Trump suggests Jewish community is spreading anti-Semitic threats

Trump suggests Jewish community is spreading anti-Semitic threats
    BY Adam Edelman

President Trump appeared to suggest Tuesday that the wave of bomb threats against Jewish community centers across the U.S. could be coming from within the Jewish community itself, according to a Pennsylvania state lawmaker present for the comments.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who was part of a group of state attorneys general meeting with Trump at the White House Tuesday, relayed Trump's comments about the bomb threats to Buzzfeed News, explaining that the commander-in-chief seemed to indicate he felt some of the threats were being made from the inside, as part of a potential effort "to make others look bad."

"He just said, 'sometimes it's the reverse, to make people, or to make others, look bad,'" Shapiro, a Democrat, said, repeating Trump's alleged response to questions during the meeting about the large number of bomb threats against Jewish community centers in recent months.

"It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me," Shapiro said of Trump's remarks.

Shapiro claimed Trump used the word "reverse," "two or three times," adding that Trump also called the threats "reprehensible" toward the beginning of his remarks.

Trump also said he would address the bomb threats during his speech Tuesday night before the joint session of Congress, according to Shapiro.

The White House disputed Shapiro’s description of Trump’s comments.

“This is not what he said or meant,” a White House spokesperson told the Daily News in an email.

“He means (he) was referring to protesters," the spokesperson added.

Trump's latest comments came one day after yet another wave of bomb threats hit Jewish community centers across America, including one in Staten Island.

Jewish centers in at least nine states faced threats throughout Monday morning and afternoon, causing closures and evacuations, but there were no actual attacks.

The targeted locations included at least four New York centers — in Staten Island, Tarrytown, New Rochelle and Plainview, according to officials and center representatives. Bomb threats also came in for centers in Cherry Hill, N.J.; Providence, R.I.; Asheville, N.C.; Mobile, Ala.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Talleyville, Del.; and Indianapolis, Ind., according to local reports.

A spokesman for Trump condemned the threats Monday afternoon.

The latest calls, however, come amid another trend of anti-Semitic vandalism nationwide: In the past week, dozens of headstones at Jewish cemeteries in Philadelphia and St. Louis were vandalized. Residents in Miami Beach, Fla. on Sunday reported finding swastikas carved onto their cars.

Law enforcement officers across the U.S. told The News Tuesday that there was absolutely no reason to believe Trump's apparent claim — that such acts were being perpetrated by Jews — was occurring.

“There is no evidence of that,” said Lt. Fredrick Lemons, of the University City Police Department, which is investigating incidents of vandalism at a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis,

“None of that at all,” he said, referring to Trump’s apparent suggestion that Jewish communities were committing anti-Semitic acts themselves. “We are still investigating.”

Lemons added that it has not yet been determined what the motivation of the vandalism is.

Trump has faced scathing criticism for having not responded earlier and more forcefully to the increasing threats — and his latest comments prompted another round of backlash.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman tweeted he was, "sadly not surprised — but certainly disturbed — by Pres.Trump's apparent claim that threats against Jews are false flags."

But in another twist, the White House incorrectly claimed that Schneiderman was among the attorneys general that met with Trump Tuesday morning.

In addition, the inaccurate list of attorneys general provided by the White House misspelled American Samoa (which also has an attorney general) as "American Sonoma."

Schneiderman's office, however, told The News that he returned to New York Monday night — after spending the day at the first day of the National Association of Attorneys General conference in Washington — and did not visit the White House or meet with Trump on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told The News that Trump’s remarks were “an absurd and obscene statement,” while the Anti-Defamation League said it was “astonished.”

“It is incumbent upon the White House to immediately clarify these remarks,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement. “In light of the ongoing attacks on the Jewish community, it is also incumbent upon the President to lay out in his speech tonight his plans for what the federal government will do to address this rash of anti-Semitic incidents.”

“If the reports are true, President Trump has gone over the Anti-Semitic deep end,” Steven Goldstein, the executive director of the Anne Frank Center, said in a statement.”

"Mr. President, have you no decency? To cast doubt on the authenticity of Anti-Semitic hate crimes in America constitutes Anti-Semitism in itself, and that's something none of us ever dreamed would disgrace our nation from the White House,” Goldstein added. “If the reports are true, you owe the American Jewish community an apology."

Members of Trump's inner circle have also faced similar criticism over not responding forcefully to anti-Semitism.

