First up, is a cockatoo that has learned the common language and speaking to the natives. The bird has even learned how to use the hiss in the correct scenario. I'm curious if the cats understand, or are wondering why the odd looking white cat has a beak and keeps telling them iced strawberry jeans taste great with West Texas intermediate crude cactus.

I enjoy watching musicians enjoying their music but enjoy it even more seeing two musicians enjoy each other while enjoying their music that I enjoy.

Have you ever crawled down the torpedo tube of a nuclear submarine and wrote your name on the door at the end of the tube? In this video, you can learn about how torpedoes are launched. You can skip to 14:39 if you just want to see the inside of the tube.

Speaking of long cylindrical objects, it's amazing how the SpaceX Falcon rocket boosters return back to earth in the upright position. There's an engineering team somewhere perpetually high fiving out there asking for a raise and a percentage.

Some closer views of the landing gear.

There are some pretty amazing wood turning art out there. They'll even show you how they do it. it's oddly satisfying watching the wood peel away and the circular shapes change.

What amazes me is not these kids covering the mighty Van Halen. What amazes me is not these kids giving the mighty Van Halen cover a fair shake. What amazes me is not how surreal it seems this little girl singing lyrics from the perspective of a little kid from the perspective of a grown man referencing the perspective of a little kid. What amazes me is how this music has now become repertoire for a music school. Sure it's School of Rock, but teaching impressionable little minds music in the school system has for a million years been staunchly focused on classical, concert, and maybe a little jazz. Now, Van Halen songs are main stream standards outside of guitar shop lesson closets. Interesting how times have changed.

It makes me chuckle when the lead singer sings, "Oh, yes I'm hot." Which class does the School of Rock cover dissolving cocaine in your morning whiskey lesson?

It's interesting that during the American Civil War there were hand-cranked propeller driven submarines and armored steam-powered iron-clad low-profile ships with a gun turret.

The Great Holtzie is a comedian that plays to audiences 3-10 years old. I've seen him perform for a crowd of kids and he did really well. He was killing, actually. I was amazed at how not funny I thought he was, yet the kids were roaring with laughter. Then it hit me that his show had nothing to do with me (duh...); he was focusing on child psychology and what they thought was amusing. And he had it figured out, too. I don't have video of the performance, but I found this clip on YouTube.

See if you can figure out his angle and what little kid's focus on that they think is funny.

I always thought ships were launched bow first in to the water. This Littoral Combat Ship, USS Billings (LCS 15), was launched sideways.

More wasteful big government socialist defense spending instead of using your tax money on a proper modern healthcare system.

It certainly is mind-boggling, Sesh, especially how the US is in trillions of debt to pay for that spending. But, if it's okay, I was hoping to keep this thread light. Your post might be better suited for the Front Line where it can receive heavier discussion.

To me, it's definitely a testament of competence and the sheer size of the shipyard engineer's balls to successfully launch that way. I'm sure every angle was calculated a million times to ensure that launch smoothly as planned without a hitch. if it did sink, I imagine the hull could be raised and salvaged without it being a total $362 million dollar loss. But Marinette Marine would take a crippling hit in loss of business. And to rebuild their reputation to get even a row boat contract from the DOD, it will take an entire Madison Avenue marketing company and dedicated fluffer chicks marched into the Secretary of Defense's office 24/7 for several years. OR a very generous campaign donation to House Armed Services Chairman Adam Smith and Senate Armed Services Chair James Inhofe, and the problem goes away pretty quickly.

Yeah but the US Navy seems to hate the Littorals, I imaging they say the "littoral navy, isn't that the Coast Guard"? Mainly because it doesn't fit into their carrier and missile cruiser fleet. But hey, I saw the USS Little Rock chrisinted, she's a beaut...

That would be exciting watching a Navy ship christening. Did the USS Little Rock enter the water sideways, too?

I don't know about the Navy hating littoral ships. The Navy has taken delivery of 22 littoral ships so far, and the LCS is now the second-largest U.S. Navy surface ship in production.

The fact there have been so many ordered doesn't mean the navy wants them particularly since the system is about politicians ordering shit no one needs and in return the defence corporations provide tax funded jobs in their areas plus campaign contributions to the politicians.

It's like socialism except instead of looking after people when they are sick or educating them instead the tax payers money makes a few people rich and means that the US needs a constant stream of conflicts to justify the system.

