I've grown completely intolerant of the mask debate... It's a real simple situation.

Multiple people indoors... running their mouths... mostly keeping 6 feet (2 meters) apart:

All masked... about a 3% infection rate. Mixed masked about a 6% infection rate. No masks about a 17% infection rate.

Masking doesn't offer significant safety under any scenario. It does offer some reduction in infectious spread when most people wear them. Some is better than none...

It's the most economical and frankly the only preventative widely available globally until vaccines and treatments are developed.

Finally... no body gives a rat's ass what you look like in a mask...

It's a bit disappointing when you realize you don't get ID'd for liquor even when they can only see your eyes...

Work says if we're 9 feet away from others at our workstation we don't have to wear a mask. I put a tape measure down and made sure that the main aisle was far enough away from where I do most of my work. I'll keep the mask in my pocket though.

We've still got restrictions on how many people can be in conference rooms and the break room. Most people are going outside on break.

Stopped at MGM Northfield Park around 2 am this morning. Usual size crowd for that time of night. A lot of the slots have been pulled from the floor, and where there is a row of machines every other machine is out of service. There are a few hand washing stations on the floor as well. Only one restaurant is open, main bar and (of course) the buffet are closed. Masks required for entry.

Our county saw a jump in the last week... went from 1 active positive to 33. Based on contact tracing data it appears the biggest spread event was linked to a church service similar to the initial outbreak we had back in March.

County site is down right now but I think we're up to 17 deaths.

Cleveland's mayor signed an order requiring masks in public spaces. The county executive is expected to do the same this week.

Governor DeWine seems to have dumped the decisions on the cities. The new acting health director is a lawyer and not a doctor, so no one will feel bad giving him a hard time.

The UK locked down too late so was one of the worst in Europe. England compare themselves to the US to make themselves feel better and Scotland compares itself to England for the same reason but its all been a shit show. Locking down even a week earlier would have reduced the deaths by 50%. The other major fuck up was clearing the hospitals of elderly patients to free up beds by sticking them in care homes but without testing them so they took it with them which is how half the deaths happened. So those 2 government mistakes may have cost 30 000 lives. Scale that up by population and that is your own government doing fifty 9-11s on it's own population.

You notice I'm talking past tense which isn't accurate but here in Scotland we are down to a handful of cases and maybe a death a week in a population of 6 million. Scotland has been more cautious coming out of lock down and is just starting to reopen shops and outside bars, The English hit the pubs last weekend so we'll see how that goes, they are still getting pocket outbreaks. Masks are meant to be compulsory on public transport and places where you can't avoid mixing from next week but I don't see many people wearing them here yet maybe 10-20%. I've been pondering that the more expensive the store the more masks you see. I don't think that can be down to the price of masks so that makes you wonder if it's education being older or just having more to lose? Wonder if it's a universal thing across the world or cultural. Could be a good college paper in that for someone...

Things up here in Cascadia were starting to "open up" gradually, but now they're rethinking it. The Washington State Fair in Puyallup is usually the biggest thing in September. Goes on for most of the month. Not this year....

Masks are inexpensive, physical distancing is free...

The real challenge appears to be getting people to make reasonably simple modifications in their behavior to alter the course of this virus outbreak.

This is not some sort of bullshit scam or global political scheme to alter the power structure in the world. It's just a highly contagious viral pathogen that is making people sick and in measurable cases die...

It's mind boggling that we have the history and understand the science of what's happening yet can't make minor changes to save ourselves.

Well... THIS happened at the Fred Meyer a couple miles down the road......

    kiro7.com
Prosecutors: Man told to ‘put on a mask like the rest of us’ pulled gun on Fred Meyer shopper
    KIRO 7 News Staff

TUMWATER, Wash. — Prosecutors in Thurston County say a man who was told to put on a mask inside of a Fred Meyer in Tumwater pulled a gun on a shopper Thursday.

According to prosecutors, the victim told police he was shopping in the produce section when he saw a man not wearing a mask. The victim told police he approached the man and told him to “put a mask on like the rest of us,” prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, the man said he thought the COVID-19 pandemic was a hoax, explained he wasn’t going to wear a mask and told the victim to get away from him.

After arguing, prosecutors said the man pulled his .22-caliber revolver from its holster, pointed it at the victim’s sternum, said “get the f--- away” and threatened to shoot him.

