Michael Anthony, Gary Cherone, and Sammy Hagar on One Stage

AN HALEN ALUMNI MICHAEL ANTHONY + GARY CHERONE REUNITE ONSTAGE
    PHILIP TRAPPMay 30, 2019

Former Van Halen members Michael Anthony, Gary Cherone and Sammy Hagar reunited onstage in Boston Tuesday (May 28) to deliver a live rendition of Led Zeppelin staple "Rock and Roll." Watch some fan-captured video of the collaborative performance down toward the bottom of this post.
The reunion preceded the May 29 release of the "Affirmation" music video from the Circle, Hagar's act with Anthony, Vic Johnson and Jason Bonham, the son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. The song hails from the Circle's album Space Between, issued earlier this month. You can also see that video below.
Cherone was Van Halen's lead vocalist for a short time surrounding 1998's Van Halen III, when he replaced Hagar in the band. Hagar fronted Van Halen following David Lee Roth's 1985 departure, until he left the Eddie Van Halen-led group in 1996. Cherone, also the singer of Extreme, joined Extreme bassist Pat Badger in attending the Tuesday night gig at the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion, as seen in a photo shared by Hagar.
"Thank you Boston for a great show tonight!," Anthony wrote alongside a portrait of the assembled musicians he posted online the following day. "Great to see my brothers Gary and Pat, love you guys!"
Last year, a Van Halen reunion of the band's classic lineup was rumored to include Anthony, but the bassist quickly quashed the talk. However, Hagar later seemed to confirm the rumors by indicating Van Halen reached out to Anthony about the whispered comeback. Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang Van Halen, has held the bassist position in the iconic glam metal group since their 2007 reunion with Roth.

Technically, Gary Cherone is 1/3 of Van Halen III since Michael Anthony didn't play or sing on that record... according to my sources.

Got an email from the MGM casino the other day. Sammy's Circle Jerk is playing tonight. Mr. I Don't Need The Money, I Tour For The Fans is once again asking over $100 for tickets.

Since Van Halen III was only 1/2 Van Halen or Half Halen©®™ that would make him 1/3 of 1/2 so technically 1/6. I think the humane thing at that point is to round him down to nothing.

Well, I watched the entire clip...

It was a standard, unexceptional version of the tune. I suppose for those who were attending that Circle show, having Cherone jump up onstage would have seemed...neat (?)

A continuation of Jason Bonham's less-than-stellar career in terms of the groups he has chosen to play with: his budding talent was of interest to me in the 1980s and early 1990s, with his stints playing on the Page Outrider album and his own group Bonham. Ultimately, Jason is still very much "the son of John" Bonham, in that he hasn't quite managed to connect with anything that was as compelling as the band his father played for. Granted, how many rock bands reach Zep status? Even so, for me the last nearly 30 years of Bonham's career has been that of drumming for a varied bunch of name acts and musicians where the sole common factor has been that of...just very average output. Not all of that can be laid at Bonham's feet, to be sure, but his post-1991 output has produced virtually nothing memorable to my ears.

As for the Circle, at least they have something of a work ethic, unlike Van Halen Du Jour: if I'm a Circle fan, I know I have a fair shot at seeing them play live in the near future. Is Van Halen even gonna manage to do ANYTHING before one of the Van Halens or Roth croaks?

I wouldn't fuckin' bet on it, though who the fuck knows, right?

All I can say about those guys... musicians out working their trade and making music... it's what they do!

The other guys... amazing musical talent... sitting around at home surrounded by all the best musical instruments and gear in their own private studio. Not a peep. Not a single fucking note heard beyond their back yard. What the hell do you call that..?

A waste... almost dead... I don't know, man...

Of course you have to work hard when you are playing in a circle jerk. Takes plenty of wrist action. Maybe they got Gary to help. Hear his mouth comes in handy when wrists get tired. I hear he tosses salad as well. Sammy is into food. Sam be like, my wrist is tired and I'm old, brig in that salad tosser Gary.

They are studio wankers. They apparently made enough money where they can just stay home and wank. Wolfie better hope his parents don't spend it all. Face it. That kid does have some musical talent but he's fat and nerdy looking and really has no stage presence at all. The kid has no shot at a real self-sustaining musical career and he could have been graduated from college by now. At least Alex's son went to college and apparently did pretty well on the track team while there. At least he's educated and fit and not a blob of blubber dependent on daddy and mommy.

