On reflection ADKOT was better than it had any right to be under the circumstances.

The intro Dave asked him to film.
I think it's actually pretty good.Comment

Then again, the older Roth got, the more sort of lamely strange he got. Sort of less cool than odd, and one tends to laugh more at him than with him these days when he lays out his shtick. Like his B-B-Que vid, or his persona during the Sam and Dave tour, where he's still wearing spandex and has that series of blonde hair weaves stapled to his head.
At least with the first reunion tour in 2007, Roth toned down all that stuff (onstage at least, backstage midget rider requests notwithstanding) down, and was the better for it. I guess his type of rock frontman persona was never destined to age well.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

I think so. Point of fact, for all the weaknesses of it (1/2 old reworked demos, 1/2 of the new material not particularly strong), when one considers Ed's own output post-1996 - as well as Roth's - ADKOT ended up being much better than I thought the band were capable of by the time 2012 rolled around.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Mike no longer was welcome because hanging with Sam turned him gay and he was trying to fuck everyone at 5150 including Ed's dog up the ass.No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

Resurfacing it today, is kinda like finding an empty beer bottle under the couch from a party a decade ago. It's just a mindless walk to the recycle bin or trash can and on with life..."If you want to be a monk... you gotta cook a lot of rice...”Comment

I'll preface my comments by assuming that the guy is legit and at a minimum is honestly talking about his interpretation of what he witnessed. Given the history between Ed and Dave (and Al and Dave for that matter), it seems strange to me that Ed's reaction to the suggestion to bring Dave in for rehearsals was basically "yeah, whatever". Al had nothing to say about that? Or was it Ed grudgingly accepting the fact that really had no other options relative to VH? Why then? He'd had no problem pissing his life away since at least around the time of Cherone's departure, so I don't completely get it.
He also states that it looked like a strictly business arrangement- Dave came in and rehearsed with little interaction then left. The implication being that there was basically nothing there from a personal standpoint. All I can say about that is that I watched a lot of the vids from that tour and that's not the impression I got. The guys interacted positively and seemed to be enjoying themselves. There didn't seem to be any going through the motions or "god i can't wait to get off this stage with Roth" type vibes. And bottom line, I enjoyed that tour. Dave was in great form and while I don't think Ed was quite at the 12/15 levels of playing, I don't have any complaints about this playing.Comment

I seem to recall Ed doing a telephone interview on Stern in 2006, just after it was confirmed Wolfgang was to be the new bass player, and Ed also had a whatever attitude about Roth rejoining on the phone. Then again, in 2006, Ed looked to be in pretty dreadful shape so little in terms of erratic behavior should be surprising.
It came off to me that Roth and the Van Halens enjoyed playing with each other on the first reunion tour. I have no real idea what it was like offstage, but I get the feeling that Roth and Eddie can tolerate one another offstage for only so long, and apparently it was that way going as far back as the early 1980s. That it wouldn't be surprising that Roth and Eddie don't share dressing rooms and don't see much of one another when they're offstage or not working. Roth and Ed never gave off a vibe of being a couple of guys who were best buds and hung out together much anyway. But I didn't get a sense on that first reunion tour that Roth and Eddie weren't enjoying playing together again.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Yeah, I seem to recall that sounding like an Ed that didn’t care whether they actually got it together or not. Indirectly saying, “get up here and sing, bitch” to Dave, through a phoned in Stern interview didn’t sound a whole lot like he was looking forward to getting together with an old pal to give creating magic another try.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment

Exactly. The tone he conveyed to Stern at the time was one of it seemingly not making a difference to [Eddie] if it was Roth or anyone else singing...and I think Eddie also said something along the lines in the same interview of Roth not being the only singer in the world who could front the band by that point in 2006.No! Ed's ex wife Valerie said Ed was ready to retire from the road and the only thing that would get him out was playing with Wolfgang. I think Wolfgang wanted Roth and that being the case Ed and Al went along with it. So people got the reunion they finally wanted with Roth back. Ed played well and Roth gave it his all (age is taking it's toll). Everyone did their best and overall not a bad tour.
I'd agree 100% that the prime motivator for Ed undertaking the activity he has since 2006 is the enjoyment he gets from playing with his kid. Ed sure as shit wasn't going to reunite the CVH lineup in order to make Roth or Mike Anthony (or the fanbase) happy.Scramby eggs and bacon.Comment
