Def Leppard Prep Remastered 'Hysteria' for 30th Anniversary Box Set

Reissue of multi-platinum 1987 LP will include 5-CD/2-DVD Super Deluxe Edition with B-sides, extended versions and alternate mixes

Def Leppard will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their best-selling LP, 1987's Hysteria, with a remastered box set out August 4th via Universal.

The reissue will be available in multiple formats: the 1-CD "Vanilla" version, a 3-CD Deluxe version, a 2-LP set on black vinyl, a 2-LP "Direct to Consumer" version on limited-edition colored vinyl and a massive, 5-CD/2-DVD Super Deluxe Edition ($100!).

The Deluxe edition includes a slew of additional rare tracks, including B-sides, radio edits, extended versions, alternate mixes and a BBC Radio "Classic Albums" documentary on Hysteria.

The Super Deluxe Edition also includes four books (Story Of, a Ross Halfin photo book, vintage tour program and poster). The two additional CDs include an audio version of the band's 1989 concert film, Live: In the Round, In Your Face, recorded during the U.S. Hysteria tour. The two DVDs feature a series of promotional videos and live performance clips, along with the "Classic Albums" doc.

Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott enthused about the reissue to Rolling Stone, calling Hysteria "that mammoth of projects."

"During our 40-year career, we've been blessed to have experienced some incredible highs, work with some amazing people and enjoy success beyond our wildest dreams," he said. "The Hysteria album was a labour of love, of that there is no doubt. But we've always believed you get what you give, and the longevity of the album is testimony to our sold belief in ourselves and the music."

Hysteria, the British band's fourth LP, followed their 1983 breakthrough, Pyromania. The group worked with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange on Hysteria over three years, enduring numerous delays – including drummer Rick Allen's December 1984 car crash that resulted in a lost arm. The album spawned seven hit singles – including "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Photograph" and "Love Bites" – and sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

Def Leppard released their self-titled 11th album in 2015. The quintet is currently touring in North America with Poison and Tesla.

I've got the Live In The Round In Your Face dvd already so CDs 4 and 5 are useless to me (the audio by itself isn't particularly compelling, and truth be told Def Leppard have NEVER been an astonishing live band: not terrible, but nothing exceptional), as well as the promo videos (I don't need videos of them miming on Top Of The Pops), so I have no use for DVD 1.

Plus, now that I think of it, I already bought The Deluxe Edition of Hysteria in 2006 to replace my then 19 year old cassette tape, and that 2006 version already has the remastered version of the original album, plus most of the stuff on CDs 2 and 3 of this new version. AND, to be frank, I listened to that 2006 version once when I bought it in 2006, and it has been collecting dust for the last 11 years.

I mean, I suppose if one is a massive fan of the band, this new 30th Anniversary edition IS pretty jam packed with stuff...but $100? Fuck me, how much money do even the most ardent Def Leppard fans want to keep shelling out for the same material? I think these continual reissued versions of various albums only have appeal to diehard fans with OCD, who simply HAVE to have EVERYTHING a given band releases.

I think I've seen them about 3 or 4 times over the years, last time we walked out bored after about 5 songs.

Maybe this is actually a backhanded compliment but one of the problems with their gigs is it's difficult not to be super suspicious about exactly how live their live shows actually are...

They never touched anything in me. I've seen their very first one armed concert on the monsters of rock show back then and was impressed that they pulled it off.

I like Hysteria and the Pyromania/High and Dry eras of Def. But fucked if I'll pay $100 for this...

I saw them last in...2006? 2007? 2008? Somewhere in there. Journey opened up for them. Prior to that, I had last seen them on the Hysteria tour roughly twenty years before.

Leppard weren't anything astounding live. Not in 2006-2008, and not really back in the 1980s the first time I saw them, either. Granted, they have a catalog with roughly a dozen well known songs that even a casual rock fan of a certain age who never bought a Leppard record would know via radio and MTV airplay. So they easily have 45 minutes of material right there that is virtually guaranteed to be known by the entire crowd these days.

Allen's kit was pretty much all electronic, so that makes them sound a bit cheesy right off the bat: no substitute for acoustic drums. The backing vocals the last time I saw them were a bit TOO flawless and multi-voiced, even when only Savage and Elliot were singing the choruses, so that led me to believe there was definitely some piping in of (at the very least) backing vocal tracks during the show. There were also several points where I could hear too many guitar parts in the mix going on at once to have been played by just Collen and Campbell, so there may well have been some instrumental tracks piped in as well.

The problem is so many other bands do this now that it's a bit churlish to merely single out Leppard for this.

They were just a bit too perfect and almost over-rehearsed for my liking, if that makes any sense. They tried so hard to make what they were doing sound like the records, and outside of Joe Elliot's voice (which was pretty knackered) they basically achieved that. Some people like that, I suppose, but for me if a band is trying to 100% replicate every single thing on their records down to the note - with no spontaneity whatsoever - then fuck it: I'll stay home and listen to the record, you know?
