More VH talk from Eddie Trunk

Original lineup? Stadium package tour? Yankee Stadium, as DLR hinted in one of the recent interviews?

I'm not buying into this whole thing just yet, but it would be good news if true. If previous experience is any indication, both the 2007 reunion news and the 2012 album news moved from "rumors" to "confirmed reality" over the Holiday season. So if anything really IS going to happen in 2019, I would expect news soon, and from somebody more reliable than Eddie Trunk.

Should I ask if MelodiCrock is reporting on it yet?

Opening acts: Chickenshit. Extreme. Great White (now featuring that Mitch Malloy guy who was in VH for 5 minutes in 1996).

Just bullshitting, obviously. But that would be a three ring circus.

Trunk is just mirroring what Dave vaguely eluded to in the recent interview... something original and Yankee stadium. More than we had last week in music news...

Possibly, but I would be interested in knowing who the (shall remain) nameless "industry insider" he alludes too is. Sammy? I haven't paid much attention to Trunk but thought he and Sam were slap-and-tickle buddies...

I cuntsidered not posting the video, because I really don't like Trunk but I figured someone else would have posted it anyway.

The more I think about this it sounds like Trunk is just latching onto anything and throwing shit on the wall and seeing if it sticks. I'm sure he'll say "I told you so" even if Mike ain't invited...

Perhaps Trunk has found out something tangible about Van Halen's activities in 2019 a few months in advance of the rest of us.

Would sort of stand to reason after two decades or whatever as a radio/tv show host specializing in hard rock and heavy metal, with all the people in the industry he has met, that Trunk would be in a position to know such information...okay. So?

I guess it could mean something, although for me yet another tour with the same Van Halen lineup that has been performing since 2007 isn't particularly newsworthy, but more of the same.

Meh reliable sources aren't reliable with Van Halen.

The biggest indicator is Dave's hints as they are not usually as vague when he is just trying to not say anything.

I did not know Bassplayer's tech, Kevin Dugan, grew up just outside of Cleveland. Checked his FB page and he hasn't posted in a while.

If it is a package tour, with VH and Wolfgang's band, who else is on the bill? Tremonti? No way VH has someone on the bill that could potentially blow them off the stage. See KWS, the Marley kid, and Kool and the Gang.

I could take Trunk or leave him even though he has stated quite strongly that not much comes close to those original VH records with Dave. If there is a tour with Mike I will be there.

Dave riffing on a possible stadium date with a multi bill including Metallica and Foo Fighters, or Guns and Roses...Van Halen with Wolfgang simply doesn't have the current drawing power those bands do. In point of fact, if such a quadruple bill were to take place, if anything I'd assume Van Wolfgang would be closer to the bottom of the bill than the top.

Simply put, Van Wolfgang 2019 isn't selling out 50,000 seat venues in the US on the strength of the Van Halen name alone. I'd have doubts that even CVH 2019 would be packing stadiums on the strength of THAT name alone without a fairly popular name band on the bill with them. 15 to 20,000 seat amphitheater and arenas wouldn't be too hard for Van Halen to sell out, but stadiums? Only if it was the CVH lineup and only if it was announced as a farewell tour. If it's just another Wolfgang Greatest Hits tour, I don't see stadium-sized capacities selling out.

Yeah, but Trunk has also said - more than once - that while he agrees that the CVH 6-pack records were the best material the band has come up with, [Trunk] still prefers the band with Sammy Hagar in that he thinks the band improved when Roth left. A bizarre rationale that makes no sense.

Van Wolfgang couldn't sell out 25,000 seaters the last time out, even with Groupon's help!

Monsters Of Rock II? Would Metallica accept a mid-lineup spot? I can't find a link to Azoff's roster, other than something about the creation of Full Stop Management and that he manages the Eagles, Journey, Bon Jovi, and Steely Dan along with newer acts Travis Scott and the One Direction kid. They'll have to go outside Full Stop to fill the bill.

Wolfgang opens so he's got time to re-fill Ed's vape pen during the VH set...

Van Halen was doing 12 to 15,000 seaters in 2015. The venues were reasonably filled, although I did notice that ticket prices - in my area, anyway - were quite a bit lower than they had been in 2008 and 2012.

Were I Metallica, Guns And Roses or Foo Fighters, I wouldn't accept a lower billing than Van Halen. Guns And Roses was filling 60,000 + venues without the aid of a package tour lineup last time out. I'd have to imagine Metallica and Foos could still pack such venues on the strength of their names alone. Van Halen can't.

Even back in the CVH days, the band wasn't headlining stadiums in the US. They played some stadium gigs opening up for the Stones, and headlined Heavy Metal Day at the US Fest, and opened up...what was it...the California Jam in 1978. There's a difference in playing stadium gigs under those circumstances vs. filling them on the strength of their name alone. Even Van Hagar headlining with the Monsters Of Rock stadium tour did so with several name bands on the bill, and even THEN those shows had attendance problems.

