N.W.A., Cheap Trick, Yes, Smiths, Steve Miller among Rock Hall nominees

Seems like a "make up" year. No worthy bands hit in 1990?

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Thrice-nominated N.W.A. -- perhaps riding the success of the dramatized biopic "Straight Outta Compton'' –- headlines an eclectic list of nominees that's heavy on first-timers to be the members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2016.

Fan favorites Chicago, Cheap Trick, the Cars, Deep Purple, Steve Miller, Nine Inch Nails, Yes and the Smiths also earned spots on the list of nominees. Rounding out the list announced under a 2 a.m. Thursday embargo by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are Chaka Khan, Chic, the JB's, Janet Jackson, Los Lobos and the Spinners.

Eight of the 15 nominees -- Chicago, Cheap Trick, the Cars, Chaka Khan, the JB's, Janet Jackson, Los Lobos and Steve Miller (who is nominated as a solo artist, not as part of the Steve Miller Band) -- are on the ballot for the first time.

The list also seems to pay heed in some manner to the hue and cry of fans over the exclusion of vintage bands from what many see as the golden age of rock 'n' roll.

The groundbreaking prog-rock band Yes, for example, has been eligible for enshrinement since 1994, yet has only one nomination on its resume. And now, even if they make the cut, it will be too late for founding member Chris Squire, the Yes bassist and only member of the band to appear on every album, who died of leukemia this year.

"The passion around this discussion is at the heart of what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame means to music fans,'' said Joel Peresman, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation in a statement issued by the Rock Hall announcing the nominations.

To be eligible for consideration, an artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to nomination, meaning the potential members of the Class of 2016 must have issued a first recording by 1990.

About 800 industry professionals -- including current hall of famers as well as historians, certain media members and others in the business -- will vote on who makes the cut.

Fans again will be permitted to vote on three websites -- rockhall.com, rollingstone.com and huffingtonpost.com -- starting Thursday, Oct. 8. However, those votes really will amount to little, as the top five vote-getters will be considered as a single ballot among the 800 or so that will be cast.

Last year, more than 60 million people voted in the Rock Hall's official fan balloting. Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails received 13 million total votes, meaning each fan vote was worth about 0.0000538 of a vote.

The new hall members -- usually between six and eight off the ballot, along with one or two members in the non-performer and lifetime achievement award categories -- will be announced in December.

The induction ceremony will be in New York City in April. This represents a change in the Foundation's previous plans to rotate the ceremony between Cleveland, where the Class of 2015 was inducted, Los Angeles and New York.

The on-sale date for tickets to the event for the general public will be announced at a later date. As in years past, the ceremony will broadcast on HBO, about a month afterwards.

So pick your six to eight nominees.

My easy answer would be "anyone but the Smiths." But I guess they are seen as influential, so maybe they get in.

    Chaka Khan, without Rufus? Nah.

    So my guess:

    Cheap Trick
The Cars (because Ben Orr was from Parma and was a friend of the family)
    The JB's
    NIN
NWA (not as a fan, but because ratings. since this airs on HBO now, do ratings matter?)
Yes (because the Rock Hall has a history of inducting people too late)
    Chic (because Nile Rodgers)

Can't see Janet Jackson getting in, but she does have a new album out and will be touring around the time of the inductions, and they love when inductees have something to promote.

    Los Lobos, Steve Miller, influential?

And the hardcore crybabies will still bitch about no nomination for Jethro Tull (hi, Mr. Walker!) and the Moody Blues. There's even a turd on a local forum who pushes for Melanie to be inducted.

Steve Miller belongs in a place with Rock and Roll in it's name a lot more than NWA. What a silly institution.

Deep Purple, Yes, and Chicago all in the same year? Is there enough space in the Hall for that?

If you count every member of every lineup that has used those three band names, it's probably bigger than the average small town.

Of course as far as who actually deserves the nomination from those camps, that narrows it down considerably.....

Deep Purple - Go with the Machine Head lineup, and call it good. David Covercheeseball should NEVER be in anything called a "Hall of Fame". Nor should any of the scabs that have toured with Gillan for the last 20 years.

Yes - Easiest resolution there is, if you participated in the "Union" album & tour, you're in. That covers the classic 70s lineup and the 80s "90125" variation. And for the love of Christ, do NOT perform with the tribute band singer!

Chicago - Completely worthless after Terry Kath died. Not sure how they even got nominated at this point.

As for Janet Jackson & Chic? It's not the fucking DISCO hall of fame, goddamn it.

Cheap Trick should be an easy nomination. Don't have to worry about any extra members who don't belong on stage.

Nine Inch Nails?? Has that been 25 years already?? Goddamn, now I feel old........

