Also, if you look at war propaganda cartoons made in that era, while the Germans were portrayed as either evil or run of the mill idiots (usually both) the Japanese were portrayed in the same cartoons by using the most racist stereotypes imaginable.

They convinced them they'd be better be off committing suicide than letting us take them alive. Thousands of Japanese did just that. And that was before we dropped the bombs on them. We did that because they vowed never to surrender. Who knows how long the war in the Pacific would have gone on if we hadn't.

That is debatable, I think it's been argued on here before.

The alternate possibility is that the nukes were dropped to scare the shit out the Russians and to test them. That's backed up a bit by the second bomb being a different type and dropped before they had time to sort out a surrender and that Russia had just started a new front attacking Japan.

I'm not buying that. I don't think Truman wanted to drop the bombs but he was convinced he was saving lives on both sides by doing so.

It's not that well known but use of the bomb on Japan had to be approved by Britain and Canada or it would have been a breach of a treaty because of the Quebec Agreement.

So blame is shared. These were different times and conventional bombing in Dresden was worse than what happened in Hiroshima. I still remain sceptical about the whole thing especially Nagasaki.

The part I love about the bomb is they weren't sure if it would cause a chain reaction in our atmosphere and destroy it but they exploded the Trinity bomb anyways. Ha! ha!
