Shares in backing tape companies set to go through the roof

Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Poison Set 2020 Stadium Tour

“There is no amount of money that would ever make me do it again because I have such pride in how we’re ending it,” Nikki Sixx said in 2014

    By ANDY GREENE

Mötley Crüe released a video Monday officially announcing their upcoming reunion. In 2020, they’ll be kicking off a U.S. stadium tour with Poison and Def Leppard. While specific dates and venues have yet to be announced, the three acts will perform at stadiums around the country.

The band doesn’t appear in the video, but Machine Gun Kelly, who portrayed Tommy Lee in the movie adaptation of The Dirt, announces that they are blowing up their “cessation of touring contract” because the fans demanded a reformation.

“I never thought I would see the day when this would become a reality,” Kelly says in a press release. “But the fans spoke and Mötley Crüe listened!” The video shows this supposed legal document bursting into flames on a desk.

Mötley Crüe played 158 shows on their 2014-15 Final Tour, wrapping up with a hometown show at the Forum in Los Angeles on December 31st, 2015. Prior to the tour, the band claimed to sign a “cessation of touring agreement,” which they said was a binding document that would prohibit them from ever playing again after the tour ended. At the time, the group’s management failed to produce this alleged document despite repeated requests.

“Legally, we can’t play again,” bassist Nikki Sixx claimed to Rolling Stone backstage at a 2014 show in Denver. “The only loophole is if all four band members agreed to do it, we could override our own contract. But we know that will never happen. There are people in this band who will refuse to ever do it again, and you’re talking to one of them. There is no amount of money that would ever make me do it again because I have such pride in how we’re ending it.”

“If anybody ever — and I don’t believe anybody ever would — would call any other band members and say, ‘Hey, it’s been 10 years, let’s just do 10 shows. A million a pop,’ it could never happen unless all four band members agreed,” Sixx added. “And if we did agree, the way we’ve set it up — including this conversation right now — we’d have so much egg on our face. We have so much pride that that alone would stop it.”

Reports of a possible Mötley Crüe reunion have been circulating the past few weeks, with the official Mötley Crüe Twitter account sharing a fan petition calling for the band to reunite and adding “This is interesting . . .” (The Tweet was later deleted.) Reps for Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, and Poison did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

Def Leppard remain one of the most popular touring acts in rock. They stayed largely out of the U.S. this year with the exception of their Las Vegas residency, where they broke out extreme rarities like “Die Hard the Hunter” from 1983’s Pyromania and “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” from 1992’s Adrenalize. In 2018, they played a highly-successful co-headlining tour of U.S. arenas and stadiums with Journey. Def Leppard were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year.

“We are having an Indian summer and it’s because we have this integrity,” guitarist Phil Collen told Rolling Stone the night of the induction ceremony. “We never stopped, actually, in the 40-odd years that the band’s been together. We just keep going through thick and thin, all the bad stuff, good stuff. And I think that shows, and we’re just enjoying this Indian summer.”

Def Leppard toured with Poison in 2017, which marked the first outing by the Bret Michaels-led band since 2012. In 2011, Poison toured with Mötley Crüe and the New York Dolls. It was the first time the two biggest bands of the hair metal era hit the road together. Unlike nearly every other act from that time, both bands still have all of their original members.

Doing it for the money is very Rock and roll. Rock and roll is about a bunch of misfits and flunkies breaking society’s rules and getting paid wonderfully to do it. It’s not rock and roll being a fat blob of blubber, not singing well, looking old and past the sell date and playing shitty.

I've just been told by someone who knows much more about stuff than me that unlike the other two Poison actually don't use backing tapes.

    I'm going to investigate...

Metal Sludge is reporting that the bands are being paid $150 million for this tour.

They think 45 gigs over 3 months and they estimate $1.75m for MC, $900k for DL and $350k for Poison per show.

Of course no one is forcing anyone to pay their few hundred bucks to go to this but it's hard not to think what a fucking scam.

I’m amazed the promoter thinks people are that dumb but there’s an old used car salesman saying that goes, There is an asshole for every seat.

Poison would be one of those groups I wouldn't castigate for using backing tapes: they've had zero credibility from the get-go, so there's no integrity to lose in their case.