Earlier Tuesday, a former Trump campaign adviser, Anthony Scaramucci, posted an ambiguous screed to his Twitter wall that appeared to connect the recent bomb threats to Democratic lawmakers.

"It's not yet clear who the #JCC offenders are. Don't forget @TheDemocrats effort to incite violence at Trump rallies," Scaramucci tweeted, along with a link to a story from alt-new site Breitbart alleging that Democrats had hired "trained provocateurs to instigate violence at Republican events" during the 2016 campaign.

The one thing Trump isn't is anti-semetic. It's dumb looking for that when there are so many other things to be concerned about.

Whether Cheeto himself is anti-semitic or not really isn't the point when he has people like Bannon & Sessions in his cabinet, has endorsements from the likes of David DuKKKe and that little nazi fuck Richard Spencer, and had white supremacists all over his rallies. All the hate crimes that have taken place in this country recently (anti-semitic or otherwise) have all been committed by Cheeto supporters. Those who didn't openly admit to being his fans were shouting things like "get the fuck out of my country", which they obviously didn't get from Bernie Sanders (or God forbid, even Hillcunt).

One would think the converted Shiksa Ivanka could appeal to Daddy Orangebucks to do something about this, but I suspect Herr Cheeto doesn't want to piss off his own base - even if he's personally appalled by what they do.

You are now approaching middle age and still hating tens of millions of people based on one English Jewish magician who fucked you and then dumped you for a younger assistant. Not everyone can become Debbie McGee.

Cenk and Anna are two people from very religious conservative households and they pulled their pants down and slid on the ice. Such people tend to go atheist and liberal due to their rebellion. Seen it many times.

    With Christopher Brennan
Someone said to me recently that (and I'm paraphrasing slightly, here) "Trump is a big buffoon, and 99% of the things he says are crazy...but every once in awhile he DOES say SOMETHING I agree with..." like that somehow legitimizes him.

Well, I'm sure if I worked in, say, a psych ward...every now and then one of the patients MIGHT chant SOMETHING (such as "I like pudding!") that I would also agree with (since I, too, like pudding!).

Sadly, I now have a president I simply do not think is in command of a deep well of factual information (and I doubt he would be able to do much with such data even if it was given to him) on virtually any subject or instance I can think of. My President says one thing after another which is demonstrably false, and plenty of things which are largely untrue despite having a few grains of truth in them.

Whenever my President tweets/speaks, my reflex is to assume it is a lie until I can verify it, so casual is my President's relationship with the truth, facts and data. And, just as sadly, my President is surrounded by plenty of enablers (including SOME non-family members that - even though they have a different ideology than mine - I really thought would know better) who will constantly back him up when he says things which aren't true: "Well, the President believes that" a common refrain. I guess this is some sort of faith-based data set.

My concern looking ahead is wondering about North Korea and Iran, and what would happen if the US should need to intervene militarily down the line due to the nuclear strategies of those countries. North Korea and Iran should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons. End of story. As to if the US can prevent that without bombing those nations, or if the US can build coalitions with nations surrounding those two countries to deal with them...all of this will take diplomatic skill, a steady temperament and a methodical mind. In no way whatsoever do I think Trump is up to any of that.

The Obama tapping thing is maybe the most bizarre thing so far.

It seems to confirm that he believes everything on Breitbart and an idiot in the way he dealt with that false knowledge.

    Both these things are worrying.

Let's suppose Trump's campaign associates HAD been subject to wiretapping via a FISA warrant requested from the FISA Court from either the NSA or the FBI as part of an NSA/FBI investigation into Russian interference in the election.

None of that means "Obama" bugged him unless the FISA request was initiated by the White House. Obama claims the request was not initiated by him or the White House. I suppose if the Republicans in the House want to find out if that is true or not, they should feel free to investigate that. Comey has already, in effect, denied that was true. All an investigation would do is bring the question back around to why a FISA request was granted regarding Trump's campaign associates in the first place. So, if Trumps' Saturday tweet and a subsequent House Republican investigation are designed to change the focus from Flynn, Sessions, Manafort, Stone, Page, Kushner, Gordon (and who knows how many other Trump aides, advisers and associates will pop out of the woodwork as the investigation widens)...well, good luck with that.

And all Trumps claim of Obama bugging him does is make one naturally ask as to why Obama - or the NSA/FBI - WOULD want to bug him: the Russian contacts.

