Roth Whips Ozzy in Coke Binge

A story from the 1978 VH tour with Black Sabbath surfaced where it appears Dave engaged in a friendly cocaine snorting competition with Ozzy Osbourne which resulted in Ozzy coming up missing and a tour date in Nashville got postponed...

The night before the tour stopped in Nashville, Tennessee, Roth and Ozzy decided to stay up until nine in the morning doing blow to see which one of them would faceplant first. Score one for DLR for having the balls to challenge Ozzy to a competition involving drugs without dying in the process. Somehow, both Roth and Osbourne made it to the airport, got to Nashville, and checked into their hotel. Later on when it came time to head off to sound check, Ozzy didn’t show up.

Dave wrote about this in his book "Crazy From the Heat". Dave and Ozzy called their coke binging episodes Krell Wars. Well Ozzy looked at the room number on a hotel key he had in his pocket and when he got there a maid was finishing cleaning the room. The key was from one of the hotels he stayed at a few days before. Ozzy told her to get the hell out and plopped on a bed and fell asleep for a few hours. Nobody could find him. After a mad search, calling the police, and canceling a show Ozzy shows up in the lobby.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

I cannot tell you how many peeps I have met here who have told me that story because they got to see Van Halen do an extra long set the night Ozzy turned up missing.

This is why I'm glad your generation is starting to die off. What a bunch of imbeciles.

Although to be fair, in 1978 Ozzy had already been binging in a big time rock star manner for several years - and was several years older than Dave - whereas Roth then was just getting to really indulge in a big league way.

Ozzy off key as ever but are the guitar and bass a bit out of tune as well? If only we had ELVIS still posting to check...

Yeah, Iommi's guitar sounds out of tune and probably doesn't have the intonation set correctly which is typical when bar and power chords just don't sound harmonized properly at those gain/distortion levels.

Looks like Ozzy's F A T gut is in tune.

Yeah, because THAT's what this site needs...more ELVIS.

Actually, I kind of liked ELVIS...then again, I am a masochist...where's Katydid when you need her?

This place needs a better class of troll.

Well you know what they say. It's only rock and roll and it's really not supposed to be all that good. Haha! If it sounds off take another toot and have another swig and that might fix it.

Maybe the video tape mastering was slightly off. If anybody remembers the original issue of the "Live At Last" album, the whole band practically sounded like chipmunks, Ozzy especially. And it wasn't all the coke....

It wasn't a tape timing issue... I'd suspect just tuning and intonation. Those Gibson SG's from that era were crap, especially the necks and head-stocks were really unstable, susceptible to warping and very sensitive to climate (temperature/humidity) changes. They used some fairly soft woods and Gibson quality control was terrible. I've played several freshly tuned and they wouldn't hold a tuning worth a shit for long.

You probably could break one up with your bare hands but a good SG sounds great and it's fun to wiggle the neck back and forth to change the pitch. Nothing has changed. Gibson quality control still is terrible.

Haha! Iomie's roadie probably was wasted while changing the strings and dropped the bridge when he cut the strings loose. He probably installed the bridge backwards. That's why the intonation is off.
