Turkish Radiohead fans attacked at listening party in Istanbul

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...fb_gu#comments

A group of Radiohead fans has been attacked by a mob of men carrying sticks and bottles as they held a listening party of the band’s music in Istanbul.

The incident, which was largely captured on video, occurred on Friday night at the Velvet Indieground record store – a popular destination for Turkish and foreign music fans in the Istanbul district of Cihangir. There was at least one injury, with a picture of a person with a bloodied shirt, purportedly from the attack, posted on Twitter.

The video shows a visibly angry man storming into the record store as employees and customers listen to Radiohead’s new album, A Moon Shaped Pool. Most of the people in the store hastily leave. A waiting mob then reportedly attacked the group and the door of the record store was smashed, although there were no reported serious injuries from the assault.

Velvet Indieground staff said the altercation was caused by a group of about 20 men who were unhappy that the store was playing music and handing out alcohol during the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims are expected to fast during the day. Although alcohol is generally considered forbidden by Islam, only a few countries ban it and drinking is largely tolerated in much of the Middle East.

A Reddit post from someone claiming to be one of the hosts of the listening party said that the group was “determined to kill us”.

“We were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads, I don’t even know how we made it out,” the post read, before adding a later update that everyone escaped serious injury.

“For the first time in my life, I was scared of being killed. Can’t even think right now, just a blank stare at the walls. Weird Fishes is my favorite song in the world, and I was dancing to it outside when it all started. Now it has so much more meaning for me.
”Radiohead, who released A Moon Shaped Pool to widespread critical acclaim in May, released a statement expressing sympathy for their fans.

“Our hearts go out to those attacked tonight at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul,” the statement read. “We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violence as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support.”

The attacks come at a time of heightened tension in Istanbul. Authorities have banned transgender and gay pride marches that were due to take place in June, after an ultra-nationalist group warned it would not allow them to go ahead.

The Istanbul governor’s office said the marches, which would have taken place shortly after last weekend’s massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Florida, would not go ahead due to concerns over public safety.

Radiohead Ramadan attack protestors teargassed in Istanbul

Turkish police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who demonstrating against an attack on Radiohead fans at an Istanbul record store.

A mob of two dozen men stormed the Velvet IndieGround shop on Friday night, beating up customers attending an album launch party for drinking alcohol and listening to music during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In response, several hundred protesters gathered on Saturday night in Istanbul’s upscale Cihangir neighbourhood to denounce the attack, shouting “shoulder to shoulder against fascism” and calling Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan a “murderer” and “thief”.

Buses of riot police and water-cannon vehicles swiftly moved in, dispersing the protesters within an hour by lobbing teargas into the crowd.

Even small-scale protests in Turkey are routinely met by teargas and water cannons since nationwide anti-government demonstrations erupted in summer 2013, prompting an intensifying crackdown on dissent.

Two protesters in Cihangir were arrested, Turkey’s Dogan news agency reported. Two men who were detained for attacking the record store were released on Sunday.

Velvet IndieGround was holding a release party for Radiohead’s new album, A Moon Shaped Pool, when screaming men smashed up the store, beating customers with sticks and bottles.

Radiohead condemned the attack. “We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past,” the British rock band said in a statement.

Men wielding sticks and chanting “takbeer” and “allahu akbar” were seen marching through Cihangir after police broke up Saturday night’s protest.

Days earlier, a ultranationalist group threatened to forcibly break up next weekend’s Istanbul gay pride march, the largest in the Middle East. Authorities have cancelled the parade, citing security concerns following the attack in Orlando.

Turkish LGBT groups have vowed to defy the cancellation order, responding: “We didn’t ask you for permission.”
