Incorrect. That was the limited edition 5150 III with the modded gain stage.

It was in the Washington Times interview and pretty much everyone except iheartguitar.com missed it... EL34 based, like a Marshall, the 5150 III's power section is 6L6-based.

You wouldn't like it - it's described as "more brown" sounding.

I don't notice every nuance of ED Van Halen because I don't play any instruments..(at ease Donnie)..but have I seen that guitar before ..it looks like the Frankenstein,.... but custom cut by Fender or whoever makes it....and available to purchase...very cool.

My point is Ed doesn't seem to whip out the Frankenstein Fender,... perhaps, it is too valuable, but I would like to see Ed play this guitar live as if he was strumming away at the original one.

    any help..?

GW: Did you record any other shows or just the Tokyo show?

EVH: We have a Pro Tools rig out by the front of the house and have recorded every show since the beginning of the 2007 tour when Dave first got back in the band. But we never originally intended to put out a live record. We just recorded our shows to archive them.

We have so much material that it was too overwhelming to listen to about 150 shows and pick the best one. I didn’t even bother listening to any of the past shows
, outside of a few jams here and there. We played pretty much the same set every night, although we changed a few songs here and there. We played the classics. That’s what people want to hear.

Because the performances by Alex, Wolfgang and myself were pretty consistent from one night to the next, we decided to leave it up to Dave to pick, and he happened to pick Tokyo. Performing live is a lot harder on a singer. Wolfgang and I sing backup vocals on the choruses, so we know how much the vocals can vary from one night to the next.

When your voice is your instrument, you can be affected by a lot of different things. If you sleep with the air conditioner on or the bus ride is too long, you can wake up the next day with a fucked up voice. That’s the main reason we decided to let Dave pick.

He's certainly saying things these days that only piss me off more and more. How does he do it? Better yet, why?

Here's an idea Ed, since none of the 4 current members of the band wanted to take the time to do things right. Pay someone else to go through the shows, let them pick the best performances, and then fucking sign off on it!

I'm also a little surprised at how, apparently, Dave said to just release Tokyo and be done with it. He never struck me as lazy. Something just seems off about a band professionally recording two tours worth of shows and simply saying, eh, that one'll do.

I think the comments by Ed were positive. And yes, if Dave lives in a bubble then Tokyo gets first trot out pony...as Dave needs a producer more than anyone else in the band these days it seems (turned on it's head). So people that like "the cool Dave" get shafted while the "let Dave be Dave" crowd get "Dave". Most of the people that support Dave unconditionally (like the current members of Van Halen) support letting Dave be Dave. Ed knows him a hella of a lot better than I do...and if he trusted Dave...then at least the Band has a leader.

Not like in the days of snot faced yellow pants McAlien lover.

So oh well...this is reality. Deal with it.

Ed seems to have a thing for small head stocks, I don't agree.

Worst were those horrible Steinbergers which were fashionable for a year.

Saw one in Bill & Ted last week and it all came back to me...

Good points, Sun. I'm more put off by the broad brush stroke of hope-dashing he did in the Washington Post interview.

New record? Didn't have the time.

Club days? Didn't sound good when we tried to make it sound better. (wtf?!?!)

WB demo? Apparently, lost along with the moon landing footage.

Live classic shows? Not a mention of it.

Live of the past 2 tours? Too lazy to give you the best, so here you go. It's what Dave said was ok, so don't bitch to me about the vocals sounding like poop.

King Edward can spin it as positive as he likes, but he's not getting a hall pass from many of us for being dismissive and lazy about representing what, in reality, is the legacy of the greatest American Rock and Roll band known to exist! There's much work to be done. They've just got to do it! They need to quit the bullshit excuse making already. Properly celebrating their pasture is the key to a successful future. Oh, and some new music wouldn't hurt, either.

Definitely a dark time for Ed's sound. Was it an endorsement deal that prompted him to strap on those things?

It's not even a single unit, I believe. The frankenstripes on the picture above are a faceplate, I think.

It does make you wonder... "Didn't have time..."

The last VH appearance was July 23, 2013. There's 19 months between that and the Smithsonian appearance... over 20 months until the Kimmel appearance. So what the fuck did these guys do for around 600 days (14,400 hours) that they didn't have time to show any productive work output..?

Beat me to it, Bridge. From the Steinberger website about EVH's build...

"In the early 1980's, an incredibly gifted virtuoso guitar player fell in love with a little-known electric guitar. The player was Eddie Van Halen and the guitar was a Steinberger. One of the employees at the Steinberger factory, Jeff Babicz, was responsible for handling the artists who played these advanced technology Steinberger guitars.

Eddie requested a "special" paint job, and Jeff decided to have the faceplate painted by a talented artist named Jim O'connor.

The trick to that guitar is you can lock the bridge in different keys. Things stay in tune as you move the bridge creating more of a slide effect. Pay attention the next time you're cranking 'summer nights' in the buggy and you'll notice the key changes.
