The sun heats the earth, not the air. The sun shines through the atmosphere and warms the planet. The planet then warms the air. This is why it's warmest at the surface, and gets colder as altitude increases.

The atmosphere is only around 0.039% CO2. According to their biased results, it may have increased by 0.004%. That's not enough to make a difference.

If you are a scientist, and are being funded by GOVERNMENT studies... and want to CONTINUE to get funded, you give them the results they want. That's why there are so many biased results. Unfortunately, our world is driven more by politics than it is science.

70's - The new ice age. 80's - Acid rain. 90's - Ozone depletion. 2000's - Global warming. Then they had to change it to climate change because global warming was such an obvious lie. That’s 40 years of being completely wrong in the name of fear-mongering for power and money.

On one side you have science across the whole world on the other groups funded by people like the Koch brothers to spread bullshit to protect their interests in the fossil fuel industry. For some reason you and a bunch of other Americans have decided to believe the later..

Choosing to believe it doesn't change the facts.

Just the facts, sesh? global warming predicted as early 1975.

    http://www.slate.com/articles/techno...niers_use.html

“The central fact is that, after three quarters of a century of extraordinarily mild conditions, the Earth seems to be cooling down. Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the cooling trend, as well as over its specific impact on local weather conditions. But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century.” —Newsweek: April 28, 1975

The dated leftists had us all preparing for the end of the world from the coming ice age. Now it's global warming.

    the world is round again...

But we did have acid rain in the 80s and the hole in the ozone happened. Both things were greatly helped because the world took action they didn't pretend that it was fake news because of what some big business lobbyists said.

Not to mention that Newsweek's prediction was written at a time when Environmental regulations were just beginning to take a positive effect, and was no doubt projected upon that basis. They couldn't have predicted that a bunch of greedy fucks would take power and be mindless enough to actually UNDO the very protections that had begun to clean up the planet. Ironically enough, it was the BCE/Nixon administration which put such reforms into existence in the first place. But then, Tricky Dick wasn't using the oil industry as cover for his CIA dark ops like Poppy Bush was, so he didn't owe them as many favors.

"The world took action". Ha ha ha ha ha!

You're like the little loudmouthed dog that yaps all the time, and acts like he's going to tear someone apart, but is actually scared of his own shadow. You skirt wearing fuckers are a pimple on a gnats ass. You try to bark really loud to convince someone (mostly yourselves) of your relevance. Well, other than a shitty golf tournament, you guys have no relevance. You couldn't affect a fucking thing in the world. Positively or negatively.

By the way. There was no pretending it was fake news. It WAS fake news. Read what I wrote on the third line down. Congrats on buying into the bullshit Sesh. You keep believing the REAL NEWS from the good politicians!

Look at what your fifty years of foreign policy has brought you post WW2. You're seriously proud of that? By any measure, a complete clusterfuck. Here in oz, even 16 yo McDonald's workers make $18 an hour. Hopefully the cannabis trade will make you an economic superpower again, and you won't need to spend so much money on arms.

NASA: HOLE IN EARTH'S OZONE LAYER FINALLY CLOSING UP BECAUSE HUMANS DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT

BY SYDNEY PEREIRA ON 1/5/18 AT 11:53 AM

The shrinking hole in the ozone layer has become something of a success story among all the damages humans have inflicted upon the Earth. A new NASA study based on data from the Aura satellite confirms the success, so far, through measuring the chemicals that caused the hole in the first place.

The study, published Thursday in Geophysical Research Letters, reveals that a decline in ozone-depleting chemicals has resulted in 20 percent less depletion since 2005. Specifically chlorine levels declined by 0.8 percent each year between 2005 and 2016.

“We see very clearly that chlorine from [chlorofluorocarbons] is going down in the ozone hole, and that less ozone depletion is occurring because of it,” Susan Strahan, lead author and atmospheric scientist from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a statement.

The chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) Strahan referred to are ozone-depleting chemicals that were once used in aerosol sprays, blowing agents for foams and packing materials, and refrigerants. Chlorine causes ozone depletion as the sun’s ultraviolet radiation breaks down the CFCs into chlorine.