When police arrived at the store, prosecutors said they told the man they needed to disarm him “for everyone’s safety.”

The man said “no” and police took him to the ground, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, the man then attempted to grab his own gun during the struggle and told police, “You’re not getting my gun.” The man continued to fight and even grabbed at the vest of one of the officers in an attempt to bite him, prosecutors said.

Police twice tried to use a stun gun on the man, but the attempts were unsuccessful. Ultimately, prosecutors said it took five officers to take him into custody.

Prosecutors said police spoke to the man’s mother, who was inside the store, about the arrest. When police told her he pointed a gun at the victim, prosecutors said she replied, “Well he did.”

Prosecutors are requesting second-degree assault, third-degree assault and resisting arrest charges.

Two days ago NYS mandated no walk-up bar service and that one could only be served alcohol when ordering food, mainly because to jackoffs in NYC drinking in the streets around clubs while practicing no social distancing whatsoever. I don't like it but can definitely see why they State Health Dept. and Liquor Authority are pissed seeing 50 and 60-something jerkoffs wandering around a local bar like everything was fine..

On the other hand, The Oxford Group along with Astrazeneca have said their COVID-19 vaccine is doing very well in human trials and provides immunity for at least a year and seems to work on most people. But of course more research is needed:

Tough economically on bar owners and restaurants... there's no getting around the statistics that show social drinking indoors leads to high community spread rates.

When will coronavirus cases start going down—and stay down—in your state? The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent global health research center at the University of Washington, put together a running estimate as to when states will reach their peak—in terms of number of infections and hospital beds needed. According to their latest projections, the majority of states have yet to reach their peak for active infections and hospital bed usage. Read on to see what's happening in your state....

Looks like Cascadia is pretty well fucked through December. That's just fucking great. Upside is I shouldn't have to deal with 666 little greedy bastards an hour knocking on my door on Halloween... or a bunch of political operatives knocking on my door right around the same time. Probably a good time to stock up on beer & weed

Back in the car? I don't wait that long.

I clear the automatic doors, and the mask is off.

If that article is even remotely true it's a pity the USA is so insular or more people would realize what a fucking mess has been made of this. It's a spectacular fail. Mind boggling. Every other countrywho got it at the time the US did peaked months ago and that is saying November/December? Europe will get a second wave or swell but looks like the US will get a second wave while still in the first wave.

Same here... if you're outdoors and distancing, no mask is necessary and the risk plummets.

As summer outdoor activity is dropping and schools reopening I'm seeing some drops in our state... but I'm also wondering if we'll see a bounce in the next 4-6 weeks mainly due to spread within schools and the resumption of daily indoor gatherings among kids, faculty and staff.

Shutting down schools back in March/April probably helped reduce the spread significantly and dispersed kids to their homes and smaller density of gatherings.

Flu season always seems to start about a month after the kids go back to school.

Weeks after Sturgis motorcycle rally, first COVID-19 death reported

Weeks after Sturgis motorcycle rally, first COVID-19 death reported
    Wilson Wong

A Minnesota man who rumbled into South Dakota last month with thousands of other bikers for the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally was reported dead Wednesday of COVID-19.

The man, in his 60s with underlying conditions, was hospitalized and in the intensive care unit after returning from Sturgis, the Minnesota Department of Health confirmed in an email to NBC News. The death, initially reported by The Washington Post, is the first traced to the 10-day event that attracted more than 400,000 people and has revved up the coronavirus crisis across the region.

Some 260 cases across 11 states had already been recorded before the first death linked to the Sturgis bash, a sometimes raucous event that ran from Aug. 7 through 16 during which the bars were packed and where there was barely any attempt made at social distancing, let alone wearing masks.

Since then, the number of coronavirus cases have doubled in South Dakota and there has been an uptick in new cases being reported in neighboring North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska as well, the latest NBC News Digital figures show.

“Any time you have a mass gathering of hundreds of thousands of people and then they return to their home states, you’re going to increase the likelihood of a ‘superspreader’ event,” Victor Huber, a biomedical sciences professor at the University of South Dakota, said.

But it’s not just the bikers who appear to be driving the spike in new cases, said Dr. Sadiya Khan, an epidemiologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

“Two thing clearly appear to be driving it,” Khan said. “The motorcycle rally in Sturgis, as well as students returning to college and universities. The timeline seems to support that.”

