And for proof of that, all you need to do is listen to the demo version of the song produced by Gene Simmons - and presumably using Chaim's own equipment (or possibly Ace Frehley's??) instead of Eddie's own stuff.

While it's a decent rendition for the most part, the guitar just don't sound right.....

What makes this song great: production. Full harmony on vocals, meter, guitar tone, microphones, studio.

What makes this song so great?

    David Lee Roth, Rockstar.

Definitely lacks the raspy Brown Sound® and the resulting complexity and soul...

The Gene Simmons demo was recorded in NYC and Ed did not have his own equipment. He either played through Ace's or Paul's stuff which I assume was a Gibson guitar through a Marshall. Ed in the day would play a Les Paul or a Ibanez Destroyer when his whammy bar equipped guitars were out of tune. So Ed was playing basically a Gibson PAF hum bucker through a cranked single volume Marshall on stage and he also used an old Fender Bandmaster and a Fender Deluxe for practice amps. He had the Deluxe in a flight case and used that in the tuning room backstage. Part of what gave Ed his sound was cranking up an old single volume 100 watt Marshall Super Lead amp but running the amp at 80 volts on a Variac. If you did that will Ed's Marshall you got that sound. Also Ted Templeman and Don Landee used a plate reverb and an eco chamber at Sunset Sound and the recording and mixing process has a lot to do with that sound too.

So without the variac and maybe that particular Marshall Ed used and a different studio and sound engineer it's going to sound different.

Another VH song breakdown by Beato. Interesting to hear everything isolated - including keyboards.
    Your welcome.
