vandy, have you heard of this guy Troy? He's from the UK and has a show here in the states on the SyFy channel. He's damned good, but I always wonder about these shows, what with the possibility of camera tricks and editing.

The worst for camera tricks and editing are Criss Angel and David Blaine.

Derren Brown used to annoy me because sometimes he would do the Yuri Geller shit of pretending that he really did have special powers, I'm glad he's distanced himself from that these days. Stage hypnotism does not exist, you cannot be made to do things you don't want to, what happens is that they either use a shill or more often the audience member just goes along with it.

The two key things to remember about mind fuck magic tricks are

a) Most times the solution to how they do is it just by going to far more effort that you would think is reasonable. You can say that about the close up card trick guy who has spent a stupid amount of time on sleight of hand. I'm like you, I always want to know the solution but it is usually quite mundane.
A great example is one of the most famous tricks in the world, David Copperfields levitation trick.
It's patented so you can read exactly how it's done at the patent office entry.

b) Secondly most big clever tricks are not created by the magicians that actually perform them, notice the name on the patent above. The smart people create the tricks and then sell them to the performers.

I disagree with the comment on stage hypnotism, that was the whole premise of the miracle show.
He basically had a ticking clock play all through the intermission , put people in to a relaxed state with various visual and audio triggers and see who bought it and then Mocked TV evangelists.
I've been hypnotised a number of times ( to fly) in the presence of my wife and we both laughed when he began the second half of show as we knew what he was gonna try and do .

But hey ho. The books and interviews I've seen he has always said these are parlour tricks and that's the bit he likes.

Hypnotism can make you feel relaxed but that's about it. It can't make you think you are a chicken or do anything you don't want to.
