American football has overtaken the football the rest of the world knows on at least one metric.

The Dallas Cowboys are the world's most valuable sports team for 2016, worth about $4 billion, according to Forbes. The National Football League franchise's value popped 25 percent from last year, the publication said.

The results mark the first time since Forbes' rankings started in 2011 that a soccer team did not take the top spot. Spanish juggernaut Real Madrid fell to second, but its value still rose 12 percent to $3.7 billion.

Madrid's rival FC Barcelona came in third, with its value also rising 12 percent to $3.6 billion. The New York Yankees and British soccer giant Manchester United rounded out the top five, worth about $3.4 and $3.3 billion respectively.

Here are the 10 most valuable sports franchises in the world, according to Forbes:

    1. Dallas Cowboys, $4 billion
    2. Real Madrid, $3.7 billion
    3. FC Barcelona, $3.6 billion
    4. New York Yankees, $3.4 billion
    5. Manchester United, $3.3 billion
    6. New England Patriots, $3.2 billion
    7. New York Knicks, $3 billion
    8. Washington Redskins, $2.9 billion
    9. New York Giants, $2.8 billion
    10. Los Angeles Lakers, $2.7 billion

The Knicks at number 7? lol. I think the team owns MSG so that probably helps.

Yeah and Partick Thistle were a disappointing 14th...

It's actually a list of the teams everyone else hates apart from maybe Barcelona that seem to get a bye out of that category for some reason...

As far as I'm concerned the Los Angeles Dodgers are the most valuable sports team because of Dodger Stadium. It's priceless.
