Bernie Sanders set to announce 2020 presidential run

Bernie Sanders set to announce 2020 presidential run

    White House Correspondent
    1/25/19

WASHINGTON—Three years after fighting a surprisingly competitive Democratic primary race against Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is making another run for the White House.

Two sources with direct knowledge of his plans told Yahoo News that Sanders, an independent and self-described “democratic socialist,” plans to announce his presidential bid imminently. While Sanders has been mulling a bid for months, one of the sources said he was emboldened by early polls of the race that have consistently showed him as one of the top candidates in a crowded Democratic primary field. In particular, the source said Sanders was heartened to see numbers indicating he is one of the leading candidates among African American and Latino voters, two groups he was perceived as struggling with in 2016.

The source also alluded to a spate of recent polls that show Sanders as the most popular politician in the country. They attributed Sanders’ strength in the polls to the base and name recognition he built with the prior presidential bid.

“What the senator has this time that he didn’t have last time is he is the most popular elected official in the country right now,” the source said. “That’s light years away from 2016 when very few people knew who he was.”

A third source said Sanders’ bid will begin with an exploratory committee. Sanders’ campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.

In addition to these two sources, a former Sanders staffer who was not been briefed on the imminent announcement plans nevertheless said they were aware of many recent signs he is set to pull the trigger on a presidential campaign. Specifically, the former staffer said Sanders has been building out the infrastructure he would need for a White House bid.

“He’s already talking to staff and there are people he’s hiring. They’re nailing down contracts with vendors, … all the movement is there for him to run,” the ex-staffer said.

Though Sanders ultimately was defeated by Clinton last time around, his upstart campaign reshaped the Democratic Party. Sanders ran on a progressive platform that included a focus on eliminating income inequality, campaign finance reform and an ambitious “Medicare For All” healthcare. Those principles have become centerpieces of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and several Sanders-backed candidates won elections last year.

But Sanders’ impact on the Democratic Party went beyond his political vision. The primary battle between Sanders and Clinton was contentious, with Sanders allies claiming Clinton’s campaign worked in conjunction with the Democratic Party establishment to prevent a Sanders victory. These battles cemented divisions in this party that linger on as the 2020 election approaches.

Following President Trump’s victory over Clinton in 2016, Sanders and his allies pressed for reforms to the Democratic National Committee that would make the party’s primary process more open and inclusive to what Sanders termed “the working people and young people of our country.”

Amid Sanders’ reform push, the DNC assembled a “unity commission” to recommend changes that included members chosen by both Sanders and Clinton. Ultimately, the DNC made rules changes that included one of the main items on Sanders’ agenda, curbing the role of unelected superdelegates in choosing the party’s presidential nominee. At the same time, the DNC also adopted a rules change that would make it more difficult for independents like Sanders to seek the party’s presidential nomination.

In spite of this, Sanders’ allies felt he was unaffected by this new rule because the Vermont Democratic Party passed a resolution last year recognizing him as a full member. A source who discussed Sanders’ 2020 plans with Yahoo News confirmed he will be running as a Democrat.

Though he will be entering an extremely crowded Democratic field, Sanders is starting from a formidable position. Early polls of the race have consistently showed Sanders as one of the top candidates, likely due to the base of support he established in 2016. Sanders allies also believe his prior run could give him a head start organizing in key early primary states. Last October, Pete D’Alessandro, who was Sanders’s Iowa state coordinator for the 2016 race, told Yahoo News he was confident the senator would be able to build on the grassroots support and infrastructure he established in 2016 if he made another run.

“This was a movement. It still is a movement,” D’Alessandro said.

I don't know who this other guy "Steve" is in this video, but I hope they don't have him back again, because he comes off like a bit of a DLC douchebag here.

The lesson of 2014, 2016, and 2018 is that Corporatist Fake "Democrats" are NOT electable. Bill Clinton only got there by splitting the vote three ways. Barry Obama only got there by campagining convincingly as somebody that (as it turns out) he never really was. Nobody's going to buy that bullshit from Mini-Me Gillibrand, Scamala Harris, Borey Crooker, MBNA Joe, or any other phony the DLC puts in the clown car.

Poll after poll after poll in 2016 said that Bernie would have BURIED the Orange Imbecile. And Bernie's name recognition has only improved since then. Issue after issue, the majority of the population sides with Bernie. There's no point in settling for an inferior candidate who will lose as bad or worse than Hillary did.

I agree. Except for when it comes to guns. Guns should always be free. I mean, fuck healthcare, social safety nets, education or a general better quality of life. If America has free-as-fuck guns we wouldn't have to worry about all that shit. America is all about GUNS. And guns should be free. If only they had FREE guns.

LOL wat? You get what you pay for and I'd rather not see Dr's who are cheap and unmotivated. I also don't want to drive on substandard bridges.