I'm not saying this is a Trump thing BTW. https://www.military.com/daily-news/...esnt-want.html

That's amazing about Abrams tanks and the Army not wanting them. I wonder if that has to do with current wars the US is engaged in are more urban and close in warfare like in the middle east rather than open battlefields 70 or 80 years ago. Per the article, I also wonder how much of it was Rep. Mike Turner protecting his job, how much of it is the Secretary of Defense or DOD wanting to make sure the US still has the capability to manufacture tanks, and how much of it is organizations like NSA or DIA believe outsourcing tank production could transfer sensitive or classified information.

I did a little checking around and discovered the US Navy has been reducing their requirements for littoral combat ships in favor of more F-35's, Virginia-class submarines, Super Hornets, and guided missile frigates. They've even asked for more Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. That's amazing; thanks for bringing that to my attention.

What's also amazing is parental infanticide in birds. The parent somehow decides, "Welp, you're just not up to standards. You gotta go..."

Yeah, the litorals were for the War on Terra'...but they seem to be not capable of much of anything...

They'd been better off building better, more capable Coast Guard cutters...

Interesting. I was originally thinking Arkansas when I saw Little Rock. I found video of the christening.

i did some checking around and it's actually illegal to photograph or make videos of the Eiffel Tower at night without permission because the light show is still copyrighted. The Tower itself is public domain but the light show apparently still maintains a copyright since 1985. Of course, the devil is in the details, no one has been sued yet, so French courts have not ruled on something like this as of now. Can you imagine what it would cost to send cease and desist letters to millions of tourists? But I can't remember seeing a Hollywood movie that contains a scene of the Eiffel Tower light show to challenge the copyright. Copyright law amazes me. I also discovered 3M's patent on Post-It Notes ran out in 1997 but they also have a copyright on the shape/size/color/name of the notes which curtails competitors from making an exact duplicate of the sticky note. Unlike the Tower, 3M regularly enforces their copyright by suing infringers.

Here's an illegal video of the Eiffel Tower light show.

    Paris looks magical.

If it's surprising naval facts you are after how about the Canadian navy?

At the start of WWII in 1939 the Canadian navy had only 6 ships. By the end in 1945 it had one of the largest navies in the world with 95,000 personnel and 434 ships.

That's quite an impressive build-up of arms. Does that include submarines and aircraft carriers? We're the ships all built in Canada or did they outsource any of the construction?

I dunno, you seemed to know what year, how many ships they started with, how many personnel, how many ships they finished with. So, yes you are Google.

Here is something I found that is tremendously fascinating potential case law involving privacy. Now that many students are are beginning their Fall semesters in both college and secondary schools virtually, how far into a private residence can a jurisdiction claim domain and be allowed to regulate? Does the fact that a camera is on and a teacher can see into a student's house give the school the right to enforce all of it's regulations and rules on the private residence? And taking that a step further, can the school system claim the private residence is an extension of the teacher's classroom and demand inspecting the home for compliance to classroom rules and regulation? I found an article claiming a fifth-grader in Baltimore got a visit from the police after his teacher called to report that she had seen a BB gun on the wall behind the student during a class video call. According to the article, there is "...a lack of privacy during virtual classes after her son was targeted by a teacher who saw what she thought was a scary-looking gun hanging on the wall of the boy’s bedroom."

Teacher Spying on Student During Virtual Class Sends Cops to Search 11-Year-Old's Home After Spotting a BB Gun
    https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politic...bb-gun-n518679

This isn't from a new source like AP, Reuters, etc., and appears to be somewhat politically slanted. However, it does raise very interesting questions regarding privacy and the limit on government regulation. Also, does a person's home become subject to rules and regulations of a corporation because an employee is working from home and a camera is on? And if so, can an employee or student charge rent or receive compensation from the school system or corporation for use of the house as an extension of the workplace or classroom? That's Constitution level stuff right there folks. Potential Supreme Court case if someone brings this to trial?

    Some quotes from the article:

"The principal and the teacher cited a rule stating that students may not bring guns to school and claimed it extended to virtual classes as well"

According to the boy's mother, "[the] teacher took a screenshot of the boy’s bedroom, which is incredibly creepy and a violation of the family’s privacy. When the mother demanded to see the screenshot taken by the creeper-teacher, she was told she would not be allowed to view it because it wasn’t part of his official school record."

This is fascinating and amazing. An MH-53E front landing gear got stuck and a maintenance crew on the ground came out to pry it open while the helicopter hovered ...for 20 minutes. There's all sorts of way this could go really bad. Here is this pilot making this big helicopter hover 6-7 feet off the deck with people standing underneath it. Gotta do what ya gotta do, or get a rotor strike.

This is amazing, yet also exemplifies the Roth Army spirit at the same time. Reckless or standard operating procedure for a palm tree lumberjack? Just don't know. You decide for yourself.