I'd tend to have doubts this trio will be able to fill stadiums, because none of them (far as I can remember) really have before on the strength of their individual groups.

Like, even on Motley Crue's last/'farewell' tour, they were playing amphitheaters and arenas. Leppard has done the same, and the same applies to Poison...and I tend to think that there aren't enough niche fans of any one particular band in that bill to make the difference between arena capacity and stadium capacity: the idea being that anyone disposed to go see Motley Crue would likely be disposed to see Def Leppard anyway.

Plus, I'm assuming each band is going to get at least (in the case of Poison) an hour onstage, and maybe upwards of 90 minutes each for Leppard and Crue. Considering the average age of the concertgoers will be around 50 years old, I'm wondering how many people in that age bracket are going to want to pay a few hundred bucks a pop to go see a (allowing for between set changeovers) 5 hour show featuring those three bands in a stadium setting.

Although to be fair, Vince Neil has always been a shitty live singer. Even back in the 1980s.

    Yeah, he kind of was...

He sounded okay on the Too Fast For Love album.

Sounded like he was doing too much coke when they recorded the Shout At The Devil album. Saw 'em open up for Ozzy in 1984, and he sounded even more coked up live then he did on the album: he just couldn't cut it. And this was when the band was still young.

Tend to think it took a lot of takes and splicing to get the vocals for the albums after that, because virtually any bootleg you listen to on subsequent tours, Vince just sounds knackered and off-key, totally unable to sing a single tune anywhere near the level it was sung on the album.

I suppose it was sort of vaguely 'rock star' cool back in the 1980s for some singers to sound like they were too fucked up to sing well.

And 2020 is the 30th (!?!) anniversary of Flesh And Blood...will Poison play all of it?

I don't want to know what these tickets will cost. Too much is my guess.

I don’t think Vince uses a fork. I think he puts his face into a plate of food and eats like a hungry dog.

Even keeping in mind that these days $20 is a laughably low ticket price for...just about anything...

...honestly, and no sarcasm intended, that's about the high end of what Vince Neil solo would be worth seeing for me...going back 25 years or so, to boot.

I heard some of the Slaughter guys are his backing band but I haven't bothered to verify. Still...Vince doesn't even sing much with Crue, it's always hold out the mic and the crowd does it. No Sixx, no Lee, I can't be bothered.

Which is somewhat irksome when ANY lead singer holds out the mic continually throughout the show prodding the crowd to sing: a few times a show, fine. Anything beyond that...I'm not going to a show to hear how well the CROWD sings, you know? For me, what Lee and Mars did performance-wise on the records was the most interesting part of Motley Crue, even though Sixx wrote a good chunk of the material.

    Maybe.

I'd be quite interested in seeing Steve Stevens play live, but if the context is a Vince Neil solo set circa 2019...the term 'mixed bag' comes to mind.

I'd go see a Billy Idol show with Stevens back in the lineup pretty much without reservation/hesitation. Mostly because I still get enjoyment out of the Rebel Yell and Whiplash Smile material, whereas I'm not particularly interested in seeing Stevens play Vince Neil solo material or Motley Crue songs.

It's nuts and the only thing that makes sense is that The Dirt has raised them back into public consciousness and stadia in the same way The Osbournes did.

Yep. Brilliant marketing. Cuz if the movie was true to the book, it would have shown them out to be the scummy shitheads they really were/are. It glossed over or completely ignored some of the more serious/disturbing stories from the book.

Cheapest seats were $59 plus fees. And there were not many of those. So, the average ticket price has to be ~$150. Raking it in.

Again same as The Osbournes where Sharon had final say on edits which must have involved taking out a lot of her cuntery.

And today I see the Vince Neil show has been canceled.

"Due to what a press release describes as “circumstances beyond the artist’s control,” Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil has cancelled his concert scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, at MGM Northfield Park — Center Stage."

I guess no one wanted the sub-$20 tickets, either.

I see they've added Joan Jett to the bill, and the first two Florida venues on the tour are a Miami stadium gig and an Orlando stadium gig pretty close together date-wise, and both those stadiums hold 65k. Have no idea if they've sold out yet, but I guess it's possible: I'm surprised they sold out the 50k Miller Park gig.

    Big Mac $1.03.

To be fair a Big Mac isn't the worst thing you could have at a fast food place - 540 calories.