Even as a muddying-of-the-waters strategy, Trumps "Obama bugged me" tweet hasn't substantially distracted the 'lamestream media' from the Trump Campaign Russian contacts and connections. If anything, such a strategy just reinforces the notion that the FBI and NSA apparently took the Russian issue seriously enough to ask for a FISA warrant. Impulsive and ham-handed on Trumps part.

It has been reported that Trump reads (and has done so for a long time) the NYT on a daily basis - that, in fact, it is the primary daily print publication he reads on a daily basis. You wouldn't know it from the things he communicates, though. Strictly 2nd hand Alex Jones-style "Truther" non-substantiated pablum is what comes out of his mouth. While that kind of verbiage may be laughable when emanating from a guy on a street corner selling pencils out of a cup, it is VERY worrying when it comes from the President.

Is Trump too stupid to realize that, as pResident, all he has to do is simply call the FISA court, ask them if a warrant was ever issued, and then demand to see it. At least then (assuming such a document existed) he would have basis for having a meltdown over it. Rather than basing it on something he read on Breitfart or heard Alex Jones screaming about.

Exactly that's what my idiot comment was about.

Putin does a lot of complex muddying even to the point of setting up fake opponents and then they bring themselves down causing a constant distraction and reality show that he writes.

I assumed for a while that Trump was going to follow the same model but if he is trying to do this then he's just not smart and even tempered enough.

Tillerson and Mattis are already talking to countries about the geopolitical situation regarding North Korea and Iran. You really think the Trump administration is any worse than the Obama Administration or the George W. Bush Administration? Both those administrations created a hell of a mess and a lot of debt. Mattis has no love for Putin.

Most of our modern presidents have been idiots. It's given Saturday Night Live a lot of inspiration over the years.

Tillerson and Mattis certainly SHOULD currently (as they have been sworn in to Cabinet positions) be talking to countries (including the Russian Federation) about the geopolitical situation regarding Iran and North Korea. Both of those situations have been festering for well over a decade, and it is to neither W's or Obama's credit that they have been doing so.

Neither of those people have much to do with Flynn, Sessions, Kushner, Manafort, Stone, Page and Gordon and the conversations they were having with Russian officials during the campaign and the transition period after Obama applied sanctions. Unless one thinks Kushner, Manafort, Stone, Page or Gordon were potential Cabinet picks and as such needed to be in contact with Russian officials.

So your logic is that because W's and Obama's presidencies made mistakes which created messes in the form of botched international undertakings and large fiscal debts, therefore it doesn't matter if those trends continue with the present administration? Or is it that because W and Obama's administrations were stocked with people who had decades of political/governmental experience and mistakes were still made, the fact that Trump's administration lacks a comparable amount of that experience is somehow a plus or makes Trump's administration (for lack of a better term on my part) "less worse" than those of his two immediate predecessors? The "to hell with the experts" theory? I'm not trying to be a douche, here, I'm just a little unclear what the broader point you were trying to make is. I think it's along the lines of us being fucked no matter who is in office. Is that what you were inferring?

To be fair, it's too soon to declare Trump's administration and presidency a disaster: there haven't been any substantial international tests put to our new president yet (although the recent N. Korean missile launches are troubling), and a Trump Budget hasn't been submitted yet, so Trump doesn't "own" the economy, yet.

A man jumped from the 10th story and is falling to the ground. A woman at the 4th floor sees him from her window and asks, "Hey, how's it going?". The man replies "So far, so good."

Insanity is continuing to do the same things that fail. From my observation the so called "Experienced" people have gotten us into a hell of a mess. Yup. Too soon to actually see how the Trump Administration is going to work out but one thing for sure, it's not business as usual and that scares people. As far as North Korea goes it's China's ugly step child. Since we are all in the peanut gallery and the information we get is mostly shit, we really aren't in a position to really make a proper analysis of all this geopolitical crap. To be honest, I'm amazed we haven't destroyed ourselves already. Just be happy the sun came up.

This is the Brexit argument - things are shit and they couldn't get any worse.

It shows a massive lack of imagination and knowledge of history and just facts in general.

Oh the European Union was just a clever way of a few people consolidating wealth and power for themselves. It was a clever scam sold on convenience. I think the Brexit has more to do with people waking up to the fact they have nothing to gain being in the EU. If your last name is Rothschild then you are all for it.

Well, I suppose going by that somewhat diminished metric - talk about hurtling the lowered bar - that the sun came up IS something to be happy about...I guess.