Substandard bridges is what you have NOW. Because there hasn't been any significant infrastructure built in the US since 1980. Which is not coincidentally the last time the rich paid anything remotely reasonable in tax rates. Eisenhower knew what he was doing when he kept the marginal tax rate at 91% and used the money to build the interstate highway system, NASA, etc.

As far as the "cheap doctors" go, nobody that I'm aware of in the US is calling for a complete "socialized medicine" system, where the doctors are government employees. Though such a system DOES exist, in the VA hospitals. Which were considered to be a solid effecient system until the Republicans stopped funding it properly. Single payer Medicare for All would only take for profit insurance out of the equation. Not the doctors or the hospitals. While the motivations of some doctors and medical institutions can certainly be called into question, at least they provide something of value to the health care system. All the insurance companies do is skim money off the top, to build some billonaire's mansions, and far too often, deny medical treatment to somebody who really needs it, or deny payment for somebody who's already had neccessary expensive treatment.

So no, you don't really "get what you pay for". Unless the CEO of United Health Care is lending you his private jet over the weekend. And I doubt that's the case.

They can be motivated by helping people and their salary. Motivating Dr's directly with cash is a bad idea as it leads to over treatment and people getting procedures they don't need.

This country has been fucked up since November 1980. And severely fucked up since December 12, 2000. Electing yet another corporatist piece of shit will not change that.

What more proof does one need that Democrats cannot run proper campaigns? Same old tropes and cliches: the "American heartland" (upon which no politician gives a shit about even if they come from there), extinguishing middle class families, school kids (too young to vote), more vanishing scenery of America and then there is the self-proclaimed "socialist" Jew who just loves the F A T Orange man's fascism by agreeing to an additional $1.7 billion in increased spending for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Oh, and here's another tidbit the Bernie brats refuse to acknowledge: Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the F A T Orange man's stupid wall. They did it under the "Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRAIRA)" which, by the way, gives free reign to the Department of Homeland Security the legal power to construct wall fencing regardless of environmental regulations. Here's the deal: Sanders also voted for the legislation.

    "It's an Armani knock-off, bitches."

So you see you cretins, master Bernie doesn't care about his stupid slaves, he doesn't care about America. master Bernie serves the Wall Street interest in this country only he does it thinking he is under the radar. Both master Bernie and his little girlfriend squeeze Ocasio-Cortez are not radical at all, much less actual socialists. They are corporatist - just like any Rethuglicon. Neither one of them give a shit about you, Neither one of them is really up for the fight to arm the objective working class movement with an uncompromising revolutionary strategy and socialist perspective. Haha! Well Kristy I think you did a good job of describing why people hate politicians and why most people don't even bother to vote. Voting is like trying to decide who's shit you are going to eat.

The Latest: Leahy Backs Sanders in Shift From 2016
    4-5 minutes
WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 30: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) speaks during a press conference at the U.S. Capitol January 30, 2019 in Washington, DC. Sanders and other members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives called for the reintroduction of a resolution “to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen” during the press conference. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential bid (all times local):

    2:30 p.m.

On the first day of his presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders picked up the support of his fellow home-state senator, Democrat Patrick Leahy.

Leahy, who endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary, says he'll back Sanders this year.

In a statement, Leahy said the Democratic field was strong and "Bernie's entry makes the field even stronger." He called Sanders "a proven leader with a strong message."

Also supporting Sanders is Vermont Rep. Peter Welch, who also backed him in 2016.

Sanders is the sixth senator competing in the primary. He joins Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

    __

    Noon

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders raised more than $1 million within hours of launching his 2020 presidential bid.

That's according to a person familiar with the campaign who wasn't authorized to publicly disclose the early numbers and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The numbers were amassed less than four hours after Sanders announced Tuesday morning that he would run again.

Sanders identifies as a democratic socialist and unsuccessfully challenged Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic primary.

Few candidates seeking the 2020 Democratic nomination have voluntarily released early fundraising figures.

California Sen. Kamala (KAH'-mah-lah) Harris reported raising $1.5 million in the 24 hours after she launched her campaign last month. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (KLOH'-buh-shar) reported raising $1 million in the 48 hours after launching her campaign this month.

    10:25 a.m.

President Donald Trump's campaign claims Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders "has already won the debate in the Democrat primary, because every candidate is embracing his brand of socialism."

Sanders, an independent who describes himself as a democratic socialist, announced on Tuesday that he's running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

In a statement, Trump campaign national press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the American people "will reject an agenda of sky-high tax rates, government-run health care and coddling dictators like those in Venezuela."

Sanders embraces proposals ranging from "Medicare for All" to free college tuition. He describes his 2020 White House bid as a "continuation of what we did in 2016." He told CBS "these ideas and many more are now part of the political mainstream."

    ___

    7:20 a.m.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is describing his new White House bid as a "continuation of what we did in 2016."

Sanders notes that policies he advocated for in 2016 are now embraced by the Democratic Party.

Sanders says, "You know what's happened in over three years? All of these ideas and many more are now part of the political mainstream."

