Vai took two Marshall’s modded by Jose Arredondo and two modded by Lee Jackson out on the Eat Em and Smile tour. I have a Lee Jackson modded JCM 800 and a 1987 50 watt head modded by Dave Friedman. I actually think my Friedman modded Marshall sounds better than the production Friedman amps. It’s a great amp. The Lee Jackson is a decent amp but kind of a relic from the 1980’s when people wanted an extra tube gain stage and an effects loop added.

Really for the money I like the EVH 5150 III EL34 50 watt head. It’s well built and has a very good clean channel. A Marshall sounding crunch channel and the 5150 high gain channel. You can play all sorts of stuff on that amp. It’s not just balls to the wall but that’s there if you want it.

What’s funny is Eddie said Jose modded his amps but Eddie used a completely stock 68 Super Lead 100. He used a Variac in an attempt to lower the volume of a cranked 100 watt head and it would make sense running the amp into a resistive load and take a line level signal off the load and run the cab with another amp. Maybe Ed was the first person to come up with slaving an amp. It would explain him having several extra amps on stage. One generating the sound and others running cabs basically being used as power amps.

I will admit. I'm a Reverb junkie. I buy stuff. Play around with it and sell it and buy more stuff. it's a never ending cycle.
