David Lee Roth's No Holds Bar-B-Que Online

David Lee Roth has exhumed his infamously bizarre No Holds Bar-B-Que project, uploading the entire film to his YouTube channel.
Bar-B-Que‘s reappearance comes in the midst of a flurry of renewed online activity for Roth, who resumed posting several months ago after pulling a disappearing act in early 2015 — and more importantly for longtime fans of the once-and-again Van Halen frontman, it offers an opportunity to take a firsthand look at a release that raised more than a few eyebrows when it first appeared in 2002.

During an interview with the A.V. Club, Roth described the then-new film as “A variety of ingredients, I think probably that you’d recognize instantly. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, Soupy Sales, Groucho, Kurosawa, Hugh Hefner and on and on and on. But I’ve woven it together in a form that I think is much more appropriate for our national attention-deficit syndrome, or whatever it is we’re having. As in, ‘Too hip, gotta go, golly, look at the time. Gotta go change the air in my tires, love to hang, bye.'”

Of the project’s frenetic pace, Roth pointed to the modern consumer’s “frenzied” biorhythms and added, “I tried to create a different type of television — it’s not really a show and it’s not really a biography. There’s a lot of show-and-tell in there. I’m not really sure what it is. Perhaps that makes it pure. Like Picasso said, it’s bound to go over some people’s heads, so I created a version with a director’s commentary.”

No Holds Bar-B-Que never really saw an official release, although VHS copies inexplicably circulated among select press outlets at the time. CDNow offered a somewhat bemused take on the project, saying it “opens with Roth flailing about in a large city in some sort of Kung Fu/T’ai Chi-style dance with swords and poles” and “only gets stranger” from there.

“Roth dresses up like a sailor and hosts a luau, hunts gorillas in the jungle, sports a ninja costume (while his cover of Gerry Rafferty’s ‘Baker Street’ plays in the background) and plays with more swords (did we mention there are a lot of swords in this video?),” reads the description. “Not only that, but we also see Roth in army fatigues, carrying some sort of rocket launcher, wandering about a dark cave (presumably hunting for Osama Bin Laden?); cavorting with pregnant girls drinking Bud Light and dressing as an Arab sheik — all “live from the Mojo Dojo.”

For years, No Holds Bar-B-Que only circulated on the bootleg trading circuit, but thanks to Roth’s generosity, now it’s free for all to see. If you’re looking for a little extra Diamond Dave in your day — or just in the mood for some truly surreal entertainment — kick back and soak it all in above.

Caution: Alcohol or your drug of choice should be heavily consumed prior to watching this video. Otherwise it's not gonna make a bit of sense.

Do you think he thought that's what this would lead to? Or did he think it would lead to another movie opportunity?

Was there a point to this thing other than to give Dave something to do? Reminds a bit of the DLR Band album in that he ostensibly created something for whomever would have an interest in it, then didn't make it readily available to them!

For those who've actually watched the BBQ, does it make any sense, or is it just a series of odd/strange vignettes that only Dave understands?

If you watch the video you'll see Roth doing air checks for his old website. So at least part of it was going to be used for his site. Slawterhouse had mentioned him having the sand brought in to fill in the tennis courts so it was made while he still had his original site.

But yeah, it was probably just one big art project that wound up costing more and more money. He did use it for backing footage on the big screen on the Dave and Sam tour and he did sell copies at some of the shows but that was it. Hell, I probably distributed more copies than Dave did.

I watched the whole thing yesterday and liked it. Especially for the "I do whatever the fuck I'm up to"-attitude.

Must have been a hell of a party shooting it. Crazy and colorful. At least Dave never fails to surprise us.

He got 10 years worth of art for websites and posters and so on.

I had a crazy theory that it could also be some sort of accountancy thing too by using his home he could offset the high property taxes as it being a place of business or somesuch. That would explain him saying 'We are at the Mojo Dojo' every few minutes...

The Bar-B-Que didn't really seem to have much of a point, career-wise, beyond just keeping things moving or keeping things interesting.

It seemed kind of weird that it didn't get released, but then by the time 2001 rolled around Roth didn't have a record company with which to even get it distributed.

The ten years between 1996 and 2006 were just odd in terms of what Dave was doing musically and putting out there. Most of his undertakings during that period came across as sort of one-off, odd turns. Almost like he was just marking time until Van Halen made another reunion attempt. And those years also saw him trying to navigate a new landscape where the scope was much smaller than where his career had been in the 1980s. Sort of like he was trying to find his niche in a new era where what he was doing wasn't particularly relevant to the general public.
