Collider Top 40 greatest rock bands of all time

I know these lists are click bait but this one was just so random. Can anyone work out the criteria they are using?

The greatest rock bands and singers of all time, ranked

That ranking is random as fuck. As is the idea that the Smashing Pumpkins are somehow better than any of the bands they have listed as "honorable mentions' Except maybe Radiohead.

I do like the fact that they got through the Van Halen portion without a single mention of the Ched Rocker. Far more respectable than the picture of the fake low rent version of "Lynyrd Skynryd" at the top of the article.

    Back to the rankings though....

Beatles #1 - of course. 99% of the lists are going to say that.

Queen #2 - Probably wouldn't be where I would rank them, but I can respect it. (mostly their 70s stuff, of course)

But Fleetwood Mac over the Stones?? That's just complete bullshit, and they know it.

You think it's just like the record collection you might find of a very casual American music fan who grew up in the 1990s and then suddenly Rush appear near the top!

    The Replacements? Weezer?

Really, Pink Floyd is #35 of 40? Yeah, the fucking Smashing Pumpkins and The Replacements are so much more influential and had a record in the Top 100 for decades...

I'd say the Replacements are definitely worthy of the list. Weezer? the only album i ever bought from them was the first one (as far as I know) I've liked a few things I've heard from them otherwise along the way but nothing that's motivated me to buy more of their records.

I have my share of Def Lep LPs and like them but to have them listed above Van Halen or Aerosmith... well, take this list and flush it down the proverbial toilet along with some other WTF moments on the listing

Def Leopard has had maybe three good albums, if that, and they were between 1982-1988. They can't write decent material to save their lives and really have no business on this list, certainly not below #37...

Best Def Leppard album (High & Dry) was from 1981.

Totally agree. That is the best description I have heard of this Lynyrd Skynryd. They have as many members of Blackfoot and The Outlaws as they do original guys.
Also agree on the Fleetwood Mac deal. I am a big fan of Mac once Buckingham came in but compared to the impact of the Rolling Stones....it's a no brainer.

I think this was just someone that wanted to make a list.

    Putting the rankings aside:

Got no use for The Velvet Underground

Got no use for The Replacements

Honestly, not a tremendous amount of use for The Yardbirds: bit telling that the three best-known members went on to do their best work after they left The Yardbirds.

The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer and Foo Fighters wouldn't make my personal 40 list, and the Pumpkins and Weezer probably wouldn't even make it into my personal top 200 list, although Foo Fighters might (though probably closer to 200 than 1).

The rest of the bands on the list, rankings to one side, I can more or less see why they would be included in a general bullshit top bands of all time list...though maybe not so much Santana: Carlos Santana always came off as a bit too much of an Eric Clapton wannabe for my ears, and I'm fairly lukewarm on Eric Clapton to begin with.
