I think it is more like a combo. An underlying health issue that impacts some control functions that has caused him to essentially lose a gear that he could control well. To compensate he has made awful choices by singing up instead of down, not stay still more often to better focus on his diaphragm control, and just an inability realize his limitations and how bad his choices are.

I'm desperately waiting for a new album in the 6 pack vibe; not like ADKOT.

The kind these guys used to make when ALL the songs sounded like the one's they reworked for ADKOT. . .

I don't think Eddie and Roth are capable of coming up with a full-length album where all the songs are compelling on the level that the 6 pack tunes were.

If I think of just the new tunes on ADKOT:

You and Your Blues - It's so-so, but really nothing much more outstanding than anything on the 1998 DLR Band album, truth be told.

Chinatown - Now THERE was a stellar new tune!

As Is - ANOTHER stellar new tune.

Honeybabysweetiedoll - I really liked the result, although at times it feels more like an experimental exercise than an actual song.

Trouble With Never - Felt like a rush job, and again is really nothing better than anything found on the 1998 DLR Band album.

Stay Frosty - It's a fun listen, but nothing too essential to my ears.

So out of 6 new offerings on ADKOT, 2 were outstanding, 1 was good in a weird way, 1 was funny as a goof, and 2 were average/fair at best.

That's about 50% of the new ADKOT output that was approaching 6 pack standards.

Not an overly positive prognosis for a new studio album where all the new tracks are excellent.

I mean, they recorded ADKOT in, what 2011? After they had already been back together 4 + years? And they still needed to rework...what...7 old demos to complete the album?

For whatever reason(s), these guys aren't really as interested in creating anymore as they are recreating.

I got the distinct feeling that outside of Tattoo and Stay Frosty the rest were retooled from previous material.

Just guessing but I suspect Chinatown and You and Your Blues may have been from the early 2000's failed Roth reunion attempts...

Tattoo was from the early 2000's as well.. I read an interview with Billy Sheehan where he mentioned having heard it around 01.

Uh, you really didn't mean to say "Tattoo" there, right? You know that's "Down In Flames". Which was already (more or less) re-written as "You're no Good" on Van Halen II, but they brought it back again anyway.

Chinatown was definitely from the 2000 sessions. That title was listed on many posts of "rumored" song titles from that era, and also later surfaced as a title from the solo album Dave was supposedly working on with Brian Young, Ray Luzier, and James Lomenzo (and maybe Toshi?) after VH Reunion 2.0 disintegrated. There's still a post somewhere over at VH Links that has this information listed.... even though the album itself never materialized, and we ended up with the mostly covers "Diamond Dave" album instead.

I may be alone on this, but I preferred Dave's dance 'demo' version of Honeybabysweetie etc - it was on one of the Roth Show episodes - to what it became on ADKOT.

I liked how he emphatically said "I'm all fucked up and you ta blame!" on the floor music version.

I'm glad they had the balls to leave the big F in Sinner's Swing. I could see substituting the word, but leaving a void doesn't work well.

Took me ages to track down the sampled backing vocals on that - the "gotta getaway gotta getaway from you" etc., and now I forget what the damn song was ... and now I won't be able to forget that I forget it ...
