    Leisure suit Bond...

Always liked when they were the Sunday night ABC movie. ABC announcer (and Cleveland's "Ghoulardi") Ernie Anderson: "And now, The Spy Who Loooooved Me."

Connery was the "real" Bond, of course. But most of us in our generation probably saw a Roger Moore movie first. He certainly did a better job in the part than most of those who followed him (Daniel Craig is OK, but Dalton & Remington Steele???). Moore's movies were a little on the campy side, but entertaining, at least.

And his old 60s TV series, "The Saint" wasn't bad either (that's how he got chosen for the Bond role in the first place)

    RIP, Mr. Bond.

Wow. Limey children are slaughtered at a concert and all Niki Wiki can do is reminiscence about one particular dead limey who was a shit actor to begin with.

    RIP, Sir Roger Moore.

Liked him as Bond almost as much as Connery. Saw him regularly on TV in "The Persuaders!" once a week in the 70s. He was so great in his role as Lord (Brett) Sinclair.

A class act. Loved him as Bond as he brought a tongue in cheek aspect to the role. A great UNICEF representative as well.
    RIP Sir Roger

Moore was cool as the Beau Maverick but I didn't care for him as James Bond.
    RIP Roger.

    RIP, Mr. Bond.
My first exposure to the James Bond series was through the Roger Moore films. I think the first one I ever saw was...Moonraker, maybe? Or maybe The Spy Who Loved Me...one of those two. I didn't even see a Connery Bond flick until Never Say Never Again (which I liked) came out in the early 1980s, and I think I've only seen bits and pieces of the earlier/1960s Connery flicks. In point of fact, I'd sooner watch a Daniel Craig Bond flick than a Connery one.

So, growing up when I always heard how "Connery is the 'real'/best Bond" I never cared much: the Moore films got the job done just fine for me. At least until A View To A Kill, when it became obvious that Moore was a BIT too long in the tooth for that role. But I still like the Moore Bond flicks. The longer he stuck with the series, the more of a wink and a nod he gave to the whole biz, even when onscreen.

I think For Your Eyes Only is my all-time fave Bond flick.

    Godspeed, Roger Moore.

Really? Wow that's an unusual point of view but I sort of get it.

Top trivia it's the only one I think where someone was actually killed making it, a stuntman in one of the ski chases and also had a trans 'Bond girl' so way ahead of the game.

Personally I hated the cold open which was too Austin Powers for me even at the time but there are some great moments.

I was lucky enough to go to a one man show with Roger Moore just last year and he was great.

Anyone that has read any of his books or paid attention to him at all has to know that he was one of the good guys, totally self deprecating and did a hell of a lot of charitable work.

First 'proper' Bond to die although without checking I think the oldest.

I think it has to do with For Your Eyes Only being the first one I ever saw in a movie theater (Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me I saw on tv). And that Sean Connery had stopped making Bond films shortly after I was born, so growing up I had never associated him with the role in the way that I had Moore. Plus, For Your Eyes Only has Carole Bouquet, who is stunningly gorgeous. The opening...that was the one with the remote-controlled helicopter and dropping the guy down the large chimney, right? If so...yeah, THAT was a bit hokey. But it also had all those great ski slope stunts, plus the gags involving the shark. AND it had a young, voluptuous Lynn-Holly Johnson. I even liked the next one, Octopussy, quite a bit, too!

Honestly, I'd be least likely to watch the Bond stuff out of anything Connery did. I'd sooner watch Outland (which is a GREAT fuckin' movie, IMO).

    Is Lazenby still alive?

Haven't seen Outland in forever but I know I saw it in the theater.

I think Moonraker was the first Bond I saw in the theater. Most of the others (as mentioned) on TV.

I thought Brosnan was okay, but obviously a bit late. He was tied up doing Remington Steele.

To me Roger Moore will remain as the classiest actor ever.

I've never cared about James Bond in general, either with him or Connery. I recently heard Moore was the first choice for Bond but was said "too handsome" for the role, then Sean Connery was called.

I'll always prefer his French voice rather than his own though.

Meh. Brosnan WAS okay, but that's about all he was. By the time he started playing the role, he was a bit too long in the tooth...and it must be said Brosnan has never exuded an aura of toughness. A little too old and a little too unconvincing in the fight scenes. When Craig took over from Brosnan, [Craig] brought back some of that brute masculinity that the series needed, and I think the Craig films rebooted the series and produced a level of quality not seen since the late 1970s with Moore.

    Dalton was totally forgettable.

I didn't know Charles Bronson had played Bond. j/k

Actually, Bronson might have made a good Bond! That understated, minimalist menace he brought to the rest of his films would have been amusing to watch within the context of a Bond movie where gadgets and stunts are exploding all around him...

Or did you mean Bronson Pinchot? Did he star in the 'James Bond: Cousin Larry, Don't Be Ridiculous!' series?

Very much so. He claims by now he has fucked most of the Bond girls. Not at the time of course but through doing 40 years of conventions with them.