I tend to think that had Ed not chucked Anthony out and put Wolfie in the band, Roth may well have not rejoined when he did. So, for whatever the last dozen years of activity from the band mean to a person, Wolfgang joining the band was part of the catalyst that made the three Roth tours/ADKOT album happen. Ultimately, Ed likes playing with his kid: I tend to doubt Ed would have had quite the same urge to play - at least publicly - if Anthony were still in the group.

As for talent, Wolfgang can play the CVH stuff capably live. I'm under no illusions that Wolfgang is there mostly because he is Ed's kid: Wolfgang (at least from what I have heard) isn't a stellar rock bassist...haven't exactly been bowled over with the original material I have heard, either. Wolfgang is very much "the son of"...I'd agree he has no real shot at a self-sustaining career. He may be able to keep gigging with other notable rock names doing various one-off projects and such.

Drives me crazy when I see parents treating their kids like they are pets and not children. Being a parent means you do everything to help your kid be self-sufficient. That means hopefully they won't return home to live in your basement, they will have a productive life and they will take care of you in your old age. Also having a kid who is so fat they probably have early stages of heart disease before graduating high school. Having a fat kid who never knew what making it on your own means suffering from type 2 diabetes in the guest house ain't cool.

    The whole situation is gay.

Also what kind of reasoning does a drug addict who tries to smash the window of a Gulfstream V jet out with a Smoking Loon bottle have? Too bad Ed didn't smash the window out and decompressed the plane and him and Sammy Hagar get sucked out at 35,000 feet.

Well those lunatics made some good music from 78-84 but they all could pour gasoline on themselves and spark it off with a Zippo now. Nothing coming from them worth your time.

Yeah, well, I didn't particularly want Ed's kid in the band, either.

It had a freak show element to it, particularly for the first Roth reunion tour, where the kid just looked totally out of place onstage.

But the kid being in the band is partly an extension of Ed's "fuck you" stance to the fans which he has taken to one degree or another since Hagar left in 1996, where what Ed wants comes first. I could sort of halfway understand it in 1996, when Ed decided in the end that he didn't want to do a nostalgia tour with Roth and opted to do an album and tour with Cherone. It wasn't what I wanted to see and hear, but Ed felt he needed to move forward. Now, why he couldn't have moved forward by just writing and recording a new album with Roth in 1997, I dunno, since Van Halen III ended up playing a set comprised half of CVH tunes anyway...

Fast-forward to 2007, and it's like, FINALLY Roth gets back together with the band. Ed being Ed, he can't go the extra step and get Anthony back in the band as well, and just flat out give us the CVH reunion we all want: his fuckin' kid has to be in the band, too. But that's where Ed's head has been at since 1996: as a fan of the band, you can either take it or leave it on Eddie's terms. Ed wants to play with his kid, thus his kid has to be in the band, and if you wanna see Ed and Roth play live Ed's kid in the band is part of the package.

As I said, first Roth reunion tour, the kid just looked weird/totally out of place even being there onstage. I couldn't even hear him at the show I saw well enough to even tell if he was playing decently or not. The 2012 show I saw, I could hear him better, and he sounded okay. Both shows, most of the time I forgot he was even onstage, because my attention was focused primarily on what Ed and Dave were doing.

Overall, the Roth reunion turned out to be just okay. Simply put, they all waited far too long to make it happen, frittered away too many years dicking around...it was about as good as one could have expected given their age and decades of self-abuse. However, one always gets the feeling it could have been a WHOLE lot better if they had done it in 1996.

Wolfgang's musical interests got Ed out of his death spiral... brought his Pops back into a good place musically.

That element facilitated the return of Diamond Dave and return of Van Halen, the band, back from obscurity. It resulted in a couple of good tours... an album, with some great music and about a decade of interesting life with my favorite band back in the mix...

Not all of it was perfect but when you net it out, there's far too many notable positives involving these guys than where things were trending back in 2006...

I hope thing don't end here... it's time for another chapter and some more music!

Eddie earned his Kieth Richards Merrit badge. Not a easy badge to earn. Both Keef and Ed can still play well and between the both of them they have kept big tobacco in business.

Can't argue that Ed appeared ready to keel over at any moment in the early to mid 2000s. Hearing how his ability had waned on that 2004 tour, and his general appearance...Ed genuinely enjoys playing with his kid, and without that it's hard to imagine the Roth reunion would have happened.

Overall an uneven reunion, but I'd still like to hear some new music from Ed and Dave. Can't say as I give a toss about another Greatest Hits tour at this point, but a new Van Halen album would be of interest.