Sanders was asked Tuesday on CBS whether he believes the Democratic Party has come his way. He says, "I don't want to say that. Most people would say that."

Sanders announced his 2020 presidential bid earlier Tuesday. The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016.

    ___

    6:45 a.m.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he's running for president in 2020.

The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016 and said on Tuesday that he planned to again seek the nomination.

Sanders has reshaped Democratic politics and earned a loyal following with his passionate defense of liberal proposals including free college tuition and single-payer health care. But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party's base.

Still, Sanders' name recognition, fundraising prowess and passion for liberal policies makes him a top-tier 2020 presidential contender.

Bernie Sanders Hires Top Progressive Advocate, Faiz Shakir, as Campaign Manager
Gideon Resnick, Spencer Ackerman, Sam Stein02.19.19 3:21 PM ET
    4-5 minutes

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has tapped Faiz Shakir to serve as his campaign manager for his second run at the White House, the Daily Beast has learned.

In hiring Shakir, Sanders brings into the fold one of the Democratic Party’s better-travelled operatives—an official with limited campaign experience but with ties to the party’s think tank infrastructure, its Hill operations and the larger progressive universe.

Shakir joins the Sanders operation from the American Civil Liberties Union where he served as national political director since early 2017. Before joining the ACLU, he was a senior adviser to then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and before that he worked with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). He first made a name for himself as an editor at the site ThinkProgress, the news arm associated with, though editorially independent of, the powerhouse Democratic think-tank Center for American Progress.

Shakir held a meeting with his team at the ACLU at noon on Tuesday to announce that he was leaving to join the Sanders campaign, The Daily Beast has learned. His departure is expected to be announced imminently by the civil-liberties giant. At 39 years old, Shakir is almost certainly the first campaign manager of a major presidential campaign who identifies as a Muslim. His candidate, Sanders, is Jewish.

Neither Shakir nor the Sanders campaign returned a request for comment.

A team of Sanders advisers had been in the hunt for a new campaign manager since at least January, at which time the inner circle was dealing with the fallout of allegations of harassment and misconduct from former 2016 staffers. In part due to that fallout, the team was seeking more diversity among their top ranks. A number of names were floated as potential candidates, though Shakir was not among the individuals named by Sanders sources with whom The Daily Beast spoke.

Jeff Weaver, the 2016 campaign manager and a longtime personal friend and ally of Sanders, took on a different role for his second run, likely to become a senior adviser instead.

Tad Devine, a long-time Democratic operative who had worked on Sanders’ Senate campaigns and his 2016 run, is not expected to join the 2020 effort, several sources told The Daily Beast, though his firm is working for Sanders and he himself could potentially help out later in the campaign. Devine, who had a falling out with several campaign aides in 2016 and who has been ensnared in legal drama related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of foreign influence peddling, did not return a request for comment.

Shakir spent several years during the Bush and Obama administrations at ThinkProgress, which quickly established itself as a digitally native information outlet for left-of-center Democrats. ThinkProgress primarily focused on challenging Republicans and conservatives, but also took progressive stances on policy, particularly foreign policy and national security, that challenged the Democratic mainstream. There, Shakir worked closely with Matt Duss, who is now Sanders’ chief Senate foreign-policy adviser.

After a stint advising both Pelosi and Reid, Faiz did informal work for Sanders’ 2016 run. He transited to the ACLU’s Washington office after Trump won the general election. While some ACLU veterans and alums quietly expressed concern about such a prominent role being filled by someone so closely associated with the Democratic Party, the ACLU has become a bastion of legal resistance to the Trump administration on everything from the Muslim-focused travel ban to migrant family separation, and has seen its membership expand off its uncompromising opposition.

In 2016, Shakir was the subject of animus in a leaked email publicized by WikiLeaks in which John Podesta, then the chairman of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, chided Shakir for advising Sanders’ campaign.

I doubt Ms. Obama will run, I think she's sincere when she says she wants none of this. She'd win though...

How quickly the Bernie brats forget their master's hypocrisies, opportunism and overall support for the most venal proponents of American Imperialism.

master Bernie is a political hood ornament whose candidacy serves to distract the shallow political consumer from the fact that it is the engine that makes the car run. That engine is the economic foundation upon which the superstructure of the government rests. That bad smell you get from this engine is called capitalism as it burns up everything in sight. Bernie, who is a true Wall Street Democrat, our latest 'hope for change", is in agreement with this rotten system only wishing to ameliorate it's worst transgressions which is not possible under the current system.

master Bernie has supported America's most heinous war crimes throughout his political career and he has supported the most venal of Democrat candidates over third party candidates.

master Bernie always has and always will prostrate himself before anything else while he throws his entitled little shit suporters under the bus for party politics, joining hands with other unscrupulous, hypocritical party operatives and outright war criminals.

    Fuck him

slave FORD should be banned for his constant posting of Anti-democracy and subversive propaganda.
