Being from So Cal and being just a few years younger than Dave myself I can relate to some of that. Never spiked my hair but tried the towel dry after washing but don't bother to brush look. It wasn't much of a change for me because my hair is stringy and ends up looking like that after a while anyway. The pants he's talking about are Wayfarers. Never went to that much trouble to put mine on though. Had the platform shoes too. Mine looked like those old black and white cheerleader shoes girls wore in the 50s. Saddle shoes. Had a couple pair of extra long Levi's big bells for wearing with them. Had the big jacket too. But we used ours to smuggle beer into the theatre for midnight showings of Rocky Horror and such.

Interesting story about early 70s LA I suppose, but really not much to do with Bowie.

Interesting story though. I haven't read any of the VH or Roth books (if such a critter exists) but I assumed he was born with a golden spoon in his mouth but now I think his parents raised him to do for himself.

That's improved Roth Show content... sure wish he had Shelly producing the videos. Visually it's right up there with watching grass grow and paint dry...

Ah, it seems to have been a combination of the two. His dad made a friggin fortune in real estate and being a surgeon. I can't remember when his dad bought Rothwood, but it had to have cost a ton since it was supposedly worth around 7 mill back in the mid 80s after Dave bought it from his dad (or so the story goes).

Seems like it's around 14,000 square feet. Big ass place. But from a lot of the pics and videos have had put up over the years it looks like it's mostly empty. Well, devoid of much furniture. So Dave lives in a big ol' empty mansion and I bet there ain't much fun going on behind those gates.

^^^This. Dave appears to be a lonely old recluse.

I think his dad was a bit of a rags to riches story but that's not a great narrative for Dave who would prefer that was his story because rich kid becomes rock star is clearly not cool.

Rich kid becomes anything is not cool which is part of why I find the Trump phenomena so inexplicable but that's another story.

To be fair though it does seem that Dave genuinely is not hugely into the possessions and money thing. Hagar is but maybe that's because he grew up poor.

I ain't buying it. Doubtful Nathan Roth was ever even close to poor and I don't think most rock fans give a shit whether a musician or musicians they like grew up poor or rich.