The story goes that FYEO was made 'darker' in the same way as later Casino Royale was because Roger Moore had already handed in his notice that he was too old so the movie was going to be a new Bond. As it turned out he was persuaded to stay and he ended up doing another 3 with mixed results.

There is a good argument to be made that usually the first Bond movie an actor makes is his best ignoring Connery that is OHMSS, Live And Let Die, Living Daylights, Golden Eye and Casino Royale. I'm not sure why that happens, maybe they made more of an effort on the scripts under the pressure of selling a new Bond...

I don't agree with the "mildly effeminate maitre d's" comment but funny as fuck and kudos to you! I think Brosnan may not have been the tough-guy Bond but was instead the asymmetric killer type you don't quite expect making him a bit plausible...

If you actually read the novels, Craig is by far the closest to the actual literary Bond. A bit of a macho self-hating hard drinker with a conscience, that didn't just fucking drink shaken martinis...

Moore was my favorite Bond. Think I only saw one with Brosnan. Haven't seen any since.

I prefer Matt Helm over Bond.

My favorite Brosnan moment was in a movie called Taffin where he delivers a line in a crazy way.

This was noticed by a couple of DJs (one of whom Joe Cornish went on to become a director) and it all went a bit viral.

If you actually read the novels, Craig is by far the closest to the actual literary Bond. A bit of a macho self-hating hard drinker with a conscience, that didn't just fucking drink shaken martinis...
To be sure, the Craig approach to the character is probably the closest out of all the filmic Bonds as to how Fleming actually wrote Bond in terms of personality type. At least that's the impression I got from watching the Craig films.

I've just never been able to buy into Brosnan as being tough...or macho. Perhaps my fag waiter characterization was a BIT hyperbolic, but there's just nothing menacing or intimidating about Brosnan to me whenever I've watched him onscreen...in anything.

I don't know why, Sesh, but those various Brosnan living here remixes literally have me laughing until I'm crying.

I think I'll take the 10 minute one and use it for my alarm clock.

LOL I remember Brosnan as "Remington Steele" as sort of a dandy detective more into wits than fisticuffs though I never watched more than 10 minutes of it and thought this guy never should do Bond. I did like most of his movies though, but the Jonathon Price media mogul villain one sucked...

I think it was the beginning of novel From Russia With Love that James was sitting in a Mexico City bar swilling tequila and cheap beer all the while thinking that he'd become a cheap assassin whore rather than the special investigator action man he'd always fancied himself after killing a heroin cartel leader....

    LOVE the pic!!

Jill Ireland could have been the Bond Femme Fatale in every Bronson Bond flick.

Maybe Bronson's Bondian catch phrase could have been something suitably subtle...like, when Bronson Bond is about to execute an enemy, he aims his gun at him and asks (a la Death Wish 2): "Do you believe in Jesus? Well, you're gonna meet him," then pulls the trigger.

In the end, "Death Wish" and the Bond films are pretty close actually. The Bond ones are just more sophisticated...

Fuck, Mannix, a recently discovered classic I've started watching on the local TV Land affiliate sets the standard for dumb macho shenanigans for educated white guys....

The first Death Wish movie, I think, is a well-made flick that manages to be fairly thoughtful in terms of addressing the concerns people in urban areas circa 1976 had about street crime. Perhaps thoughtful isn't quite the word, but the first Death Wish managed to be not...shall we say...an immersion in Grindhouse exploitation.

The second Death Wish was just a nasty bit of business. No real pretentions toward touching upon ongoing concerns of urban crime other than a few passing remarks in the script. The movie just unapologetically and voyeuristically wallowed in prolonged rape scenes and wanton violence. Which is to say, I quite enjoyed the movie.

My favorite, however, is Death Wish 3, which is just so beyond the pale...surely just as nasty in terms of the sexualized violence, but ridiculously over-the-top cartoonish in terms of scale (a characteristic not uncommon to virtually every Cannon film during their prolific 1980s run of flicks). I mean, at one point Kersey blows this Bronx street hood out of a window...with a bazooka! And this follows a 15 minute automatic gun battle in the streets of the Bronx...I mean, as bad as the Bronx was, it still wasn't downtown Aleppo! Whereas Death Wish 2 was a pretty grisly, joyless viewing experience, Death Wish 3 comes off to me as almost a black comedy because it's so silly and outlandish in terms of anything approaching reality.

The rest of the Death Wish series following 3 was a case of steadily diminishing returns. I mean, Bronson aged out of the role long before he stopped making the sequels (even with DW3 he was pushing the age envelope). However, I'd actually say the first Death Wish movie was probably (for me) a better film than ANY of the Bond movies.

There certainly something to be said for macho tough guy tv and movie roles up to and including the late 1980s. The newer generations of tv and movie tough guys always seem to be more concerned with looking fit and posing than actually just being tough. Or, like along the lines of...say...Bruce Willis, one can't buy into the pushy posturing.
