    "guitar'd" documentary

So the guys who made the Zlozower doc had another film in the works called "Guitar'd".
Well guess who is causing a major roadblock to the finishline? Find out below.

"GUITAR`D" - produced, directed, filmed, edited by Declan & Beate Maynes - a documentary still in progress

    GUITAR'D
    - a project in the making -
about GUITAR'D and why it's not finished yet ...
"GUITAR'D" is a big project, which we worked on very hard from 2008 until around 2016.
That's when we met the famous rock photographer Neil Zlozower,
whose photos we gazed at since the early 80ies.

After talking to him for 30 minutes, we decided that we HAD to make a film about him.
And so we did - and finished in 2018.

    You can watch
IN YOUR FACE - THE NEIL ZLOZOWER STORY
    for free on YouTube

We picked up our GUITAR'D doc again, but hit a dead end:

Unfortunately all our attempts to interview EDWARD VAN HALEN,
whose appearance in this film is of the essence, were unsuccessful.

If you think you can help, please get in touch!
So far, we interviewed over 70 guitarists and people in the guitar industry such as:

Ed is a recluse. He’s not an in the public guy. He’s built up quite the brand. EVH is now a major player in the guitar industry. The guy can dicker around in 5150 all day, pop a Viagra pop Janie. Play with their cute little dog and ride his weird looking motorcycle around and the money is coming in. He gives the products his blessing and Fender and Dunlop sell em for him. Ed no longer has to go on tour.

The Van Halen’s retired. They just didn’t announce it.

Jason Becker is "retired". EVH is just being an asshole.

            Meh.

Looking at that list of the others interviewed, I see maybe 5 guitarists total who I'd even put in the same league as Eddie Van Halen in terms of the range of influence they had on rock guitarists over the last 4 decades vs. the range of influence Eddie had: it's not like Eddie's gonna say "Marco Mendoza is being interviewed? Oh, well, in THAT case, I'd better give my two cents also!" No offense to Mendoza, but...

It seems pretty much what Nitro said, in that Eddie doesn't NEED to do jack-shit anymore. His status or legacy in terms of rock guitar legends was already cemented by the time the 1984 album was made. Far as his signature gear goes, one less interview nowadays isn't going to matter one iota in terms of how his gear sells. I mean, Ed can't even give fans the CVH reunion they want, and THAT hasn't stopped his Franky-striped accessories from moving units.

Far as Ed's non-appearance in the proposed documentary goes, if said appearance was so essential to the success of the documentary, one would think the production team would have gotten Ed's co-operation/participation BEFORE interviewing everyone else under the sun. To not have done so, have gone about making the documentary in a half-assed way ASSUMING they'd get Eddie to be interviewed down the line and when that doesn't come to pass blaming EDDIE for their not having done their OWN fucking homework...

I mean, Eddie has made plenty of asshole moves in his life, to be sure. THIS documentary situation, however, isn't one of them.

              It certainly feels that way.

Honestly, when I think about how the band has approached their undertakings since 1995, for them to retire unannounced makes more sense then reuniting with Anthony and going out with a CVH reunion bang. Ties into Van Halen being able to get precious little right in the last 25 years.

I love the EVH speaker cabs. They are cheaper than Marshall’s and loaded with Celestion speakers and built well. I especially like the 2x12 cabs. You can tilt them back like a Fender Twin Reverb amp.

The 5150 amp series is popular from everything from country players in Nashville to metal heads. The price point is reasonable for the quality you are getting. Guitar sales are flat. The younger generations are not so interested in rock and roll. Country is now more popular. The music scene is in Nashville. So I imagine equipment sales aren’t what they were in the 80’s and even 90’s. Kids are different now with the internet, mobile devices and gaming. The teen scene now is kind of lame. For us it was muscle cars. Sneaking into clubs and bars with fake ID’s and chasing chicks. It was all real and in You face for real. It was great. The nerds played the computer games on Friday and a Saturday night.

Don't you think 5 is enough to make this legit? Don't you think if there are FIVE out there in Eddie's league that it would be a hell of a documentary?
They need Zloz to make this happen.

You got that right. Google all of the rock guys living in Nashville now. If you're trying to make a living in music, any genre, you move your ass to Nashville.

So what happened to Dave's "meeting up with the Van Halen's in a few weeks" line he said back in July? (or was it June).

                      Did said meeting take place?

Who knows. Dave is doing his thing on youtube, Ed and Al are nowhere to be seen, Mike is still joined to the bum with Hagar so yeah.....Id say VH is retired.

Yeah...5 guitarists I'd want to hear from, and 65 other interview subjects that hold no interest for me whatsoever...

Don't get me wrong: I'd love to watch an engaging EVH-centric documentary.

Judging from the majority of the 70 person list - along with the amateurish way it was produced in terms of having their shit hard-wired - I'd hazard a guess this documentary isn't it.

I'd forgotten about that "I'm meeting with the Van Halens shortly, we'll have something to announce soon" Rothbabble of last year.

Yeah, Dave, it'll happen any day now...although doubtless you'll understand nobody's breathless with anticipation one way or the other. That's the upshot of working every 4 years or so: who gives a shit anymore? The Van Halens don't want to emerge from their hidey hole. Right up there with DOG BITES MAN in terms of a shocking headline.

Apparently an attempt was made to put something together with Mike Anthony. Not much of one in terms of follow up from what I read, but at least an overture was made.

It's gonna be a bit pathetic watching these guys pushing 70 trying to warble through a set, which is how old they'll be by the time they get around to doing something again. Honestly, I think I'll approach their next endeavor just as I did their 2015 gigs, and watch whatever it is on youtube, because conveniently free is about what I'm willing to shell out in terms of time and money for these guys now.

I'd say I'd still be up for a CVH live dvd box set, but these guys dicked around so long that even dvds are obsolete.

Of which, admittedly, I often forget.

I recall being a bit taken aback at Ed's appearance at the Smithsonian, strictly in terms of how old he looked and how slow and aged his appearance was while being interviewed, and even that was...what? 4 years ago?

That Ed had and probably continues to deal with health issues isn't something many would deny, although the extent of which is unknown at present.

Far as mental issues go, when I think about how fucked up Ed was around 2003 through 2006...I'm no shrink, but it's hard to imagine a person letting their addictions overtake them to the point where they are looking one step from Death's Door like Ed was...I mean, it wasn't a case of Ed not having enough money to address his addiction issues, or finding difficulty taking time off from work to do so: from all appearances, Ed was content to let his health go to shit. To the point where he couldn't even play guitar as well as he used to. Hard to imagine someone with plenty of time and money to take care of themselves and not doing so, and looking content to drink/drug themselves to oblivion without thinking there are some mental issues going on.

Who knows where Ed is at these days, physically, mentally and otherwise. Maybe he's just puttering around, content not to do too much. More than a few days I often think that wouldn't be a bad life, myself.