The hole in the ozone layer was first discovered in the 1980s. This layer of the atmosphere protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation, which can cause skin cancer and cataracts, suppress immune systems and harm plants. Just two years after the hole was discovered, the world jumped quickly to solve the problem. Several nations signed the Montreal Protocol, which would ultimately ban CFCs, the chemicals responsible for destroying the ozone. Fast-forward decades later, and the ozone hole was measured at the smallest since 1988, NASA announced last November.

Strahan’s study is the first to look directly at measurements of chemicals to argue that the shrinking hole stems from the ban of CFCs. Using data since 2005 from the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite, scientists gathered information on the amount of hydrochloric acid in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is located. Hydrochloric acid is a chemical that forms once chlorine has destroyed the ozone itself.

Measuring hydrochloric acid, which forms when chlorine reacts with methane, allowed researchers to accurately estimate chlorine levels. Comparing hydrochloric acid levels with nitrous oxide levels—another gas that remains in the atmosphere—they determined chlorine’s decline of 0.8 percent per year.

“This is very close to what our model predicts we should see for this amount of chlorine decline,” Strahan said. “This gives us confidence that the decrease in ozone depletion through mid-September shown by [Microwave Limb Sounder] data is due to the declining levels of chlorine coming from CFCs.” The microwave technology specifically also allowed researchers to study gases during Antarctica’s dark winters, as most satellites require sunlight to measure gases.

Winter in Antarctica is the key time to measure ozone loss, according to Strahan. Temperatures are colder and more stable during July to mid-September, allowing for more accurate measurements of ozone levels, which can vary depending on temperatures and chemical levels. The researchers' findings based on chemical data closely matched what their model predicts.

A recovering ozone layer provides an example of the changes that are possible if humans take action, researchers say. Last November, some 15,000 scientists signed a letter describing how to save humanity, concluding with a positive note on what people have accomplished. "The rapid decline in ozone-depleting substances shows that we can make positive change when we act decisively," they wrote.

Scientists at NASA said they had located the largest ozone hole ever recorded, in a report released October 3, 2000. The Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said satellites had observed an 11.5 million-square-mile hole. The area is approximately three times the size of the U.S.

“As far as the ozone hole being gone, we’re looking at 2060 or 2080,” Douglass said in a statement. “And even then there might still be a small hole.”

A complete horseshit assertion. If "liberal welfare systems" caused homelessness, then why to the more liberal welfare democracies not have the extensive and pervasive problem with homelessness that we have?

-Lack of universal health care to deal with mental illness and the opiod drug addiction crisis

-The constant cutting of social programs of an already "threadbare welfare state" while cutting taxes for the super-wealthy

Neither of those are "liberal positions"...

We should round them all up and send them to Scotland. I bet you guys can fix them, and get them to work!
    Well, I'm all for that!

London's homelessness count continues to rise

However you cut the numbers, the capital’s struggle to house its vulnerable people is getting harder

Newham stresses that its similar problems are “exacerbated by the government’s welfare reforms which have restricted the number of properties available to families on low incomes”. It says a not-for-profit housing organisation it set up in 2006 provides some temporary accommodation. Across town, the story from Ealing Council is much the same: “The numbers of families presenting to the council as homeless is increasing year on year and, like many councils, we are struggling to find accommodation for them.” They are developing small pockets of their own land and building their own modular homes as an alternative to housing people in expensive, temporary private accommodation locally.

It’s 50 years since Shelter was founded.

Trump's Keebler Elf Klansman Attorney General is trying to kill that off too. From my cold dead hands, as Charlton Heston used to say

That's complete bullshit. Countries that have proper welfare systems don't have that because they have welfare systems fucking duh.

Instead you have military socialism. You still pay the same tax but instead of it going to look after people that can't look after themselves it goes on completely pointless defence spending welfare because that way the contractors can wet the beak of the politicians.

Also you fundamentally don't get the way the world is going. The Mexicans or whoever aren't taking your jobs, technology is and you need to get used to it. How many jobs are going when the self driving cars come? There are 2 choices going forward, continue to the Blade Runner dystopia with a few people at the top with all the money or have a universal income for all. The third option being revolution because in time even if you don't realize you are being pissed on, young people will.

