The truth of the open southern border is people want the votes on the Democrat side and the Republicans want the cheap labor. Border security tends to not be all that important to those in the congress who live in a bubble. It tends to be more important to the average citizen. When Trump was pitching his wall I figured it was his way of saying security. I don't think he really meant he was going to build a wall across the southwest border. There are plenty of options to secure a border and with today's technology more than ever. Defending the border is a national security issue and I really don't care if the military budget is used to do it. It's a better use of the money than securing resources for some corporate interests in Africa.

Not really. What most Americans want is the laws to be enforced across the board. Nobody has been doing that for a long time and it's created problems. I don't think we will be throwing Mexicans in concentration camps anytime soon. Hell Trump wouldn't be able to keep his hotels clean without them.

Which I agree with, in that Trump went way beyond the pale in terms of hyperbole in the 2016 campaign. He did so, I think, in part because he legitimately believes in the sentiments he voiced, and in part because he knows a lot of other Americans like to demonize illegal immigrants - particularly Mexicans - and point to them as one of the main sources of their woes and ills. And these anti-Mexican sentiments are by no means a new thing: I've been hearing them since the early 1980s.
I'd also agree with Nitro that there are other means of enforcing security on our southern border than actually building a wall, from reinforcing parts of the existing border fences that are inadequate to using drones to using military personnel to patrol the border.
Wrongheaded as he may be about the means, Trump at least has the fortitude to try and do something about securing the southern border.
I'm all for immigration. In the proper, legal manner. For me, that would include vetting pertaining toward any criminal record equivalent to a felony in our country. Such a record would be a disqualification for entry. I'd imagine such a procedure exists already. Deportations increased under Obama. I'm for deportations in as humane a manner as possible. Yes, there are a lot of heartbreaking stories regarding children who were born here from parents who weren't legal residents. In some cases, though, these parents have been here for DECADES and haven't become legal citizens yet: how long does it take? And remaining illegal doesn't benefit them when it comes time to retire and they can't collect their social security. Nor does it benefit the work force by keeping wages low. Nor does it send the right message to the immigrants who came here through legal channels and/or made the effort and became legalized citizens once here.
I understand the need for political asylum in cases of extreme humanitarian crisis. However, it seems to me that we have MORE than enough legal citizens in this country and resources are stretched thin already. At some point, something concrete needs to happen. Sadly, maybe these ICE raids and deportations are what it takes to send the message that lax immigration enforcement is a thing of the past.
Yet I express these ideas, and automatically I'm tagged as a racist because I'm not for automatically giving every person who enters the country illegally and stays here illegally a pass in terms of applying the law.

Proper border security just comes down to hiring qualified people who use their brains. The northern border between Washington State and BC is a simple ditch between a pair of two lane roads, and we don't have any terrorists coming across it.
The last one who tried actually wasn't even jumping the ditch - he was taking the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, and got busted by a border guard doing a routine inspection. He was planning on lighting up the Space Needle and possibly a few other places on the West Coast with his own brand of "fireworks", so no question he was a legitimate threat. But he was stopped by conventional and constitutional (pre "Patriot Act" as this was in 1999) law enforcement methods. And I have every confidence that the same well trained people, using the same methods, could stop the next asshole who tried to make it over the border. In fact, if Cheeto tried to replace that ditch with an ugly wall, I'd blow the goddamn thing up myself.
I see CBP a few times a month during the summer here in our little burg by the lake. They stop at all the marinas. The Coast Guard station isn't too far and our sheriff's department has a boat but they're out there looking for drunks and not terrorists.

One thing you can do is kill the incentive. Prosecute those who hire illegal aliens harshly and do the same to drug dealers. Hell you could put them to work on a border wall in 120 degree Arizona heat as punishment.
Punishing those who hire the illegal aliens is certainly a good start. Hell, even St. Ronald of Jellybean, the Republican Messiah himself knew that much....
As for the drug dealers... time to do away with the phony "war on drugs" in this country, fully legalize weed nationally and decriminalize everything else, and destroy the "demand" for drugs being smuggled in.

Don't underestimate the power of the largest banks. Both HSBC and Wells Fargo have been caught laundering money for the drug cartels. Nothing has happened to anyone or any of those institutions. Remember most governments borrow money from the central bank which are privately owned. Below this level everyone is a sheep. The world works mostly on bribes and after that, blackmail. Say hello intelligence agencies. Probably the largest drug runners there are. The politicians are just babbling idiots.