Khan agreed that the rally appears to have been a “superspreader event.”

“Participants could have taken it home with them,” Khan said. “Or they could have brought it with them there, and passed it on to people who brought it home with them and dispersed it nationally.”

Same goes for the college students who have been coming and going from South Dakota in recent weeks, Khan said.

Before the rally, the infection rate in South Dakota had been “hovering at 8 to 10 percent,” Huber said. “The last couple weeks, it’s been up over 15 percent.”

Huber said he’s also been seeing a spike in cases on the University of South Dakota campus in Vermillion, where students are now required to wear masks upon entering buildings and the cafeteria now only serves takeout meals.

Currently, the school is reporting on its COVID-19 dashboard 229 students with active cases and 637 who are presently in quarantine.

“We’re really starting to see widespread community transmission in South Dakota,” Huber said. “A large part of the economy is tourism, so we have had people coming into the state in greater numbers. We’ve also been returning students to in-person instruction, which is likely to play a factor.”

Earlier this week, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem acknowledged that her state is seeing more active cases than ever before.

“I don’t think any of this is a surprise because for the last several months I’ve told people that we will get more cases, we know for a fact we can’t stop the virus, now we can slow it down and bend our curve, which is what we did, but we were always going to focus on that hospitalization rate,” Noem said at the Sioux Falls Downtown Rotary Club.

Noem did not mention the Sturgis rally, which is a big moneymaker for the state and appears to have drawn even bigger crowds than last year. The South Dakota Department of Revenue reported Tuesday that it has, thus far, collected $1.3 million in taxes from the rally.

"The revenue sum from temporary vendors in the Black Hills is a 6 percent increase compared to 2019," the department reported.

Noem, a Republican and staunch ally of President Donald Trump, also didn’t mention the Fourth of July bash at Mount Rushmore (held July 3) that drew thousands of the president’s supporters and about which she said, explicitly, “We will not be socially distancing.”

“We told those folks that have concerns that they can stay home, but those who want to come and join us, we'll be giving out free face masks, if they choose to wear one,” Noem also said during an interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle."

Since the start of the pandemic, South Dakota has reported a total of 13,749 cases and 167 deaths, North Dakota has recorded 12,004 cases and 149 deaths, Nebraska has logged 34,574 cases and 399 deaths, Minnesota has reported 76,404 cases and 1,872 deaths, and Iowa has tallied 65,480 cases and 1,123 deaths, the latest NBC News figures show.

But a big chunk of that arithmetic has accumulated since Aug. 16, the last day of the rally.

South Dakota has recorded 3,475 new cases and 14 deaths, the NBC News figures show. And there have been 20 deaths and 3,413 new cases in North Dakota, 38 deaths and 4,202 new cases in Nebraska, 120 deaths and 11,206 new cases in Minnesota, and 148 deaths and 13,033 new cases in Iowa.

While this corner of the Midwest in now one of the nation’s COVID-19 hot spots, these states still account for a small percentage of the country's nearly 6.2 million cases and almost 186,00 deaths — both world-leading figures.

All, with the exception of Minnesota, are red states that Trump won in 2016 and aims to win again in November to get re-elected.

Trump has repeatedly praised his administration’s response to the COVID-19 crisis that continues to generate about 40,000 new cases per day and has wrecked the economy. The U.S. now accounts for almost a quarter of the 25.8 million cases and around a fifth of the over 858,000 deaths worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard.

While states in the Northeast such as New York and New Jersey racked up the most cases and deaths back in February and March when the strategy for fighting the virus was still being formulated, states such as Florida, Texas and Arizona that began reopening in May at Trump's urging have seen the most deaths and cases in recent months.

California, a state that took aggressive action early on to deal with the crisis and then saw a big spike when it reopened, leads the nation with 716,881 cases. In recent weeks, however, the number of new cases and hospitalizations have been declining.