Cheap Trick could have 5, if they count Pete Comita.

NIN was nominated last year as well, their first year of eligibility.

Chicago was probably a token nomination to shut a bunch of crybabies up.

Yeah, I forgot that Cheap Trick had a spare bass player for a while. Probably because that was during their cheese ballad years and I'm trying to forget the whole portion of that existence.

I certainly hope they aren't taking the online poll at their website seriously, because that thing was being heavily diebolded to Janet Jackson last night, and there's not one fucking reason in the world why she should even be considered. Hell, she didn't even have actual musicians play one solo on a song, like her brother did.

Problem is it is the ROCK n roll HOF and for the most hard is ignored. It is really a pop music HOF and call it what it is. NWA has nothing to do with rock but most definitely deserve to be in the music HOF because of their influence on an entire genre. This HOF overall is such a joke

Well, considering he only played on a couple of songs, they'd have to include Jon Brant who played on 4 albums.

Nuno played on Black Cat...but yeah, that ain't enough.

I've heard her new album. Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. It's okay, not Rhythm Nation or janet. okay though.

    I forgot about that guy.

I don't think Nielsen will insist that his kid gets included.

And your induction class of 2016:

    Chicago
    Deep Purple
    Steve Miller
    Cheap Trick
    N.W.A.

Cheap Trick inductees will be drummer Bun E. Carlos, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson and vocalist Robin Zander.

Chicago: Terry Kath will be inducted posthumously, along with Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, Walter Parazaider and Danny Seraphine.

Joining Ritchie Blackmore on the Barclays Center stage (maybe; the band and Blackmore, who quit in 1993, have been feuding over royalty payments) will be former vocalists David Coverdale and Rod Evans, current vocalist Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, former bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes, and drummer Ian Paice. Keyboardist Jon Lord, who died in 2012, will be inducted posthumously.

Destined to be the most controversial inductee in the Class of 2016, N.W.A. featured DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and the late Eazy-E.

The five new inductees were chosen from a list of nominees that included Janet Jackson, Yes, the Cars, the Spinners, Nine Inch Nails, the Smiths, Chaka Khan, Chic, Los Lobos and the J.B's.

Good call on limiting Chicago's induction to only the original lineup. Bad call including Covercheesball and Hughes with Deep Purple. Not going to say it's bad to include Rod Evans ("Hush" is still one of their biggest songs, after all) but I'm shocked to see it after that bearing false witness faux-Purple tour he did in 1980.

How in the fuck can NWA get in and Chaka Khan didn't???? NWA was just one more filthy mouthed rap group in a sea of filthy mouthed rap groups! No talent and stupid fucking "songs" that sound like the lyrics were written by 13 year olds. You wanna listen to some bad ass black dude rap? Pop in some Ice T. Wanna listen to bad ass dirty rap? Pop in some Afroman!

Besides - young Chaka wearing those tight bell bottoms and Indian feathers is enough to make my zipper bust open! Damn that chick was hot! Good lord, you give me the young Chaka and I'd take her this Sunday and sit on the front row of my conservative Southern Baptist Church and kiss her on the cheek in front of every Honkie there!

NWA...that shit ain't even worth listening to! And how the hell are the Go Go's not in the Hall??? The first chick band to write their own songs and play their own instruments AND they were drunk dirty little whores. It doesn't get any more rock n roll than that!!

OK...lesbian tennis players (or other female athletes) from the 70's and 80's...why were the non-athletic chicks in Penthouse magazine so much more hotter, for simply laying about by a pool?

Because no matter what the paedophiles dictating the fashion & what we should like ever since the 70s tell us, us men, REAL men, like supple, yielding flesh with lots of curves & a whole lotta meat in the right places to get a good hold of.

Not overly muscular or ultra-thin bodies with the bones popping out. That's gay.

I agree...it would be like a Silvester Stallone /Martha Stewart combination of a horrible holiday food fest special.

Ugghh...I can just barely imagine the tv show...can you even fathom the guest stars?
Yup, whomever is still standing from the Rocky movies, plus (for no apparent reason) some odd folks from "Happy Days" and "Laverne And Shirley".

Man, I am so glad I borrowed the "Grantchester: Season One DVD" , plus loaded up on vodka bottles fer this dubious holiday weekend.

Peter Cetera teases Chicago reunion at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a time to celebrate some of the greatest musical acts of all-time. It's also a chance for artists who haven't been in the spotlight for a while to milk it for all it's worth.

Former Chicago bassist/singer Peter Cetera has been teasing his involvement, or lack thereof, with the band at April's Induction Ceremony in New York City since late last year. Cetera has used speculation on whether or not he'll perform to drive fans to his website.

