Reaffirms some of what I thought/guessed back then, which is that Wolfgang was the one among the Van Halens who initiated bringing Roth back into the band and that Ed was basically playing because he enjoyed playing with Wolfgang...that had it all been left up to Eddie and Wolfgang wasn't brought into the band, a Roth reunion wouldn't have necessarily happened when it did. I think Wolfgang was a positive choice, despite how freak-show he looked onstage during that first Roth Reunion tour, in that it facilitated getting Roth back and probably helped get Ed in a frame of mind to attempt to get sober and active.

Although I think the band would have gotten back with Dave eventually, Wolfgang or not, if Ed and Al wanted to play in arenas again. After the Cherone stint and the 2004 tour, no promoter was going to pay substantial guarantees for a Van Halen that didn't have Dave in it.

    Probably .

    True enough.

Ed likes playing music with his kid.

And his kid was aware enough that getting Dave back in the band was the only realistic move the group had left in 2006, and - more importantly - the one person Ed would actually listen to.

In the end, it wasn't a bad thing. His enjoyment of playing with his kid got Ed out of his downward spiral, got him out of his bunker mentality and got him back on the road. Not too far-fetched to say it probably added some years on to his life Ed might not have had left to his own devices and inclinations.

Yeah, but by the time his kid joined the band, it had been more than readily apparent for ages that Ed had no interest in doing what the world wanted from him.

Isn't it funny. For years we were starving for news like that. And now they hardly blow the dust out of the Main Forum.

Yeah, because from 1999-2006, outside of the 2004 tour there was little other than silence from the group. Only made sense during that time frame that many of us here would have had a great deal of interest in behind the scenes stuff.

Now, after the band having reunited for a decade - and the result of said reunion being average to good at best - who is really all that excited to hear the inside skinny on what the Van Halens and Roth were up to in 2006?

But it was still interesting to listen to, and brief enough that you didn't have to sift through some amateur 4 hour Van Halen fan podcast to get to the story.

To be fair though... the dust was blown out of Main™ 11 years ago here with all that news.

Resurfacing it today, is kinda like finding an empty beer bottle under the couch from a party a decade ago. It's just a mindless walk to the recycle bin or trash can and on with life...

    Oh, to be sure.

1996 was a blown opportunity at having a 2nd chance that went beyond a couple of tracks for a greatest hits release. That year was really the best chance the band had at reuniting when they were still relatively young enough and still had some creative juice left in the tank.

The decade after 1996 wasn't a good one for Ed, and it was ten years of wasted time for a band that really didn't have time to waste in terms of a reunion being something other than what it ended up being.

Dave nearly cancelled the tour because he couldn't get 20 'midgets' at every venue?

Sort of sadly weird that by the time 2007 rolled around Roth was still acting like it was the 1980s, with such tour rider requests.

Then again, the older Roth got, the more sort of lamely strange he got. Sort of less cool than odd, and one tends to laugh more at him than with him these days when he lays out his shtick. Like his B-B-Que vid, or his persona during the Sam and Dave tour, where he's still wearing spandex and has that series of blonde hair weaves stapled to his head.

At least with the first reunion tour in 2007, Roth toned down all that stuff (onstage at least, backstage midget rider requests notwithstanding) down, and was the better for it. I guess his type of rock frontman persona was never destined to age well.

I think so. Point of fact, for all the weaknesses of it (1/2 old reworked demos, 1/2 of the new material not particularly strong), when one considers Ed's own output post-1996 - as well as Roth's - ADKOT ended up being much better than I thought the band were capable of by the time 2012 rolled around.

Mike no longer was welcome because hanging with Sam turned him gay and he was trying to fuck everyone at 5150 including Ed's dog up the ass.

I'll preface my comments by assuming that the guy is legit and at a minimum is honestly talking about his interpretation of what he witnessed. Given the history between Ed and Dave (and Al and Dave for that matter), it seems strange to me that Ed's reaction to the suggestion to bring Dave in for rehearsals was basically "yeah, whatever". Al had nothing to say about that? Or was it Ed grudgingly accepting the fact that really had no other options relative to VH? Why then? He'd had no problem pissing his life away since at least around the time of Cherone's departure, so I don't completely get it.

He also states that it looked like a strictly business arrangement- Dave came in and rehearsed with little interaction then left. The implication being that there was basically nothing there from a personal standpoint. All I can say about that is that I watched a lot of the vids from that tour and that's not the impression I got. The guys interacted positively and seemed to be enjoying themselves. There didn't seem to be any going through the motions or "god i can't wait to get off this stage with Roth" type vibes. And bottom line, I enjoyed that tour. Dave was in great form and while I don't think Ed was quite at the 12/15 levels of playing, I don't have any complaints about this playing.

