I wouldn't be surprised at all. They had a total mobilization draft in WWII, and many celebrities just felt compelled to serve, even in dangerous combat roles like Clark Gable as a gunner on a bomber (B-17 IIRC)...
What is surprising was General Stewart's unapologetic service in an unpopular war doing a fairly unpopular part of the war. Whatever my opinion of the war, I respect the fact that he was a complete volunteer and quiet professional in Vietnam as a senior officer on a B-52 I think.