On Sunday, Cetera posted that he'd be stopping by the "Mark in the Morning" radio show in Los Angeles Monday to reveal his decision on the Induction Ceremony. Yet, it was all one big tease.

"Well, you know what?" Cetera said when asked about if he'll perform with Chicago. "I am going to reserve any comments on that until tomorrow."

Thus, fans can expect confirmation on whether or not Cetera will hit the stage at the Barclay's Center on April 8 to come via his website Tuesday. For the record, the current members of Chicago have said they're open to playing with Cetera.

Cetera famously left Chicago in 1985 to pursue a solo career. While he tried to set up a touring schedule similar to the one Phil Collins had with Genesis, the rest of the bandmembers declined. Jason Scheff replaced Cetera.

As a founding member of Chicago, Cetera performed on some of the band's biggest hits, including "25 or 6 to 4," "Saturday in the Park," "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" and "If You Leave Me Now." He also scored a few solo hits like "Glory of Love" and "The Next Time I Fall" (with Amy Grant).

Cetera's potential performance with Chicago would be one of the more anticipated events at April's Induction Ceremony, considering Chicago won a controversial fan vote by a wide margin.

I expected Pete would probably sing with them at the show. But it's not a reunion without Terry Kath, and sorry, I can't send him back up.

Blackmore won't be at the induction.

Ritchie was honored by the offer of induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was discussing the possibility of attending, until we received correspondence from the President of the Rock Hall of Fame, who said that Bruce Payne, management for the current Deep Purple Touring Band, had said "No"..........!!!!!"
Therefore Ritchie will not be attending the ceremony. He sincerely thanks all the fans that voted for him for their support.

They better not let Gillan perform with the scabs then. They probably should just do like the Sex Pistols and all the relevant members of Van Halen did, and skip it altogether.

Deep Purple being inducted into the RnRHoF, and Blackmore WON'T be at the induction...

Well, even though the decision seems to have originated with the current version of Purple's management, it seems beyond ridiculous. I mean, the nucleus of Purple's output that is being honored is that of the albums through Made In Japan, because it is THAT body of work that made Purple legendary in the first place.

I mean, Purple weren't voted in on the strength of, say, the Come Taste The Band album...or the records the band has released post-1993/The Battle Rages On...

When you think of Deep Purple's guitarist, are the first names that spring to mind Tommy Bolin and Steve Morse?

But considering the lameness of that 'institution' it somehow seems only fitting that Blackmore won't be there, regardless of who is to blame for the decision (I know the RnRHoF can't 'make' the current version of DP insist Blackmore attend).

Maybe Morse before Bolin. Only because I used to subscribe to Musician magazine and I remember they did a cover story on Morse getting the Purple gig.

A Smiths reunion on stage for a reward alone would be worth the price of admission. I give it 40 seconds before they all start killing each other.

And nothing against Morse. He's a talented guitar player. The Dixie Dregs were great.

But Blackmore is the only Deep Purple guitarist who ever mattered, far as music created by the band that endures goes.

How many of you have heard about a band because it's in the "Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame"?

Conversely, how many of you have heard about the RNRHOF because of the bands that came to be in it?

This should put this institution's "importance" into perspective.

If I was a rock star, back when rock was great, I'd be dead. But I would've said in many interviews that trophies, awards & nominations are NOT rock n' roll, they are the antithesis of what rock n' roll is about - not giving a fuck against society standards & the need for validation - & if any fags of my band that managed to outlived me ever set foot on stage to get an award, the fans should pelt them with rotten groceries & piss on their lawn and/or front door.

The only thing Dave & Van Halen did right in the last ten years was not giving one single shit about their nomination.

Being bands can't get inducted until 25 years after the release of their first record, I sure hope most have heard about the band before they hit the HOF.

And being the Rock Hall is a half hour from here, and the Cleveland Plain Dealer and WMMS were all over bringing the HOF here in the early to mid 80's...yeah, I'm aware of it.

I think the intention started out good. Once Ahmet Ertegun died, Jann Wenner and Suzan Evans kind of took over the nomination process and a lot of people think they fucked everything up.

There's a guy on a local forum who, every year, gripes that late 60's/early 70's singer Melanie has not been considered for rock hall induction. He cites her charity work etc back when she was active, and there are always people who say yeah, back then that wasn't the rock and roll thing to do. Now you can't get artists to STFU about their pet causes, and their being socially aware is the thing to do.

The HOF induction committee and the actual HOF itself are two separate entities. Don't let the shit coming from the NYC based induction committee tarnish your opinion about the building and the people that run it.

Right. And that's why Morse and Bolin aren't getting in. I'm sure Morse will be onstage if Purple decides to perform.
