I'd tend to think Wolfgang had been jamming with his father and his uncle since the 2004 Van Hagar reunion tour concluded, which is well before the 2006 scenario described in the article.

As to Wolfgang being the motivating force behind getting Roth back into the band in late 2006, that I can believe, in that I tend to think that is what happened. Mostly because of the timing of Wolfgang officially being named Mike Anthony's replacement in 2006 and Roth rejoining shortly after.

All that being said, it wasn't quite as stunning to read how quickly Wolfgang picked up on learning the bass parts to the CVH catalog: not a slam against Michael Anthony, but from a technical standpoint, the vast bulk of CVH's bass stuff isn't all that hard to play. In addition, Wolfgang had been playing guitar for several years already, and it isn't difficult to switch off from playing guitar to playing bass. In the teenaged garage bands I was in, it was invariably the person who was the least capable on guitar who got relegated to playing the bass.

I think you sussed it out Terry. Not first time Jr played with VH bros. just officially.

Curious about reviews for Eruption in the Canyon book by Andrew Bennett. He was video guy that VH (Edward) put kibosh on releasing so I guess 1st person account is next best thing. Sounds like most footage is from down time at Howdy Doody Mtn.

Allegedly the author, Andrew Bennett filmed and photographed this early Wolfgang adventure... this would have been during the tail-end of Ed's Smoking Loon™ era. Not a pretty time if I recall.

It might be interesting to see the film from this... or a fucking train wreck...

And it may well be the case that he was jamming with his father and uncle even before the 2004 tour concluded: didn't Wolfgang play guitar onstage during that 2004 tour with Ed when Ed played...what the fuck was it...that 316 tune from the F*U*C*K* album? And Mike Anthony, from what I remember, didn't play any bass on the new BOBW tracks recorded in early 2004, but just added backing vocals.

And after the aborted 2001 CVH reunion attempt, I'd tend to doubt Mike was hanging out with the brothers much, since he was hanging around with Hagar and playing a few tunes during Hagar's set on the HeavyWeights Of Rock/Sam and Dave tour in 2002, which one can surmise went up the brother's asses sideways.

I remember seeing pics from that "premiere" party at (I think) Ed's house for that porn flick he recorded a couple of tunes for...that was in mid 2006 if I recall correctly...then he made a NAMM appearance in...November or December of 2006...he looked fuckin' dreadful and wasn't playing well. I remember thinking that as much as I wanted to see a Roth reunion, I didn't want to see it if Ed was as fucked up (or worse) as he had been on the 2004 tour. Fortunately, Ed dried up in early 2007...I suspect he relapsed in late 2007, and was battling the relapse and other health problems through the 2008 dates of the tour.

The Heavyweights of Rock tour was a fun show. Roth opened, was on point and ready to compete. It was funny watching the Hagar fans tolerating Roth and looking at their watches as if they didn't know when this was going to be over worried about having to get up early the next day for an important meeting at the office. Ha!
