It took me three seconds to find, and I've been drinking all day.

Always thought that was a weird dynamic - what's his role in a cameo like that (himself or another character) and how could he stand for a crack against Jewish folk when he's purportedly sitting at the table when it's said

He was playing himself, hence the "writing off condoms" line. But I don't remember an explanation of how exactly David Lee Roth would know a bunch of Jersey mobsters.

Good point too - but if it was Roth himself then why would they make a Yiddish joke...

The whole thing didn't make sense but it was cool at the time

Have you ever sat in a room full of interesting strangers and had the awkward moment when nobody knew what to say..?

A simple question that any Bozo™ can easily answer generally is a enough to spark a conversation and then the party gets going... This generally works with the exception of when you're surrounded by assholes who just turn their noses up and ignore the person wondering why the idiot couldn't figure it out themselves...

The context of this whole scenario was to mirror the historic reality back when Frank Sinatra and other entertainment celebrities were known to associate with known mobsters and high stakes poker games were common events where the two worlds would meet.

The Sopranos writers used the same recipe but kicked it up into modern times and included the real Frank Sinatra Jr in a couple of these poker game scenes. Dave was hanging around New York back then when he got the lucky call to be included in one of these story lines. The Yiddish jokes were a depiction of the bigotry that was quite real and common among Mafia types... these guys are all hard assed criminals not nice politically correct human beings.

This is actually a timely subject given the passing of Frank Sinatra Jr this week...

I hear ya about Sinatra and the mafia and all that but there was a chapter devoted to anti-Semitism in his book - dolomite motherfucker or words to that effect

Must have been an add on in his absence or the cash was good in those lean years

If like me you are doing a Sopranos rewatch during the current apocalypse I recommend the Talking Sopranos podcast which is also on YouTube but I think these things work better just with the audio as you play Pacman in supermarket aisles trying to avoid the unmasked ghosts.

Like the hugely popular West Wing Weekly podcast it really benefits from being done by people in the show in this case Christopher and Uncle Juniors sidekick Bobby Bacala.

They have only reached the start of season 3 so no comment on the Roth episode yet. It wouldn't completely surprise me if they got him on, they seem to have access to any cast members they want.

This is the official YouTube channel for the Talking Sopranos Podcast featuring Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa.

Dave was apparently friends with Little Steven so that might have something to do with why he had a cameo.

Dave looks absolutely awful in this. That ridiculous hair. This was the period of his mid-life crisis, not accepting it's time to trim down the hair and stop with the bleach He looked 80 years old. He looks younger now than he did then.

In Season 3 Episode 3 you can hear part of Ain't Talkin Bout Love briefly as it's being played in the background on the radio in a cafe.

If you ever wondered why you don't hear stuff like that too often I was listening to an interview with one of the producers today and he said that the music rights budget on the Sopranos had to be huge to cover broadcast in the US and worldwide in perpetuity plus on the DVD. One of the examples he gave was ATBL and said they had to pay $100k for it.