Well, since you like Newsweek, here's a more recent article (today)...

The Ocean Floor Is Sinking Under The Water Weight From Melting Glaciers, And It’s As Bad As It Sounds

Newsweek Dana Dovey,Newsweek 8 hours ago

So much extra water is being added into the world’s oceans from melting glaciers that the ocean floor is sinking underneath its increasing weight. This ocean floor deformation also means we have miscalculated just how much ocean levels are rising and the problem could be far worse than previously believed.

Over the past 20 years, ocean basins have sunk an average of 0.004 inches per year. This means that the ocean is 0.08 inches deeper than it was two decades ago. While this small fragment of an inch may not seem much, oceans cover 70 percent of our planet, making the problem bigger than it seems at an initial glance.

In a study published online in Geophysical Research Levels, researchers explain how they used a mathematical equation known as the elastic sea level equation to more accurately measure the ocean floor. This allowed them to see how much the bottom of the ocean floor has changed from 1993 to 2014. While they are not the first scientists to look at the ocean floor, this is the first time that researchers have taken into account how additional water from melted ice may have further stretched the ocean floor, LiveScience reported.

The results show that the ocean is changing in ways that we previously did not realize and is sinking further into the earth’s crust. As a result, scientists have underestimated how much sea levels are rising by as much as 8 percent. The study concludes by emphasizing that future sea level measurement should take ocean floor deformation into account in order to more accurately understand how our oceans are changing.

All the water on the planet today is all the water that has ever existed on the planet, but not all water is in its liquid form. Recently, rising temperatures have caused much of the frozen water on the planet’s glaciers to melt and join the ocean as liquid. This mass melting ice rising sea levels, a problem whose consequences we’re already starting to see. The first to notice the repercussions of rising sea levels are those who live in coastal areas. Rising waters mean less land to live on. In addition, more water in the ocean means that ocean storms, such as hurricanes, have the potential to be stronger and more devastating, National Geographic reported.

Small coastal areas won’t be the only ones to disappear due to rising waters and if current estimates are correct, by 2100 the ocean will rise between 11 and 38 inches, a number that could mean that much of the U.S. east coast will be covered in water, National Geographic reported.

It is being revitalized. I'm not on the fucking chamber of commerce or anything and I have my complaints. But Millennials are moving here and there is a lot of redevelopment going on due to the increase in tech, medical, and educational fields.

I just don't want too many aholes like Jerksmar moving here after their state goes underwater after being wiped out by a hurricane then flooded by melting ice caps!

The science of climate change has been predicting for decades that weather patterns (both hot and cold) would become more extreme while the overall temperature of the planet continues to increase.

    Yup.
"The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the international body for assessing
the science related to climate change. The IPCC was set up in 1988 by the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to provide policymakers
with regular assessments of the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and
options for adaptation and mitigation. "
Global warming didn't become climate change in the way the fossil fuel lobby groups say in your fake news feed - it was called Climate Change 30 years ago.

Let's see. The article says the ocean floor is sinking due to the weight of more water being added but then it says we are going to flood the coastlines due to more water. Kind of a contradiction. None of the predictions have come true. So let's admit the scientists miscalculated. Push the same sky is falling hysteria and interestingly enough solving the problem is trading carbon credits to China. In short. This is a land grab scheme. A few rich people will end up owning agricultural land and other assets. The world's biggest polluter China will be exempt. Bigger profit margins for the big corporations in bed with the PRC and less for the average person in the west. See global warming only is a problem in the industrialized west. Not a problem in China where there are real pollution problems. This is all about grabbing as much land as you can and using the cheapest labor you can and controlling the population.

First-ever detailed estimate from geological drilling shows U.S. capital faces half-foot drop by 2100

    07-28-2015
    By Joshua E. Brown

New research confirms that the land under the Chesapeake Bay is sinking rapidly and projects that Washington, D.C., could drop by six or more inches in the next century—adding to the problems of sea-level rise.

This falling land will exacerbate the flooding that the nation’s capital faces from rising ocean waters due to a warming climate and melting ice sheets—accelerating the threat to the region’s monuments, roads, wildlife refuges, and military installations.