    In other developments:

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned Americans on the “TODAY” show to be extra careful during the upcoming Labor Day weekend. “When you have a holiday like Labor Day – we have seen, after Fourth of July, we saw after Memorial Day, a surge in cases,” Fauci said. “Wear a mask. Keep social distancing. Avoid crowds. You can avoid those kind of surges. You don't want to be someone who's propagating the outbreak. You want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.” Fauci has taken flak from Trump and his supporters for frequently contradicting the president’s often rosy reports on the progress of the pandemic. As recently as July, Trump predicted COVID-19 would “just disappear.”

COVID-19 has killed more cops than bullets this year, The Washington Post reported. Using data from the Officer Down Memorial Page, the newspaper concluded that "on-the-job coronavirus infections were responsible for a least 100 officer deaths, more than gun violence, car accidents and all other causes combined." Joe Biden, the Democrat seeking to oust Trump from the White House, said as much this week during a campaign speech in Pittsburgh. “More cops have died from COVID this year than have been killed on patrol,” he said.

The federal Department of Health and Human Services is canceling some of its remaining orders after signing nearly $3 billion in emergency contracts this spring as the COVID-19 crisis was spreading and suddenly ventilators were in short supply. Now it has 120,000 of the lifesaving devices ready for deployment. “By terminating the remainder of deliveries from these contracts, HHS is balancing federal stockpile requirements with commercial market demand for ventilators,” Carol Danko, an agency spokesperson, said. “As a result, HHS is saving the U.S. taxpayer millions of dollars by halting delivery of additional ventilators that are no longer required.” Democrats contend the White House “vastly overspent in its quest to fulfill President Donald Trump’s pledge to make the United States the ‘king of ventilators,’” The Associated Press reported.

Confronted with a spike of cases in her state that appears to be partly the result of young people carousing in bars, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is considering raising the drinking age. Currently it's 21. “We had restrictions, they didn’t abide by that," the governor said. "We put enforcement behind it, we gave them a warning, we set up a fine, we said if it happens again, you’re going to lose your license.” Reynolds, who is a Republican, said she will monitor the numbers over the next two weeks before she makes any move.

Newly-opened colleges and universities continue to be coronavirus hot spots, with numerous outbreaks blamed on students who fail to follow school directives and party without taking proper precautions. Case in point: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign reported more than 400 infections since school started Aug. 24 and have traced most of the cases to big bashes last weekend. The University of Georgia reported 821 positive cases after its first full week of classes. Some 760 students at the University of Kentucky have tested positive and currently the 5,000 or so students who belong to fraternities or sororities are being re-tested. The University of Arkansas has 222 active cases on its COVID-19 dashboard. Miami University in Oxford, Ohio has reported 200 cases since Monday. Some schools have avoided similar crises by making the fall semester fully remote for undergraduates.

When the vaccine comes out, I think I'm going to wait and see what happens to the first group that runs out to get it.

When/if it comes out that won't be the first group - that will be the 4th or 5th group or more.

Trump (like Putin) is going to tell you that the vaccine has come or is just about to come when it suits them to say so politically. That doesn't change the fact you won't get it this year.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is now linked to more than 250,000 cases
    Madison Pauly

The inevitable fallout from last month’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, an annual event that packed nearly 500,000 people into a small town in South Dakota, is becoming clear, and the emerging picture is grim.

According to a new study, which tracked anonymized cellphone data from the rally, over 250,000 coronavirus cases have now been tied to the 10-day event, one of the largest to be held since the start of the pandemic. It drew motorcycle enthusiasts from around the country, many of whom were seen without face coverings inside crowded bars, restaurants, and other indoor establishments.

The explosion in cases, the study from the Germany-based IZA Institute of Labor Economics finds, is expected to reach $12 billion in public health costs.

“The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally represents a situation where many of the ‘worst-case scenarios’ for super-spreading occurred simultaneously,” the researchers wrote, “the event was prolonged, included individuals packed closely together, involved a large out-of-town population, and had low compliance with recommended infection countermeasures such as the use of masks.”

The conclusion, while staggering, is unlikely to surprise to public health officials who warned that proceeding with the rally could be disastrous, particularly given the region’s relaxed attitude towards social distancing guidelines and some of the attendees’ mockery of the pandemic. “Screw COVID. I went to Sturgis,” read one t-shirt from the rally, where overwhelming support for President Trump was the norm.

The study comes on the heels of the first reported death from the event, a Minnesota man in his 60’s who attended the rally who died last week. South Dakota now has one of the country’s highest rates of coronavirus cases.
