This is some super complicated politics for the Republicans, The USA consistently polls 2-1 against repealing Roe v. Wade so if they do force through another nutjob right wing weirdo onto the supreme court it could cause a backlash of losing big in the election. The counter is that may be worth it as presidents and senates come and go but you can have the court for decades.

It's interesting though because these people care about absolutely nothing at this point apart from their status so it's all a big gamble. With no ideology or moral framework left post Trump it becomes a complicated chess game.
Moscow Mitch himself doesn't know what to do which is why he was running around the last few days telling these great senators of the United States of America to say nothing until they work out what could work.
Lindsey Graham is still favourite to hold onto his seat.
How could anyone vote for that?

well..... at least the idiot wore a mask, for once.
The importance played up on Roe v. Wade in these appointments is baffling... you are right, most the nation opposes repealing it. As you saw with the last 2 appointments with Gorsuch and Kavanaugh cases related to abortion didn't magically rise to the SC to be worked. Same with the ACA. This time will be no different.
Filtering out the noise... I believe this appointment will get pushed through before the election for one simple reason. Eliminate the 4-4 numbers and put the potential for a deciding vote with 9 jurors on the bench. First challenge for the court before New Years... will be sorting out the mess this election will create.

Four out of five of the Republican appointed judges were by presidents who lost the popular vote. The senate is incredibly undemocratic. This all means your very politicised and more powerful than ever supreme court doesn't reflect the voters.
What you will have is the opinions of what a minority of people thought about society 30 years previously. You can see how people are getting pissed off. Also Trump is lying saying that your votes are corrupt and clearly hoping that the court will have the final say in any dispute as you say.
Looking from the outside this is looking like a possible attempted coup of your system, it wouldn't be the first time its been done like this in other countries.
As has been shown recently by Chief Justice Roberts... coming from a conservative background doesn't guarantee rulings that always align with conservative wishes from the court. Most of the justices are really intelligent people and their decisions flow better with the point of law rather than the whims of political bullshit.
To me, that's a saving grace of all this... these judges aren't just lemmings riding the popular political train of the day.
It helps to remember that a conservative judge tends to align their decisions with a fairly strict interpretation of the Constitution rather than the popular ideas of today which favor more progressive/liberal elements that do not align with the Constitution.
Opie Roberts is first and foremost a corporatist. Any case involving corporate profits, he's for it... whichever side benefits the corporations more. That's why Republicans were confused by his vote on "Obamacare" but he wasn't siding with the "liberals", he was siding with the insurance companies & big pharma.
In the cases where no corporate money is involved, Roberts isn't entirely a hardline conservative. Which is a good thing, because it shows he has more of a brain than Thomas or Alito. Or Rapey Brett.
On the other hand, one of RBG's last votes was actually in FAVOR of a gas pipeline being built under the Appalachian Trail, so even the best justices have some votes which lead to serious head scratching. (fortunately, that ill fated project fell apart a week or so after the court decision and the toxic pipeline isn't being built after all)
That killed a lot of jobs in the pipeline industry. My son is a master welder... If you celebrate killing that pipeline deal thinking it was somehow bad for the environment... wait until the 50-60 year old existing infrastructure that's falling apart fails and causes 200 times more environmental impact plus drives energy costs through the roof for the most populated portion of the US.
The eastern US isn't going to running on green energy anytime in the next 20-40 years... do you really want all that oil and natural gas hauled in there via trains and trucks... which also don't run on green energy. Think about it...
Democracy Now!
Now you know slave FORD is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel.
Oh well, 4 more years of ol F A T T Y thanks to him and his lazy liberal ilk. The only upshot I see is that ol' F A T T Y will have killed off more than 3/4 of America's obese, lazy, Catholic Qtard population by the time his second term ends.
Don't worry Slave Kristy. Under the theocracy of Holy Emperor Pence, enforced by Supreme Biblical Court Justice Amy Culty Batshit, you won't have to worry about such things as liberal journalists speaking the truth anymore. Those blasphemous heathen heretics will be sent to the camps for Godly re-education.
Under His Eye, Slave Kristy!!
Somewhat sad... given so many are led to believe renewable energy is widely available or in use... only 11% of the US energy consumption comes from "green" energy and at best 17% is generated from renewable sources. Many of those renewable sources are hydro-electric dams... not wind or solar.
I suspect Europe isn't that much better.
The reality is fossil fuels will be powering the planet for many more decades. Even under the most optimistic circumstances could the major population centers of the world even approach 50% of of generation or use of renewable energy in say 20-40 years..? I don't see it at the current adoption rates even in 50 years.
That's the big problem with a lot of Americans, you live in a bubble and never look at how other countries do things better than you do.
Scotland is 90% renewable electricity and increasing. The UK as a whole is over 30% and we need to do a lot better. Meanwhile you guys just shrug.
Like what? Defend yourselves? You tree tossing, kilt-wearing, shit whiskey puking, unbathed ginger pussies live in your own bubble of tourism and xenophobic ignorance. Yeah, when one thinks of all the great accomplishments the Scottish do in the world all you have to offer is stereotypes and garbled language.
I see. Must be nice to do that when AMERICA is paying for your defense. When China and/or Russia invade your rat-infested castle shithole what are you going to do? Throw some tartan on some solar panels and hope they go away? You Euro trash are a bubble of thanklessness and terminal stupidity. When ol' F A T T Y guts your military funding (which he will for everybody except of course, Israel) nobody will still understand your accents even when spoken in Mandarin.
Just remember to thank slave FORD and his band of self-entitled Bernie Brats for it.
Have a lovely day.
See? It's shittards like this pseudo-intellectual assholes who slave FORD worships is why we have ol' F A T T Y
Kristy makes a fair point, minus all the castle shithole / terminal stupidity stuff. Western Europe has for many years enjoyed a budget for non-military activities and projects because in part of their relying on protection from NATO/US. The UK military is formidable, and have The Bomb, but the reason why NATO-aligned countries do not get overrun by their enemies is because of threat of war with the United States.
I don't agree. If the US left NATO it would be a blow but the Russians and Chinese wouldn't be attacking any member any time soon. We've already had a trial run for the last 4 years with a Russian puppet in charge of the US. You think Trump would have gone to war with Russia to save Latvia?
Also as a side point on the funding of the US military compared to other countries you have to take a third off because spending includes all that healthcare and education stuff that doesn't come out of military budgets in other western countries who provide it to all their people military and not.
You do have to account for geographical size and population to compare these things...
Scotland is closest in size to South Carolina. 41st in size of the states in the US.
The top 10 metropolitan areas around major cities in the US have more people and infrastructure than the entire country of Scotland.
We don't just shrug... it takes a whole lot more to convert something of this size.

We have 100% renewable energy where I live.
