  • Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at Red Bull Music Academy

Red Bull has a music academy? WTF?

Anyways...they got Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to sit down and chat. Whole clip is 2 1/2 hours, the last half hour is questions from the audience. Most of it is about writing, but with a little production talk. I liked all the Prince stuff but a lot of it is pretty well known.

Some highlights (stolen from another site):

30:54 - They talk about how the group "The Time" formed.
33:00 - They talk and laugh about the day Alexander O'Neal was fired and replaced with Morris Day as the lead singer for the Time.
35:40 - They admit that Prince wrote and produced all of "The Time's" early music.
45:00 - Jimmy Jam and Terry lewis play a little bit of the song "777-9311" and Jimmy Jam talks about Prince making him a better performer during rehearsals of the song 777-9311.
50:50 - They talk about the day Prince fired them from "The Time".
57:34 - They talk about using the 808 drum machine in their early productions.
1:08:18 - They talk about making Cherrelle's song "Saturday Love".
1:25:00 - They talk about how they felt about Hip Hop and rap music in the early 80's.
1:31:05 - Jimmy Jam does a impression of what the rap music that his kids listen to sounds like.
1:33:35 - They talk about how they feel about sampling.
1:35:47 - They talk about making the Janet Jackson song “That’s The Way Love Goes” .
2:12:00 - Jimmy Jam talks about making the song "Escapade" and what equiptment they used to make the song.
2:23:05 - They talk about making the Janet Jackson song "Got Till It's Gone" with the "Joni Mitchell" sample.
2:30:32 - They talk about their use of the "Linn Drum" in their music productions.

Writing In All Proper Case Takes Extra Time, Is Confusing To Read, And Is Completely Pointless.
Working...
