This is meant to be a place for entertainment not endless negativity and bile. He was making 80 posts a day and it gets to a point where that becomes a central tenet of the conversation on here just by brute force. I stand by my original Tabula Rasa thread which I've stickied again, he was being a total dick.

Banning

This is also going to really annoy some of you but this is a clean slate. We will be unbanning genuine posters. That of course doesn’t in any way make them immune from being banned again in 20 minutes time. This is an amnesty, a time for peace and reconciliation. Before you get too annoyed at past crimes remember these were just words on a forum on the internet, nobody died. I’m sorry but this is the nature of what this site was originally about. It was and is going to be a little more ‘robust’ than many forums online – heat and kitchen. I received a life ban from my football teams Forum a few years back because I was flicking between it and here and replied to a post there as I would here…

Banning is going to be a last resort, just don’t be a total dick. We will be using temporary bans rather than permanent unless you are persistently just ruining the site. We don’t think it’s equitable to stick lifetime bans on people because they do something dumb one night rather than kicking their cat.

That said this should not be seen as a new soft limp wristed approach, just more flexible. We won’t hesitate to use cruel and unusual punishment.

No, I'm not questioning the banning - the dude was begging for it. Some people strap semtex underwear on themselves to become a martyr. Some post crazy shit all over a Roth message board. I never understood it myself. But I was just wondering how long you'd do the back and forth bullshit, knowing nothing would change.

You'll get no argument from me. I guess I just never understood the whole "free speech" thing or the idea that one can post whatever the fuck one wants to on a privately owned board. Because, in the end, you are the one responsible for the content on your board. And the UK is pretty strict as far as what can and can't be typed on a screen somewhere. The old days of going nuts online are pretty much over.

The site is still hosted in the US and in any case I think the laws seem to be about where a post was made so you don't need to worry about UK law.

This is an ongoing site thing rather than a specific post and I tried not to go there especially because it was directed at me a lot of the time.

If in a typical day you have 300 posts and 10 new threads but one person makes 80 of the posts and 8 of the threads and they are a mixture of bizarre conspiracies, religion, telling people their music is crap and just plain telling everyone else to shut up and that they are 'retarded' then banning becomes unavoidable. Otherwise all you are left with is paying for a website for ELVIS. I should have moved earlier, it's that whole Roth Army long leash thing.

There are 2 possibilities - he wanted banned or he had an insane self regard that he was bigger than the site. I think it was maybe a mixture.

Actually, the laws are pretty specific. And being in another country doesn't give a site owner blanket impunity. As the site owner, you are responsible for the content. And that's never a problem unless somebody contacts your hoster or threatens legal action.

I think everyone misses the nuances of how banning should really work in the future. First...banning should be like Gas Rationing in Cali in the 70's. If you really want to fuck with people...Ban them on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays based upon their car license plates. It takes some work Mods...but if you autobot it...allow Banns the odd days of the month....holidays....birthdays...you know....be creative in in Banning...it is not a Yin and Yang world...and there are always 3 solutions to any problem.
