Musical Tastes of Trump and Clinton Voters: Led Zeppelin or Linkin Park?

Voters who say they’ll back Donald Trump are more likely to be fans of Garth Brooks, Van Halen and Slayer, while voters backing Hillary Clinton listen to Beyonce, Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers, according to a survey of 1,308 online music listeners conducted by research firm Audiokite.

In terms of genres, would-be Clinton voters are two times more likely to prefer jazz and three times more likely to prefer folk music, according to Audiokite’s survey. Trump supporters, meanwhile, are more than twice as likely to prefer country and metal. Diving deeper into subgenres, Clinton backers lean toward trance and ambient electronic, while Trump enthusiasts go for Christian country and rockabilly.

Even if candidates do take the trouble of securing the blessing of musicians, selecting an anthem can be tricky business. Ronald Reagan, for example, got into hot water when he used Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” Reagan referred to the song as a “message of hope,” but the song was actually about a Vietnam veteran who returns to America with “nowhere to run and nowhere to go.” For Clinton, Mitchell recommends The Rolling Stones’ “Time is on My Side.” As for Trump, a safe bet would be Van Halen’s “Best of Both Worlds.”

If you’d guessed from the headline that Van Halen listeners are more likely to vote for Trump, or that Linkin Park fans are Clinton supporters, you’d be incorrect, at least according to Audiokite’s survey.

Turning musical notes into presidential votes is not a given. As with any survey, correlation is not the same as causation. Not all Beyonce listeners will vote for Clinton, just as getting an endorsement from Garth Brooks will not guarantee that all Brooks’ fans will vote for you. The survey simply shows a correlation between what people in the survey listen to and the candidates they support.
