad Roth isn't trying that karate stuff anymore. I don't want to see the guy take a digger onstage. I don't particularly want to see him bash himself in the face with his metal pole twirling routine, either.
I was actually concerned that Roth wasn't up to the task in 2007, but he performed fucking GREAT on that tour.
I can accept a short-haired Roth with a minimum of mobility onstage.
I just can't accept the way he's approaching the lead vocals in terms of the yelling. It just sounds bad to my ears. And he's yelling out the lyrics 50% of the time and "forgetting the fucking words, man!" again. When Dave does kick back and simply sing the words (or at least the words he can remember), the result is fine. Not as good as it was 8 years ago, but decent enough. The problem is that approach of simply singing the songs isn't a consistent one. Not nearly consistent enough for me to bother with what the band are doing now in terms of actually paying money to see them play.
You may well be right. Certainly in 2012 at the show I saw it came off like the Van Halens were locked into what they were doing and had clearly rehearsed quite a bit. Roth did kind of come across as a guest singer, or at least someone working the stage in his own zone...you could see and hear the Van Halens chugging away and playing the tunes with a fair amount of eye contact and interaction in terms of body language, and Dave seemed like...not quite the odd man out, but I got the feeling if at any given point Roth had stopped singing mid-song and walked offstage the rest of the band would have barely noticed and just kept on churning out the music. A slight disconnection between Roth and the Van Halens, to be sure.
Sorry if I'm ripping Dave a new asshole.
I just want him to shine and silence the critics...
Especially after Ed bashed him in that latest interview....
All these iconic songs he created... There wouldn't be a Van Halen without him...
I'm just frustrated... I don't care if he's 60 I just wanna see that classic swagger back...

I want that swagger back, too. I remember seeing Dave on his '99 tour and he was smirking and telling MILFs in the front row --- "Honey, you look so sweet I bet you shit sugar".
Maybe some of the younger kids at the show thought that was corny, but I laughed and felt that was the good ol' Dave that dropped so many panties from '78-'84.
I know he's 60, but is displaying Rusty herding cattle on the big screen showing any rock god swagger? Don't talk about Japanese sword-training --- show us some nice moves with a blade.
Get the swagger back --- drop the Spanish talking --- dont mention Russell the dog or tattoos --- just chug Jack and launch a spin kick once in a while --- be the old Dave we all loved.

[QUOTE=Terry;1889778]I also wonder what hell happened between 2007 and 2015 with Dave.
It's only a 7 year span, but on the '07-'08 tour he was still acting like a bonafide rock god onstage --- the Liberace jackets rubbed some people the wrong way, but the bare chest and low-register vocals were making a lot of decent-looking MILFs get dewy in the nether regions (watch some of the YouTube video for proof).
Suddenly in 2012 he's pushing the vocal cords into cat-fucking frequency, and shuffling around like a drunk NASCAR Dad at a country bar. Bragging about Rusty the Mutt and Wolf's sex life is a surefire way to clog up a MILF's vagina with cobwebs.
What happened to the pussy-smashing, cocky sum-a-bitch we grew up watching ??

I think it's pretty cool but the picture does show what a shithole the average town in the USA has become. Methinks I see a Pizza Hut building re purposed after that business failed, an O'Reilly's full of Chinese shitty imported parts, a tire dealership and a carwash. People lining the streets as if a parade is coming and those UGLY FUCKING advertising flags screaming "Hey look at me, I'm a shitty business trying to sell you Chinese cabinets". The only thing missing is a quick lube place and a WalMart!

Remember when FORD had FORD COUNTRY it was a little message board hosted by the Roth Army I believe.
I guess it would have been the ORIGINAL front line...
Not too surprisingly there seemed to be a supply and demand issue on the morbidly obese websites whereby there was a shortage of male 'feeders' for the hoards of enormous ladies so you and I were quickly hot property.
There was also the Michael Jackson board, the pagan board or tricking priests to say the word cock on the catholic message boards??
We were very childish but at least there was some genuine fun in it...

I was 21 years old then... Lol
Everyone here was around 30...
Now it's mostly a 40 something crowd... With ZahZoo being the oldest member at age 73....

I think I'm the youngest Webmaster unless you count Sarge.
The next ten years could be tough when this crowd hits the mid 50s heart attack years...

If you say that again...man, the next time I run into you, you better fuckin' be wearing a cup!!!!
Oh, shit...wait just a minute, here (heavy breathing)...I shouldn't yell so loud (tingling in chest)...I feel woozy (numbness in left arm)...just gotta get to my heart pills (clutches chest, gasping)
Dave historically starts tours weaker. The difference is when younger you can get away with it more and get in shape quicker.
I know back in the blue grass period he was rehearsing a ton. He worked a ton going into 2007. He will struggle vocally but if he rehearsed more now with the band it would help him a lot. I get managing time and blow ups of personality but older we get we physically have to work harder.

He rehearsed a lot in 2007 because he had A LOT to lose...
Now, he's taken it for granted and he doesn't give a shit anymore. As usual, Roth being Roth.
He sounded better on the Portland and Concord gigs.. Let's hope he'll stick to it. He's gay, nonetheless. But that's nothing he should be ashamed of.. Now that the Obummer administration FORCED gay marriage.. Oh, that's another thing.. I'll leave at that.
Enjoy your weekend, soccer moms.. "Might as well dump"