I seem to recall Ed doing a telephone interview on Stern in 2006, just after it was confirmed Wolfgang was to be the new bass player, and Ed also had a whatever attitude about Roth rejoining on the phone. Then again, in 2006, Ed looked to be in pretty dreadful shape so little in terms of erratic behavior should be surprising.

It came off to me that Roth and the Van Halens enjoyed playing with each other on the first reunion tour. I have no real idea what it was like offstage, but I get the feeling that Roth and Eddie can tolerate one another offstage for only so long, and apparently it was that way going as far back as the early 1980s. That it wouldn't be surprising that Roth and Eddie don't share dressing rooms and don't see much of one another when they're offstage or not working. Roth and Ed never gave off a vibe of being a couple of guys who were best buds and hung out together much anyway. But I didn't get a sense on that first reunion tour that Roth and Eddie weren't enjoying playing together again.

Yeah, I seem to recall that sounding like an Ed that didn’t care whether they actually got it together or not. Indirectly saying, “get up here and sing, bitch” to Dave, through a phoned in Stern interview didn’t sound a whole lot like he was looking forward to getting together with an old pal to give creating magic another try.

Exactly. The tone he conveyed to Stern at the time was one of it seemingly not making a difference to [Eddie] if it was Roth or anyone else singing...and I think Eddie also said something along the lines in the same interview of Roth not being the only singer in the world who could front the band by that point in 2006.

Ed's ex wife Valerie said Ed was ready to retire from the road and the only thing that would get him out was playing with Wolfgang. I think Wolfgang wanted Roth and that being the case Ed and Al went along with it. So people got the reunion they finally wanted with Roth back. Ed played well and Roth gave it his all (age is taking it's toll). Everyone did their best and overall not a bad tour.

Ed played well and Roth gave it his all (age is taking it's toll). Everyone did their best and overall not a bad tour.
They did about as well as could have been expected considering their age and - in the case of some members - lengthy periods of self-inflicted abuse.

I'd agree 100% that the prime motivator for Ed undertaking the activity he has since 2006 is the enjoyment he gets from playing with his kid. Ed sure as shit wasn't going to reunite the CVH lineup in order to make Roth or Mike Anthony (or the fanbase) happy.

It's fortunate that Wolfgang sparked the motivation in his dad and uncle to reunite with Roth and produce an album with a couple tours!!

If the kid is smart though... he'd get those 3 old farts off the couch and produce some more music and do some shows now!! Sitting around jacking off, playing games and wanking on a solo album isn't going to finance his future in any significant way. It isn't cheap living in million dollar homes in Southern California even if they are paid for...

Wolf may have some residual income from the Van Halen musical empire but royalties are shrinking fast with no resurgence expected. There's might be a little residual income to be mined in the vaults but still that market is shrinking as each day/year passes.

The kid would do well to milk all he can out of what's left in Van Halen while all the members still live and can do something other than piss themselves. 10 years from now Wolfgang is gonna need some income to live. He better earn what he can and invest wisely. The prospect of getting a real job should scare the hell out of him...

Yeah, but you're assuming Wolfgang would have the rationale of someone else who didn't have as privileged a life. Wolfgang hasn't wanted for anything in his life money-wise since the day he was born. The first professional band he worked with was Van Halen. Neither of which is a slam against his character, but he's gonna get Ed's money when Ed passes away: I doubt Wolfgang is staying awake at night wondering if he's gonna be okay financially. He wouldn't know HOW to worry about money. That fear of being poor is totally alien to his entire life experience.

Yup. Lot's of kids like that. One is running North Korea now. Wolfgang probably will live well until the money runs out but he might die of heart disease before that happens. Wolfie and Kim. Two fat fuck rich kids.

A 3 generation burden including his own as a bass player weighs on Wolfgang Van Halen's shoulders. Now he’s an independent artist with his upcoming solo record he will make more than a few bucks.

Plus a 2 generation burden of alcoholism on one side and mad sporadic amounts of eating cakes on the other.

It's kind of like when you are in a relationship with someone who sucks your cock every day.

After awhile, you can't imagine NOT having your cock sucked every day...until one day you wake up, suckless and heartbroken.

Next is when your dog mistakes your dick for a snack.

A risk you could take with some women. Never have a fat girl give you a blow job.

I cringe to think of what Ed pays in property tax for his estate off of Coldwater. Lot's of rich kids living off of trust funds. It's a different world than most people live in. Some go to college and even graduate but that doesn't mean they are doing anything important. Many do artsy fartsy stuff to deal with their boredom. Doesn't bother me. Better than being a highly motivated SOB out to be the next David Rockefeller. I would rather have the rich waxing their carrot all day than scheming in think tanks and elite groups how to screw me over.