I agree that any "big" tour with 20K+ butts in seats for Van Halen is going to have to be a multi-artist tour. Van Halen in any format with current, past or new band members just won't have the draw for anything in large venues on their own...

Stand-alone headliners... their best bet would be Casinos and county fair circuit gigs at this phase...

A double bill with Van Halen opening for AC\DC or even Aerosmith would be great...That will never happen because AC\DC doesn`t need VH to attract a stadium crowd...still one can dream.

Isn't Aerosmith doing their farewell tour?

I wouldn't want to sit through an Aerosmith set to get to VH.

I wouldn't either, although were that hypothetical an Aerosmith Farewell tour with Van Wolfgang for a business as usual jaunt, I 'spect Van Halen would be opening for Aerosmith.

I dunno if Van Halen - the current Van Halen w/ Roth - is QUITE at the small theater / state expo level just yet, though they don't have too long to go.

Yeah, I think it's getting closer to the smaller end for them. They could probably do well in large cities (NY, LA, Chicago, Vegas) but outside of that I think they'd struggle to fill good sized arenas on their own.

Well, that would depend on if AC/DC even tours, or what they're calling a band if and when that happens. Suposedly the long running "Back in Black" lineup of the band is back together in the studio, assembling an album from tracks that Angus & Malcolm recorded several years back before Malcolm's brain stopped working correctly. But Brian Johnson singng in the studio is different from him singing live, as far as his medical issues goes. And Cliff WIlliams supposedly retired, so he might not want to tour again. Angus had the previous tour booked before he lost half the band, so if he had to book another tour with some other psuedo-band like AxlDc was he might not be able to get a stadium deal himself.

As far as Aerosmith goes..... I'm only interested in seeing them if they don't play anything they recorded after 1985 or so.

VH will need to open for a bigger act if they want to do any stadium...at this point in their career they could open for Taylor Swift lol, other than this I cannot even see them filling the arenas as in 2007 and 2012 by themselves. It will take a marketing genius to have them on a bigger scale than a 2015 like summer tour.

I think part of the problem is that Van Halen is now bumping up against what KISS eventually encountered after multiple reunion tours, in that after 3 of them in the last decade, most people who have wanted to see Van Halen with Roth have done so: the idea of Roth with Van Halen is no longer special or unique.

The other part of the problem, sad to say, is that - at least as far as the media coverage goes - from 2012 onward Dave's declining abilities have been commented on with increasing frequency.

I could see the current version doing venues around 10,000 seats next year with the current lineup without much of a problem. Any ambitions beyond that, short of a package tour it will be the CVH lineup that makes the next tour special.

KISS wasn't even stupid enough to think they could fill stadiums on their farewell tour.

I see the KISS shows are starting at 7:30 pm but haven't seen word of openers.

I dunno. When was Aerosmith's last collection of originals? Say what you want about ADKOT but at least VH didn't hire flavor of the month to co-write.

I doubt Aerosmith could fill a stadium on their own at this point.

I'd tend to think Aerosmith couldn't fill a stadium on the sole draw of their band name, either. Even if they announced a farewell tour.

I've never really thought of Aerosmith as a stadium act, anyway: I know they've played stadium gigs, but - again - it's one thing for Aerosmith to headline the Texas Jam going on at the end of the day after a half dozen other name bands have played.

Sweet! Another trip to the "Van Halen is doing something!!!" rumor mill! This seems appropriate at this juncture-

And yet, here I am offering my (unsolicited) opinion on the matter! As has been said, I don't see them doing stadium gigs by themselves. I don't think they could have pulled that one off even in the peak of the original Roth era let alone now. And if it is part of some multi band deal, I can't really think of any bands that I have any interest in seeing, either because I don't care to see them or I've seen them before. I don't think even a CVH reunion would be enough to pull me in to some sort of multi band stadium monstrosity.

I always figured if they did anything again, with or without Mike, they'd do a summer shed/amphitheater circuit with Wolf opening the shows. If they brought Mike back and I was convinced that Dave could get what's left of his vocal cords in to some semblance of '07-'08 shape, I'd probably be willing to drag my ass to the nearest shed to see the show.

Guess I better start planning now as Van Halen rumors always end up being true!

I agree that even in the blazing trail (that ultimately hit the wall) of 1984, Van Halen couldn't fill a stadium on their own. I think two more big albums with Roth, then maybe...

Hmmm appears the consensus is that none of the major bands from the CVH era can support a stadium tour on their own... Sad affair... but Rock just hasn't had the draw that pop and country can pull in.
